- SpongeBob SquarePants is a name everyone knows. Before this was the title of the Nickelodeon show, there was something else: SpongeBoy Ahoy! Lost media surrounding the SpongeBoy Ahoy Pilot episode has been uncovered, giving us a deep look into Stephen Hillenburg's early creation.
The Pilot for SpongeBoy Ahoy plays out almost identically to the actual first episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, Help Wanted. However, these storyboards have been lost media since the beginning of the show, which makes them especially interesting to see 25 years later.

Any footage used is from various TV shows, movies, and games to illustrate my personal thoughts on these pieces of media. All stock photos and images are either created by me or are sourced from publicly viewable image websites. Ever since I was a wee little lad, I had always loved the SpongeBob franchise. From the classics to the modern seasons, this cartoon sponge has always been a big part of my life. Seeing the entirety of the proof of concept storyboards not only found but *completely available to the public* is just an incredible sight to see as a SpongeBob fan since birth.

With the "wee little lad" part, I just read the entire rest of this in Mr. Krabs's voice, and that just made this all the better to read. Seriously, though, an amazing day for the SpongeBoy fandom indeed

I just love how Help Wanted was basically in it's final form years before the pilot would be made. Really cements how this episode is just quintessential Spongebob distilled into its purest form.
Also that promo Title Card just sends me with the action heavy music, gives the show a completely different vibe than the final theme song. I'm glad they chose to use it for the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Episodes instead.

This particular track was later used for the "Hall Monitor" title card and credits.

First this month was the 1996 Shrek footage and now another piece of SpongeBob history
June was uncovered much bigger piece of lost media, the banned Sesame Street episode 847 *The Wicked Witch of the West* was finally found, many people incentived by the long lost episode found.
This year definitely the year of lost media.
"Help Wanted" was actually completed in 1997, and they just changed the still of SpongeBob's nametag. The episode being finished in 1997 explains why some designs are slightly different, such as Mr. Krabs' eyelids being light red. It was simply repurposed as the pilot of the show with the classic title sequence in 1999. The original opening that's online is from a 1997 preview of the show.
Fun fact: His name was changed to prevent copyright issues since a cleaning product at the time shared the same name as Spongeboy.
And I have been trying to look for that cleaning product

You know, everytime something in a character's history is uncovered, it's like digging up a fossil of a dinosaur, a possible missing link, or maybe even a species that lived on Earth many years ago. In a good way, that is.

Spongebob is one of the greatest cartoon shows to have ever exist despite it's downfalls as time went on. As of today, there are four different eras of the show along with two spinoff shows and three movies. What do i mean by four different eras you may ask? Well season 1-3 are the golden era, season 4 & 5 are the midden era, season 6-8 are the bad era (for the most part), and season 9-onwards are the modern era.
There are 6 eras imo.
Seasons 1-3, golden era.
Season 4, mixed era.
Season 5, bad era.
Seasons 6-9A, dark era.
Seasons 9B-12, post-sequel era.
Season 13, modern era/post-threequel era.

@@matthewpastrikos7383 I think season 13 is a different era, a lot of episodes are completely different to rest of the show, they aren't worse, but they wouldn't fit in the post-sequel era. There are some episodes from the post-threequel era that could be from the post-sequel era (Pat the Dog, Patrick the Mailman...)
@@Pablo.673 Now that you mention, one of the episodes in season 13 took place in a different universe where Spongebob and everyone else are robots. So if you compare Season 13 to Season 1, you will definitely see the difference in where it all started and what has become. the newer seasons felt like a completely different show.

R.I.P. Mr. Hillenburg, you will never be forgotten as a legend. I didn’t know there was lost artwork called SpongeBoy Ahoy myself. I didn’t know the French guy was Jacques Gusteau perhaps.
I really like more hand drawn style cartoons because it feels more real and relatable. Like you could actually draw it if you tried.
Well now I'm crying tears of joy. I totally need that *"Spongeboy Ahoy!"* storyboard on a t-shirt.
Help Wanted was actually fully completed by late 1997 as seen on a Nick promo VHS. (It also may have aired once, though that's disputed). The only difference is the intro, the 1997 version has an intro that occurs between Patrick's line and getting to the Krusty krab, while the KCA airing in 1999 has the modern intro as by that point they had the first half of S1 completed.
The SpongeBob Ahoy change occured midway through Pilot work, before the final animation stage. They sound so close the mouths wouldn't need major changes and I think voice work happened near the end. They changed what the close up shot of the badge said.
The last SpongeBob Ahoy era version is probably storyboards, has some demo voices and fill ins mixed with real stuff, maybe some half finished animation. There was no full pilot ever made, Help Wanted was the pilot and the change happened before it was done. You can blame Cool Art using the newspaper comic SpongeBoy on a run of pencil for that.
there are some good new Spongebob seasons but seasons 1-4 are still my favorite
I just realized that TF2’s semifinal stage of development and Sponge Bob’s pilot both happened at about the same time.
Not to mention that that is apparently Spamton’s favorite year, implying he’s a fan of both.

ya its interesting to point out that this pilot was made in 1997, it just didn't air on live tv till 1999. (also when it did air I believe it used the normal intro)

SpongeBoy Ahoy should be made as a show! Here’s an escalator pitch, it should be about spongeboy setting sail on the 7 seas while going on crazy adventures with the whole Krusty crew and also Patrick and Gary should tag along because why not.

The reason they changed Spongebob’s name from “Spongeboy” is because that name was already in use and protected by copyright laws

Usually a lot changes with the pilot, so the fact that the finished animation did its best to execute the creativity and passion within the storyboards, even down to the smaller details, really shows that people believed it was worth putting in the extra work.

i wasnt one of the ogs that grew up when spongebob came out, the person who has seen some actual lost footage on tv, no, none of that, but i dont care. i grew up on spongebob, i loved watching it so much. i have clear memories of enjoying it and still today its my favourite cartoon! hes so adorable and i have even grew up to be a squidbob shipper and i dont give a damn about the haters, spongebob is amazing and whenever i see him or a reference i always smile. i love Spongebob SquarePants!

First 3 seasons are the only REAL Spongebob. Some moments in Seasons 4 thru 6, but the whole tone of the show shifted after season 3. All of the voice actors when asked their favorite episodes or moments are from this OG Era of Spongebob.
As much as I like SpongeBob SquarePants, Spongeboy Ahoy has such a good ring to it.

Yep, SpongeBob SquarePants was the only animated trilogy series that debuted back on July 17, 1999 which started off Season 1 on the Nickelodeon Channel and this animated show is still the same ever since 1999. Tom Kenny’s first appearanced voice role of SpongeBob SquarePants. (1999 was the true end of the 1990s) By the way, I remember watching SpongeBob SquarePants Trilogy back in the 2010s on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons channels. I actually do not exist in the 1990s, I exist in 2008, 2009, and the 2010s memories 👍
