Abstrakted it's easier if you play a stringed instrument like a guitar then go to banjo the learning is quicker but progress is slow if you don't play another instrument because of speed syncopation and timing

Getting a banjo real soon, just have to buy new strings, get it tuned up and cleaned up. When I get it fixed up and ready to play, I'm definitely learning this song first. I've already mastered it on my mandolin. I love this song!
Well actually I put in Russell plays house of the rising sun on banjo and your site popped up on the side. I've been looking for some one to show how to play this song and you do a great job! Thank you! This is my favorite!
It was actually from the 1930s by a man who later became the governor of Louisiana, (hence this being the state song). It became prominent because it was popular enough that school teachers in Tornado Alley in the Midwest could lead children in rounds of it during tornado lockdowns
I am 73 probably mentally challenged when it comes to learning the Banjo . Yes, I probably would be your worst student but how I would love to be able to play a tune on that wonderful instrument.
One small correction on your sheet music you are playing the "and" of 2 on measure 4 with your index finger, not your thumb since your thumb just played the 4-5 slide.

It’s very confusing using 1, 2 on the tab representing the fingers because you also have these numbers on the tab for frets. It’s much clearer having I for index and M for middle.
Metal gives the most desirable tone for the fingers and plastic has traditionally been more fitting and comfortable for a thumbpick. Now I use a metal band thumbpick: store.banjobenclark.com/products/bluechip-jd-crowe-thumb-pick
Unfortunately, after watching this video, I have realized that I do not have the potential or skill necessary to be able to perform a simple roll, so I have returned my banjo.

She also stops at breaks and go's over everything so far so that you can hear what it's supposed to sound like and points out known trouble areas to focus on. I've learned a lot from my gold membership but I can't seem to learn tunes, Mr. Clark, you move to fast for this newb lol. The tab is helpful but the more I work on murphy method dvds the more and more I hate tab. 😑

Try, and dont give up, and you can learn anything - my brother had no sense of tone or rhythm and now has 5 guitars that he play regularly

I would get confused because it looks like a lowercase L.
