  • In this video I show you an overview of the process it takes to convert your E46 M3 from SMG to a 6 speed manual. I didn't try to make this video to show you every single minute detail but I hope it serves as more of a guide to refer to. If you have any questions regarding the swap, please feel free to drop a comment below and I'll try my best to answer it for you. Below are some links I think you'll find helpful because they definitely made this job possible for me.

LITTLE UPDATE: My friend Jeppe had been tracking down why his cruise control hasn’t been working and it’s because at around 28 minutes into the video I explain how you need to wire into pin 20 on the connector that is the second one from the left but it is in fact the connector that is the second one from the right. Although messing this up won’t compromise the driveability of the car, it will make it so your CC doesn’t work. So if cruise control is important to you, be sure to fix this mistake I made in the video! Thank you and thanks to Jeppe for figuring it out!

Good job on the video, decent coverage of the steps.
Regarding the trany, since you had it all out, did you replace any of the compression springs? Did you install the locking pin and thrust pin? also noticed no ID switch, any issues with that? Im just trying to get all the parts I need in my basket as we speak... will be doing all the seals (inner and outer) as well since its out.

    • @jinendow

I did not replace any of the springs unless that is covered under Lang's Bellhousing machine service. And the ID switch isn't really necessary if you get the proper coding done afterwards. Good luck!

Best thing you can do to ANY car IMO. Doesn't matter if it's an E46 or a freakin econo box like a Neon. Three pedals or nothing is my motto. Makes it so much more fun to drive, and obviously you have a lot more control over the vehicle. The SMG sucks ass compared to the later DCT trans' anyways so regardless it's the better move. The DCT is WORLDS BETTER if your into auto trans.' SMG's are always so 'clunky' shift really rough, especially at lower RPM. Makes anyone look like a noob when you're driving. S54's are so awesome that having that crappy SMG bolted to it is really a buzzkill. I'm a VW/ Audi and BMW tech that's been turning wrenches on these and pretty much anything with an engine for a little more than 25 years. The amount of SMG failures I've seen alone also makes this swap mandatory IMO. Like a completely different car with the manual. Good video. Thanks for sharing man. 👍

Awesome walkthrough man, I'm also doing a SMG to manual swap on jack stands and I got 2 questions.
    1. I have an EWS delete so my EWS module isn't plugged in. Will that cause issues with the one pin that goes into the EWS plug?
2.I also have a Buildjournal tune, I know on they offer re-tuning and they have an option for "I am now SMG". Is that all thats needed to clear the smg cog? or is more tuning needed?

There is no comparison between a manual and sequential transmission if you’re gonna buy an M3 and you don’t buy a six speed then you might as well not buy an M3 because you’re just wasting your money!
On the proud owner of a 2002 E 46M3 naturally aspirated pro charged M3 convertible that is a six speed manual. That is the ultimate driving machine not an automatic or a sequential.

If you’re going to knock smg you might as well knock the convertible too because of the extra weight.
