I got one from Dan at the last tool fair. I remember watching his first video about it and when he said you had to measure the length of each rafter, I must admit I was a bit skeptical.
I would always cut a pattern and the thought of measuring each one seemed a backward step.
Anyway when I met Dan he countered that argument with the fact that physically it's just far easier to measure a rafter than to keep lifting a pattern on and off, particularly when you're working alone and as is so often the case, rafters are 6 , 7 , or even 8 x 2. They're just to damn heavy now. Gone are the days when it was all 4 x 2.
Well i've just finished a BIG cut roof with long and heavy 6 x 2 rafters, joined over an ashlar wall so birdsmouths everywhere, and Dan's square was great.
Very easy to set and reset, no big pattern rafters to lug about, great for doing the hips like Del has just shown.
The only very slight issue is that it only really works on one side of the rafter, but thats fairly easy to work around.
I also found it useful for setting the backing line from an existing rafter or one that you have already fixed, just sit it on the rafter and adjust it accordingly.
All in all a great tool.

He knows his roofing Dan Cox. And now with the help of Roger he is getting a lot of air time to hopefully sell more of his product. Now that he is getting more comfortable in front of the camera. Not something I would even contemplate being filmed. Don't even like having my photo taken really. The main reason though is I know too much about too many trades. But not enough about one to show anyone else how to do it. Jack of all Master of none as they say. There is another good easy roofing square out there developed by a young Aussie apprentice called the Roofus. I have one of those. It works as a normal everyday sliding square but gives you roof cuts as well. Quite brilliant. All these modern gadgets and apps to make the job easier. The only assistance I had years ago was the little blue book. The roof pitchers guide. Still have my copy well used.
