  • Hopefully you never need to splice the winch rope on your 4wd winch while your bogged on a muddy hill. But in case you ever need to, here is how!
    One of the biggest advantages of rope instead of winch cable, is that you can actually repair it out on the trail.

    • @tareskisloki8579
      @tareskisloki8579 5 лет назад

      Plus steel cable weighs so much more (huge difference when running it up a hill), and you need to wear heavy gloves when handling it to avoid slicing your hand open on any loose strands, the only problem with rope is you have to avoid rubbing it against rocks (but you can buy sliding sheaths that just stay on the rope, roll up on the drum and be be placed where needed).

    When terminating the rope. I always thought it’s better to pull it all the way through once before burying it inside. This way there is an additional change of direction to prevent the rope from slipping out. Infact I’m pretty sure with ski rope you’re supposed to weave it several times before burying it

    A double Fisherman's knot works really well to join the rope together.
    especially if your winch rope is old and worn as it can be hard to splice.
    Although this would be a better permanent fix as knots can have trouble going through a winch Farleigh.

    • @SeekAdventure
      @SeekAdventure  5 лет назад

      The double fisherman's knot is an awesome knot for joining rope 👌👌.
      The only trouble with tying a knot is that you don't have the full rope strength. While splicing gives you 100% of the rope strength 👍. At the end of the day a knot will get you out of the situation though 🙂

    Assuming most offroaders don't carry a wire to fish through the rope, I'd be inclined to tie a rethreaded figure 8 to join the sections. Just going back to my climbing days. Maybe some sort of video on a true trail fix rather than a more sophisticated fix like this that is more likely done at home? Dyneema has different knot tying characteristics, some knots might not pass through a fairlead, knots lower breaking strength substantially in many cases, etc.
