  • Welcome to my backpacking gear review series for all of the backpacking gear I used in 2023. My hope for this series is to give a comprehensive, in-depth look at my favorite pieces of backpacking gear. In this video specifically, I’ll be going over my backpack (and pack liner), sleep system (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, ground sheet), trekking poles, and fanny pack. I bring these items with me on every single trip that I take so I’m dubbing them the backpacking basics.
    My full gear list (and review of each item) can be found on my website: www.eliseott.c...
    As I mentioned in the video, some of these items were gifted to me in exchange for other work, but a positive review was not a condition of those agreements and I fully stand behind all of these pieces of gear. Some of these links are also affiliate links, which means if you use them to purchase I get a small commission at no cost to you! Thanks so much for your support.

    Thanks for the kind words and using the X-Mid Pro 1! It's my favorite model in our line up :) Yeah it can be a learning curve to get started. Our old pitching video also wasn't very good. The new pitching video I put out a month or two ago is a lot more helpful.

      I love it!! and that reminds me, I'll add the pitching video to this description. It's the best once you get that part figured out.

    Great gear choices. I also went from a 2016 Duplex to a Durston Pro (2 person) and enjoyed using it for ridgerunning in the Smokies. My trekking poles are Black Diamond Alpine Zs because I like the way they break down so small. You mentioned the trekking pole tips. I got tired of hearing them scratch on the rocks so I finally tried rubber tips. I loved the change. A ranger suggested I superglue the rubber tips on and that worked like a charm. Over 1,000 Smoky Mountain miles and still going strong.

      thank you! I'm excited about the changes. I could see the Zs being nice too. Gluing them is smart, I've def seen a few rogue rubber trekking pole tips so i'm sure that would help. Sounds like Black Diamond just makes durable poles all around.

    Always love your gear list videos. I'm still using the shower sandals from your PCT list!
    The Durston groundsheet makes it super easy to figure out where your actual sleep space is gonna be. Just put it whereever you want to sleep and then pitch the tent on top. It's about the same weight as Tyvek, if not even a bit lighter.

    Like you I also use a x-mid pro 1 & carry a 3mm foam pad - I put it UNDER the tent though overnight so that I don't need a ground sheet! 👍🙂

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  9 месяцев назад

      oooh interesting! I like that idea a lot. I have been leaning toward getting rid of one or the other because I do feel they're a bit redundant, the foam pad is def more comfy for mid day naps though. I think Durston also says the tent floor technically doesn't need a ground sheet, but you can obvioulsy add it for extra protection.

    • @Greghikes1
      @Greghikes1 9 месяцев назад

      @@eliseott yep I figure because I am carrying it anyway I might as well put it to use under the tent! 🙂
      Also if you can find an industrial supplier you can get the foam for about a quarter of the price gossamer gear sell it for.
      I usually get about 100 nights use out of one before it's too damaged. (Annoyingly of course now Dan has a DCF floor version! 😂 So I would be less worried about using under that, I didn't use one under my zpacks tent all PCT last year & the floor is still great) anyway,
      Happy hiking! 😊

    I put the gossamer gear 1/8 pad under the X-mid pro 1, so it doubles as a ground-sheet to protect my tent floor. And it keeps any dirt on the pad outside.

      I also do the same. It also really helps reduce the mat from slipping on the tent groundsheet.

    Great videos!! Was wondering if you would use the X MID PRO in a thru hike, or would you continue with a duplex. I myself am planning a thru hike of the P.C.T. Was considering the X MID myself, what do you recommend, Duplex or X MID ? Thanks. Continue with you video's so helpful!!

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  9 месяцев назад +1

      thanks so much!! So overall they are similar in weight, price and material. I think the XMID outshines the Duplex in some of the thoughtful features like the ones I mentioned in the video (vents, inner pockets, magnetic holds for the doors, etc.) I would just recommend a couple practice pitches along with their pitching video. I think you'd be happy with both, but the XMID has the advantage in my opinion!

    Great video's !!! Very professional and detailed. Was wondering I'm in the market for a tent that you have used both . I'm leaning toward x-mid pro 2 . Seeing how you have used both which one would you recommend for P.C.T. thru hike . Keep up the great work thanks.

    Isn't the Durston X Mid Pro almost identical to the Sierra Designs High Route 1P? Same architecture, offset trekking poles with the alternate small vestibules and nesting system.

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  6 месяцев назад

      I'm not super familiar with Sierra Designs, but I can't find that tent on their site, so I'm not sure. All the ones I see aren't trekking pole tents, and are about a pound heavier. This X-Mid isn't nesting, it's all attached.

    Nice rundown of your gear. The Thrupack with the Comfy strap looks like a really good solution. I use a Fanny pack for the same reasons you stated but have found the fixed strap and buckle can be in the wrong place relative to your pack hipbelt. I’ll have to take a closer look at their products. Does your SWD backpack have the sewn on hipbelt or the one that attaches with the clips. If the latter, how has it worked for you?

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  9 месяцев назад

      thanks! Yeah I love it! With how it's designed you can move the buckle around so it's not sitting on your back (and getting pushed in by your pack). My SWD Is a sewn on hip belt, so I can't speak to a clip attachment for that one.

    do you share a tent with your fiance? I'm trying to decide what our plan is for shelter on the pct for me and my boyfriend

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes and no. We shared my duplex on the CDT most nights (one of us would carry that one) and then one of us would carry his single tent, that way if we got separated or were hiking at different paces, we had an option. There were a few times where he wanted to hike fast and get into town and I was just chilling and didn’t want to hold him back. We also got separated in a rain storm once, so it was nice to have the option for us. I’ve seen other couples share a tent and they just stick closer together. I will say a two person tent was tight for a whole thru-hike. We did it, but have considered a three person for future trips!

    • @DS-pj3hu
      @DS-pj3hu 8 месяцев назад

      @@eliseott Our tentative plan is a 2-person tent and then 1 person carries a tarp. I definitely wouldn't want to be stuck without a shelter when my boyfriend hikes so much faster than me! 3 person tent sounds much nicer though

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  8 месяцев назад

      @@DS-pj3hu I think that's a great plan! I was very happy to have the other tent with us cus he's also much faster than me haha. And yeah the 3 person tent would be luxury but not totally necessary!
