The Dangers of Hazing and Bullying | Kathleen Wiant | TEDxDayton

  • The practice of hazing, as a subset of bullying, is a subject few ever hear about unless it results in a death that makes it newsworthy. Kathleen knows this intimately, having lived the nightmare of being awoken to the news of her son’s death at college due to hazing. Through sharing her heartbreaking experience, Kathleen brings to light the hidden dynamics of hazing and its deceptively slow build. She shows how the twisting of consent and the use of shame work to keep hazing victims silent, and how it will take courage from authority figures, peers, and family members to help victims avoid the abusive consequences of hazing. Kathleen Wiant, mother of five children, had her world change forever in November 2018 when her 18-year-old son, Collin, died from fraternity hazing at Ohio University. This motivated her to learn about hazing and in the process, she discovered a critical remedy for it…courage. She now speaks at universities across the country to share her findings and lobbies for anti-hazing legislation on a national level. She is also progressing with Ohio’s anti-hazing & anti-bullying law, Collin’s Law. Kathleen has spent her career in professional training and leadership development. As a board member of The Collin Wiant Foundation, she is passionate about its mission to “bring more Kindness + Courage to the world.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Your strength amazes me... I lost my boy 15 mins after birth and it broke me. I've not even cared for him or got to know him and I went to the darkest place possible and yet you, you are standing in front of people speaking about it. Hat's off to you, strong woman!

I feel so sorry for this mother and so many others.
As someone who was hazed and eventually stood up to the hazing only to be thrown out of that school for not following traditions, falling in line and ultimately trying to protect others all I can say is that educational facilities need to do a lot better because they fall short far to often when it come to protecting the abused and vulnerable instead of the perpetrators.

This "victim-blaming" card is nothing but a leftist newspeak bulldung. If you can't stand up for yourself that means you are weak and you deserve it. The world isn't a magical place with fairies and ponies, you can try to "ban" bullies in your country and create a weak nation who isn't used to deal with bullies, but then a strong nation of bullies will come and conquer you.

It is so distressing that this sort of thing is still happening. Every few years we see such a tragedy, and it still happens. 120 years ago a West Point cadet died from complications from hazing rituals, and a young Douglas MacArthur testified before Congress. And it's still happening.
Regardless of how many times we saw "never again," there is tremendous pressure preventing anyone from saying "Stop! This is enough!" If anyone tries to stop the brutality, they are shut down, ridiculed, or it's all rationalized with "But we had to do it!" as if that excuses all brutality.
Student organizations are not going to patrol themselves. Look at what happened here, the first thing the Fraternity did was try to cover it up. Education is a big part, but outside surveillance and strict consequences are essential.

Otherwise for the sake of the planet - DON'T HAVE KIDS.
