This is one of those powerful but unrecognised songs that had a profound effect on many of my generation. I grew up in a shitty, bland, English town, I was 17, bored, and working a dirty stinking factory job. I could see a whole crappy, shitty, boring life stretching out in front of me. But this song inspired me to walk away. I joined the British merchant navy, travelled the world, had many exciting adventures, met many wonderful people, spent time in the States, Canada and Africa, and finished up in Sydney. Thanks boys. I owe you.
Que buena historia de vida!!! Es increible poder acceder a una pequeña historia de alguien de otra cultura que ni siquiera conozco pero me hace sentir tan cercano. Saludos desde Argentina!!!
Wish i'd listened to the message it was giving. I just enjoyed the dancing and atmosphere. Great that you had the insight and concentration to absorb the message. Wish i had.
Just played this song after hearing the passing of steve wright radio dj everyone who listened to him new this was one of his favourite songs RIP steve
It all sounds pretty amazing to me. First time hearing. I knew the Business version. Never heard this, didnt know this is the original version. Amazing in 2020

This was my anthem in 1977 here in the UK. I'd been working for 2 years and getting crap wages and was sick of my home town. This rang true with me. However, I didn't leave my hometown, but I did change to jobs that I wanted to do. Now it's come full circle and at almost 65, I'm sick to death of my hometown, and the UK in general. I can't bear it here any longer. But I'm penniless, and am disabled. I live in a crappy council tiny flat and am sick to death of our leaders shi**ing on us from a great height.
Uplifting and sad at the same time. I remember listening to this as a kid and being full of hope. Now I'm 55 both parents gone to their graves, I hate my job. I'm constantly looking backwards instead of forwards. Feeling sad
Loved this track as soon as I heard it all them years back.Have lived my life to the lyrics.I am now 60 and these lyrics are as fresh in my mind as when I first heard them.Brilliant.
Amazing song. Anyone else get Born to Run vibes from this? In sound signature as well as the overarching sense of triumph and overcoming all obstacles...a song that feels as real as the lifeblood running through your veins
"Tired of doing day jobs, with no thanks for what I do....."How many MILLIONS of us can relate to that ?!!!Just get spoken to when you make a [human error] 1 in a 1000 mistake ?
Seems to be common in every part of the world, you make 1 mistake and you get hauled over the coals or you can show up to work early and put in an extra 20-30mins and not get acknowledged for it but if you show up 1 min late you get crucified.
This song made me realise getting out of a bad and fucking long relationship was the right thing to do - a few years on and everything is great. You've got one life so don't let yourself get trapped in an unhappy situation, make a change, even if it seems frightening. 'You'll get so lonely, maybe it's better that way It ain't you only, you got something to say Do anything you wanna do Do anything you wanna do'
Gonna break out of the city Leave the people here behind Searching for adventure It's the type of life to find Tired of doing day jobs With no thanks for what I do I'm sure I must be someone Now I'm gonna find out who Why don't you ask them what they expect from you? Why don't you tell them what you are gonna do? You'll get so lonely, maybe it's better that way It ain't you only, you got something to say Do anything you wanna do Do anything you wanna do Don't need no politicians to tell me things I shouldn't be Neither no opticians to tell me what I oughta see No one tells you nothing even when you know they know But they tell you what you should do They don't like to see you grow Why don't you ask them what they expect from you? Love this song! Saw them live back in March 1978, when I was just 20! Now I am 64, with 2 children older than I was then. My son is a professional musician. Still love this song and still go to live gigs! 😆
I was also 20 in 78.. I had a fake ID and caught the Rods in Campbell CA. KSAN radio in SF was giving this song heavy play. Loved it first time. My 21 year old loves this song. Young people have horrible music to listen to and radio is dreadful. This is a perfect radio song🎸

Barrie was a Friend from childhood I am so sad that he is gone. I remember him in his early days singing his heart out. RIP Baz.
Does anybody else notice what incredible bass playing is going on in this song?
Totally, it is the bassist really carrying the tune but also adding loads of little fills in any chance he gets! And some tight drums too
Yes, that has always occurred to me too!
That's Paul for you...
great bass player i hear em

RIP Barrie. What a song this is. Play it loud today and always. You made a slice of pure brilliance with this.
I'm not ashamed to say I've shed a few tears to this. It's so damn nostalgic and bittersweet.
“I know I must be someone, now I’m gonna find out who” such a good line, resonated with everyone who’s heard this I reckon
One of the greatest records ever from an old punk 1976 to 1978

How correct its just a number keep the faith
Used to listen to this as a teenager and it gave me hope. It was saying "do what you love in life, fuck the norms"
I m 59 and I hear this since my teenage years in Portugal. They were telling me to be free and do what I wanted to do!
This was and always will be my favourite song ever. Seen the Rods many times. The energy of the early band was something to behold.
