  • This is an update to the first video where I address the issue I was having with my Roland FD7 Hi Hat Controller. There isn't much to this pedal and so my issue was easy to find and fix.

Hey! great video. I am having issues with my pedal, found your video and turns out that my pedal doesn't have the metal rod sticking up or the metal part up top with the wing nut aside from whatever issue it has going on. does that affect anything or should I be on the lookout for those parts as well? But your vid has given me the confidence to get in there and see what is actually going on. thanks!

That rod with the wing nut and spring adds resistance to the pedal to help add the feel of a reel hi-hat stands spring resistance. You always have to use a little effort to push down a real hi-hat foot pedal. I think Roland's goal with that rod, spring and wingnut was to give you that effect. It also basically helps lift the pedal back up from the down position. I'm not sure as to why yours is missing. I would suspect it has broken off or a previous owner removed it as I don't recall a version being sold without it. I could be wrong though. To be quite honest though.... you could probably make your own spring system if you can't find original parts for your pedal. It's basically a bolt, a spring, a type of washer and a wing nut. It does help. I'm not sure how it would feel without that part under the pedal. I would assume the pedal would not be that responsive. In other words... the pedal would probably bottom out all the time. That may affect parts on the inside. You won't know until you take it apart.
