Hi jim, You have been my savior, I have been battling with anxiety and depression for some time now, I had a breakdown 6 months ago and went and got my self a banjo and found you, you have put the biggest smile on my face I did all 10 lessons now I'm working through all your song thanks so much muched loved from Australia.
Hi from down under, l finally finished the 10 lessons and just starting on this one. Early stage of Dementia keeps me sane, thanks Jim for everything your a Star and the saviour of souls. God bless you, Ger
For anyone else who came here from Jim’s beginner videos and is having a hard time keeping up: I am slowly going through the video and just learning the rolls first (even writing them down because I am incredibly musically challenged) without pressing down on any frets. Then I’m gonna go back and add the fretting once I can remember the rolls right and in order. It’s less intimidating that way. Hopefully it’s not banjo taboo - helps me anyway 😁
My Dad used to sing this song to me while playing the duelcimer. I can't wait to learn this on the Banjo, the guitar version just don't give it justice. Thank you for all you do. Means more than you know.
Hi Jim loving your beginner banjo lessons I play a little piano by ear always loved the banjo I’m 60 now an husband surprised me with one for Xmas your so inspiring an patient from Ontario Canada
I started playing the banjo during the lockdown last march when I came across your videos .you said in lesson 1 ,now go get your banjo ,ill wait! I've followed your 10 lessons and a few of your other videos .Iam not a great banjo player by any means but I think I'm finally getting it thanks to your method of teaching. So thank you jim and all the best from Scotland
Hello from brown county, Indiana! I started my banjo journey this week after it collected dust for 6 years. Feeling pretty solid on cripple creek and learning this now! Thank you for the video!
I just wanted to say that I love this song and I'm really glad you posted up a lesson for it! Thank you! I finished up with your beginner series a few weeks ago, and all of that was excellent, but I had a bit of a harder time following along on this video. I really like the way you presented the beginner series by first walking through the tabs for a particular section, then playing that by itself slowly, then again once more faster. That made it very easy to follow along, learn the fingerings, and play along until I got the hang of it. This video keeps jumping around though, which makes it slightly more difficult to learn a section, add it to the song, and keep up. I really appreciate all the work you put into these and I'm extremely grateful for having these videos. Just for a beginner though, I think it would be really helpful to split up each section and play through it at a slower pace first, similar to the beginning lessons. Thanks again for making these great videos! I can't think of a better way to learn the banjo :)
I always hope that the first 10 lessons are just a starting point. To continually take each song apart like I did in those videos keeps everything as a beginner lesson and at some point you have to take the things you’ve learned and apply them without having a roadmap for each step of the way. That’s why I do this particular video like this. There’s really nothing here that’s not covered in the beginner series. Also, the struggle is important. You learn way more when you have to dig for it than if I were to give you each note. Keep picking. I know you can do this!
Jim, in just few short weeks I have learned more from you than the two paid subscriptions elsewhere that touted banjo lessons! Thanks for the help and instructions you give!
I skipped Boiling Cabbage Down. Cripple Creek is the one song I feel like all pickers should worry about the most. Banjo in the Holler just didn't hit my brain like other things.
Jim your awesome! You make learning the banjo really easy! Your very precise with your lessons thank you for taking the time to post. I don't think I would be playing the banjo if you were not around on RUclips cause all the other teachers don't teach like you do. And it's hard to keep up with them there not as precise as you are .THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Hi Jim! This was the first song I picked up after following your 10 beginner lessons, and I've enjoyed playing it a lot. Thank you so much for this video.
Super helpful, thanks ! Your beginner lessons were super great and it nice to see that we can use what you taught in these lessons to learn cool songs like this ! I hope you'll keep doing this :)
Just found your channel! I've had my banjo sitting around since last summer, but this schoolyear I'm gonna be using your channel to learn! Love your lessons and I hope you keep making them 😊😊
I tried to do this without tab I really did. I kept replaying and replaying but couldn't get it. I tried slowing it down, but [on my tablet/connection] it adds twenty reverberations for every note and dear Jim sounds like you've been up Walton's mountain and found Grandpa's still. So I bought the tab and I'm using it alongside the video and am breaking it down [like you have done with other tunes] and starting on the easier bits first. Suddenly it makes sense-ish. I was so pleased with myself for getting Man of Constant Sorrow to Mr Pankey speed too (plus or minus a few notes) that I was feeling a little demoralised. But no more! I'm back on track! Another thanks for your efforts Mr Pankey!
Thanks Jim, I look forward to making this my first song to learn when I get a banjo, my list of potential ones is narrowing down, you explain it so well. Regards, Bob M. South Wales
Thanks for another great lesson, Jim. You have at least one student with Attention Deficient Disorder! Stumbled on this one because I was in a hurry to learn it for grand kids. Along with the song, I learned- again- to slow down, take it in sections-just as you teach it- and not try to progress before I'm ready- otherwise it just ends up taking longer, as I want to make it more complicated and throw extra licks in there. Small bites of the sandwich makes it easier to eat!
Spent the last five or so days tinkering with this - such a sweet song that takes me back to happy happy times with my dear old dad. I like to think he's hangin' in heaven now smiling that I am learning to play it. Thanks, as always, for the inspired instruction. (Just discovered that feature to slow down the speed of videos - had it set to 75 percent and forgot, and the other day when I got on to watch it, thought, "wow, is Jim drunk or something? He's talking so slow in this one." Hah!)
Thanks Jim, you are a good teacher, Very simple and slow for beginners. Very important for Argentina, . Here we haven´t professors or teachers of banjo, Big hug , friend, José Luis.
I don't understand how people can dislike these videos. Jim is highly accessible, and takes time to help hopeless wannabe banjo players like me, have hope in their ability. What the heck is wrong with y'all negative Nelly's. If you dont like it, move along and dont shiz on our banjo rainbow.
Hi Jim! at 3:42 you follow the pinch with a slide but at 4:50 you follow the same pinch with 3rd string/second fret and into the C Chord. Could you clarify? Should I play this as demonstrated? Thanks so much for your lessons!
Either way works... So you can choose which way is easiest for you. The goal here is just to take some things you know and make it into a tune. So, often, you'll have to find things that work best for you.
He plays as taught in the first demo then in the second with the 3s2 2s0 4th notes I belive, so you kind of get two ways of playing with a slight difference. Nightmare for a beginner like me but so satisfying when I notice the difference just by learning by ear with no tabs.
Jim thank you for all the videos and your hard work. I've completed your beginner series and I have learned a lot. If I may request is there anyway you could revisit this song at just a tad slower pace. There is a lot of info piled into this five minutes. Your student and friend Kaleb
Hi Jim. These videos are so good, but I'm having a little trouble following now that I've graduated to the slightly more complicated songs. Is there someplace where you write out the tabs for these?
Hi Jim been watching your videos and went on to learn amazing Grace love it , do you by any chance have a tab for this couldn't find on on your website
I'm not really taking any new local students, and I'm really not equipped to do FaceTime or Skype lessons. As you continue to practice the material in the lesson series start to listen to my other lesson videos. Soon you will have gathered enough information to start figuring out other songs with the skills you've learned.
I loved the beginner banjo series. The few videos that I have watched since have been hard to understand what you are saying over the sound of the banjo.
Sorry about that. It’s not like this is something I had ever done before. Most importantly, you can hear the banjo. That’s really the thing you should be listening to.
Hey Jim, right after the pinch at 3:43 you say to do a slide 3, 2, 1, 5 then back to the 2, 5, 1, 5, 2, 5. When you play it out though you don't do a slide and instead do a 3 (2nd fret) and a 2 then right into the 25151525. I was was doing the slide with the 4 plucks and noticed it just didn't sound like yours. Could you clarify what comes after that pinch pretty please. Love the video, took me month to get this down, my daughter learned it on the fiddle in 2 days! But hey we have a song we can play and since together now. Woohoo.
Here's the thing... you can decide which you like. Both are right. It's up to you to decide on the pattern. I do it different about every time I play it. The goal is to play the "song" - not repeat back the exact notes I'm playing here.
@@JimPankey Thanks Jim, I'm slowly getting that the hard way. Starting out new it is nice just to find something to play along with and try to do it "right" by the lesson. I do get that eventually I'll be able to tweak it to whatever suits me or or just fun. So thanks for the clarification, I'm not trying to critique just trying to do it as close to your way so I have something to build off. Thanks for always responding! I've had request to start practicing Rainbow Connection now for a 9 yr old friend of ours so away I go to learn another tune with your tutelage.
@@riverhouseparadiseproject3298 From my perspective, if you can already hear the differences you pointed out, then you should be more than ready to decide which way you want to play it. You're gonna do just great!
Hi, Jim! Don’t know if you look at comments from videos this far back, but I was wondering if you could provide the tab for this? I feel like I could really tackle this, if I didn’t have to stop and replay so often. Also, hope you’re feeling well!
+Brad Dobmeier hey brad... See if this'll hold you over until I get something more "official". This was just something I threw together for a local student. ruclips.net/video/hwrEyU5t9ZY/видео.html
My biggest problem is knowing what roll to play at certain points in the song. I can usually find the melody but I have trouble figuring out which roll to use for the chord.
@@JimPankey Jim, I have sort of the same problem, I struggle to hear you tell us the strings to play over the sound of the banjo. I can't catch the string to hit even after listening to it 3-4 times. Sorry to complain I do appreciate what you are doing to teach banjo to us that have 5 thumbs on both hands.
john Vet part of the process is hearing the note as opposed to me telling you a string to hit. Just trying to figure it out is worth a hundred of me telling you. 😀. Playing music ultimately comes down to listening and attempting to recreate what your brain thinks you heard...
Started working on this one today and caught myself playing just by ear a couple of times. Not playing it the same as you but it sounded really good. I can't do it every time and I can't just replicate the same over and over. It just happens without thinking. Is that how it will be more and more as I learn? Is that how it works for you? If that's where im headed it would be pretty awesome! I've played guitar and ukulele but I've never come close to playing anything without finding the chords or tab to a song.
I don't know why I find this song so difficult but I do. I've gone though 1-10 lessons. I'm doing pretty well with Foggy Mountain Breakdown and even Worried Man's Blues but I just can't seem to get this song. I keep trying then leave out of frustration then eventually come back and it kicks my butt again. Grrr... (sorry, just venting. It certainly isn't you. You are the BEST!)
Hello Jim, Today I was asked to play in a blue Grass jam "WOW" A first for me. You know that I am just coming out of your 10 series class and am doing A OK. Cripple Creek and banjo in the hollow I have down but am still working on Boil them cabbage down and working on "You on my Sunshine" I really want to go and see if I can do what you have been teaching, any help could boost my ego a bit. "WILL NEED IT" if you think it's too soon? I can keep working on getting the other two songs down and sit this one out until I get better with the pick. JAM starts on Friday this week I have to give an answer by Wendsday this still gives me time to get Boil them cabbage down and put more work in to that song, Whatever you tell me I will follow your advise. All the best Hope you had a great Thanksgiving
@@JimPankey Hi Jim, read your message "WILL DO" Will let you know if my ears can or at least try to follow along and try to hear the chord changes. I understand your Idea here A GOOD IDEA Will try to get a video for you if I can. One more thing before I let you go. I set aside 1 hour every day for practice, for me this is long enough I, like what you said about being a beginner for as long as it takes, for this is a good statement. every song that I will learn will be new and fun for me. Take care until next time.😀
Jim, is this tune available for purchase in any of your TAB books? My sketchy satellite internet will play the audio, but not the video. It's hard to learn from a video, without the video! It's strange---all 10 of your Beginner lessons loaded just fine (loved them!) but now, some of the videos won't load at all. I REALLY want to learn this song! Now that I know how the Sellfy site works, I'll know where to look for my purchases. :-) Thank you.
I don't have it tabbed. There's so much to be gained by struggling along and trying to apply what you've learned. If I stick it in a tab you'd miss out.
I so appreciate this tutorial but it’s A little fast for a rookie like me, it’s a bit hard to follow. I’m having a hard time understanding what strings and frets you want us to play, figuring it out a lot by ear.
Have you been thru my beginner series? And yes, it’s hard at first to figure out things by ear, but it’s worth it. That’s the real intent of this tutorial.
Hi Jim, if I may be so bold, I just did your 10 lesson series and am now able to play all that you thought in the series WOW I am having so much fun after all the years, my banjo has been hiding behind the couch collecting dust. Now I am tackling your "You are my Sunshine " this is a bit of a worker! For all of those reading this message to Jim, please Take note, That this song should be your next one before moving on to "The Ballard of Jed Clampett " When doing "you are my sunshine " take your time and work it slow , because with this pattern it is a bit tricky I have part of it down but it is the 25 hammer on 1 5125 25 hammer on 1 1 open 525 is where I am having to take it slow and also the 123 pull off which I need to go back to Jim,s other video to look at his 123 pull off again , a weak spot for me, Jim has a way of teaching, that makes it fun to learn and play the banjo , and I will continue to keep learning from Jim's video TO YOU JIM , I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY, THANKS FOR BEING THERE, AND I HOPE YOU 'R HEALTH STAYS WELL . I AM HAVING MAJOR HEALTH ISSUES MYSELF AND THE BANJO HELPS ME TAKE MY MIND OFF THINGS . I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THE BANJO , AND YOU JIM, HAVE HELP ME FIND THAT LOVE OF PLAYING . REMEMBER FOLKS , TAKE IT SLOW WITH THIS SONG ... ALL BEST TO ALL , AND JIM, I WILL GET THIS SONG, AND HAVING FUN WITH IT . ALSO BEEN WORKING ON A SHAVE AND A HAIRCUT TWO BITS , AND I AM OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER WHAT TWO BITS WERE . TAKE CARE JIM , AND ALL THE BEST. MY FRIENDS & FAMILY CALL ME BIG CD FOR I AM 7 foot 2 AND MY BROTHER YOUNGER IS 6 foot 6 TAKE CARE JIM.
RUclips has functionality to allow you to slow the video down to 25% of the original speed. Not sure what you meant by the other part of your comment... Sorry.
It's not. I feel like it's simple enough that you shouldn't need a tab at this level. If you've gone through lessons 1-10 you should have all the tools necessary to play it.
Not to say I haven't really enjoyed your videos and found them educational (I have). However in this one you rip right through some pretty complicated licks in contrast to you usual stepwise style. I was finding it hard to follow and getting frustrated. I skipped ahead to your foggy mountain breakdown and was relieved to see that you were doing your old stepwise style. Guess I am not to the point yet where I can handle a shorter explantion (recently finished basic 10). Think I will come back to this one after foggy mountain
Hang in there, and don't forget you can use the slowdown feature to catch the quicker stuff. In a lot of ways I did intend this particular video to set a tone for the future. I know that the struggle now will make things easier later on - especially when you start learning from recordings.
Thanks for the reply. I suspected that it might be a little of the throwing them in so they learn to swim approach. I will hang in there, thanks for all your efforts

I don’t plan to provide a tab for this one. If you’ve been thru my ten lesson series you should be able to figure this one out.
Stopping and replaying is such a huge benefit to actually learning to play.
Changed my mind. Tab is here: wildjimbo.sellfy.store/p/you-are-my-sunshine/
Very enjoyable
Glad you enjoyed it
I haven’t seen a tutorial of Cotton Fields yet out here. You think maybe you…?
I dunno… I’ve never played it before on banjo, and it’s not one I’ve had come up at any bluegrass jams I’ve ever attended.
Maturnuwun Mbah Jim!
Aku seneng nglakoni
Yeah I bought the tab so I can look at it and follow the video
You can do it!
You have great videos but could you do one for foggy mountain breakdown
+Brad Dobmeier hey brad... See if this'll hold you over until I get something more "official". This was just something I threw together for a local student. ruclips.net/video/hwrEyU5t9ZY/видео.html
My biggest problem is knowing what roll to play at certain points in the song. I can usually find the melody but I have trouble figuring out which roll to use for the chord.
That's where you can experiment and figure out which roll works best for you. There's no "right" answer. It's just a matter of discovery. :)
That’s exactly how it’s gonna work!
This one will take some effort, and the struggle is really working for your benefit. Don’t worry too much about it. You can do it.
How do you know what rolls to use in a song? Is it just memorizing the rolls so you know when you see them?
Good question. Not really sure I’ve got an answer. It’s just a matter of choosing the rolls to fit the song.
Go to the jam. Sit a bit away from the circle and play quietly and see what you can figure out. You’ll do fine, but it’ll be a struggle at first.
Take care until next time.😀
Thank you so much!!!
Ok I have a question, when I slide on the 4th string it makes a loud sliding noise, is it suppose to do that?
It can make noise… but more practice and you’ll sort out how to make it quieter.
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. Once I am able to see it (so that I can learn it), I will definitely do that.
this maybe a dumb question lol but how do u get over being nervous playing in front of people lol
You just have to play more for people... start small.
I think I can do this!
You can do it!
I have tried beginner series on RUclips but not the ones from your channel. I’ll have to check them out!
do you have the tab for this
I don't have a tab for this one. It's important from time to time to stretch out and try to figure things out this way.
Changed my mind. Tab is here: wildjimbo.sellfy.store/p/you-are-my-sunshine/
thank you
Hi Jim, if I may be so bold, I just did your 10 lesson series and am now able to play all that you thought in the series WOW I am having so much fun after all the years, my banjo has been hiding behind the couch collecting dust.
Thanks for letting me be a part of your banjo journey 😀
hi, do you have a tab for this? i'm struggling to pick it up and it has real sentiment to me
I do not.
Tab is here: wildjimbo.sellfy.store/p/you-are-my-sunshine/
Jim, do you know the song fox on the run.
I do
This is a purty song, but I like to sing “Low and Lonely” to Miss Bee….
Thanks 😊
Got it!!!
awesome!
Anyone having issues with this video loading???
Working here.... not sure what’s up.
Id love if u slowed it down and spike to keys in numbers. I can't read the letters I learned by watching u in a 3 2 1 roll
RUclips has functionality to allow you to slow the video down to 25% of the original speed. Not sure what you meant by the other part of your comment... Sorry.
@@JimPankey I'm just trying to follow along in a number pattern thank you for your teachings I'm greatful
👍
😃
Jim is this found in any of your tab/books
It's not. I feel like it's simple enough that you shouldn't need a tab at this level. If you've gone through lessons 1-10 you should have all the tools necessary to play it.
Jim Pankey that’s true just need to keep rewinding I guess it’s just easier seeing it on paper that’s all
There's just so much you'll gain by figuring it out "the hard way". I know yo can do it. Someday you'll thank me, :)
Jim Pankey I already do learned more here than from Geoff H and Wayne E Your far more entertaining
We can do it. Got 994 lets get 1000 likes
Thanks John! 😅
Too fast for a total beginner Jim.
You do realize that you can pause… slow down the video and rewind??
