About the Speaker:
Dr. Atif Mian is the John H. Laporte, Jr. Class of 1967 Professor of Economics, Public Policy, and Finance at Princeton University. He began his academic career in 2001 after completing his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT. Before joining Princeton in 2012, he taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

I was lucky enough to physically attend this session. It was amazing. Not many people know that Dr. Christoffe Jaffrelot was there too. I, along the some other young men had a rather detailed discussion about Pakistan in particular and Indo-Pacific region in general.

A big slap by Dr Atif Mian "can you give me a position?" This guy is a real nationalist who wants to do something for his motherland. I am an Indian and do hear Dr Atif's views on multiple forums and it looks like he has something in him to do good for his motherland. But the elephant in the room has some other plans. For elephants, the focus is not the country for sure!

I would request Mr Atif Mian to talk about our population growth. I feel that our fertility rate of 3.3% is our biggest issue. In fact it is the mother of all economic issues we have.
India’s fertility rate is 2%. They have restricted their population to 2.5 times since 1972 whereas our population had grown 4 times. This practically means that we have accumulated 80 million extra people to feed and educate.
Bangladesh has follwed the Indian model.
Mian Atif can throw some professional light on this aspect.
Apparently, Atif Mian is the 2nd most popular Ahmadi muslim from pakistan after Dr. Abdus Salam who was also an Ahmadi muslim. #AhmadiMuslim
Pakistan biggest problem is the priority of Islam and religion over other things. Religion doesn’t pay your bills or grows your economy.
Science, Math, education leads to learning and enlightenment and eventually economic growth and more.

The fate and conditions of Pakistan is because you guys drove away most progressive and business minded people from Pakistan during partition. The people who migrated to Pakistan were jamindars and nawabs who had no idea how to run and manage businesses, they were simply good how to exploit people under their control that’s what they have been doing for the last 76 years. As simple as that. For Pakistan to grow forward, ban mullas, military, short sighted politicians. Keep religion at home, no hatred to non believers, bring back progressive, talented, visionary Pakistanis and let them run your country till the Pakistani public get civilized.

Until this happens I doubt if any University Professor from the West would like to be posted in Pakistan.

Pakistan doesn't need any advice as they will never change.
Excellent lecture & discussion. Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed has emphasised that one of the chief causes for partition was that the landed gentry of Punjab, were against land reforms (as said by Nehru in his 1936 speech), socialism which then under the garb of religion became the cause for partition. This now remains one of the chief resistance for changes such as taxation. The problem started then and continued.

Atif is a smart person. He clearly is talking about things from a place where these things works which is US. Now coming to Pakistan, one has to not reinvent the wheel, but learn from other countries what has worked and what hasn’t and why. Then adapt those working policies to Pakistan.
Who in Pakistan is going to do all of this? Many of these feed into what people call nation building. Building of institutions, processes, bureaucracy and legal systems to deliver on those macro ideas and concepts. This take huge effort and many retries. Sadly, these things take atleast 2 generations for a country that started fresh. Since Pakistan has had 4 generations born since it’s creation, and a country that has systems in place that don’t work, getting Pakistan on the right track personally looks like an impossible feat with the leaders it has. If Pakistan had what India has, then atleast we know the people at the top care about these things and want to fix things and make change. Who is Pakistan’s Modi?
Pakistan’s future is bleak. It won’t survive another generation is my assessment.

I guess one key point which was not discussed during the discussion was to clean our rotten justice system first before asking foreign investors or faculty to come and train us.
Hate to say this but they might get blasphemy cases rooted against them through oppositions own personal agendas. This is the bitter truth of today and it’s not just in small cities or towns, it is certainly becoming a part of Pakistani norm now. This shift of religious extremism to normality is the first thing to happen.

Problem with Pakistan is that intellectuals like these two are in the periphery.
Decision making is in the hands of the Army, ISI and their appointed political elite.
So, whatever you discuss in a room becomes irrelevant in Pakistan.
Add to this the huge level of illiteracy, fundamentalism, hatred of India and Hindus and you know why this nation cannot ever rationally decide to bury the hatchet and trade with India even if that is the rational think to do and that is the thing that will save Pakistan's economy.
Every guest has repeated 100 times about education, Army interference etc... is the main reason for Pakistan's condition 😂

Very few audiences.. looks like Pakistani youth are more interested in religious matters .
Pakistani army-politicians-jamindaar-elite: "The world is round. If we keep going backward, we will eventually end up in the first spot."
Here is another comparison with Bangladesh. The best thing that came out of 1971 was that we got rid of the Pakistani Army, bureaucracy, and zamindar elite politicians. The parasites who are eating your pie right now. We enjoyed a prosperous economic growth from 1977-2006.
Then Sheikh Hasina came to power. During her past 15 years of illegitimate rule, she brought back all the bad elements of Pakistan. She replaced the Pakistan army with the police, and made her close allies into billionaire elites.
The only difference is that the Pakistani elites and army are huge in numbers and collectively drain the country’s wealth. In Bangladesh, Hasina and her few cronies have hoarded all the wealth and hard-earned dollars from the people.
That’s why there are no billionaire Generals or thief brothers in Pakistan. They barely stole $100M. But Hasina’s cronies are all billionaires. One is Aziz Khan from Summit Group, the 41st Billionaire in Singapore.
Hasina herself has more than $50B in her stash. All the projects cost 4x more than the normal price. Bangladesh has over $100B foreign debt, and the real number is unknown.
The question is who will bell the cat? (Military, maulvi)

Atif Mian is bemoaning 75 years too late!
Pakistan was founded on the basis of ideology.
Science was never a factor in its creation.
Jinnah knew as much about Science as my rear end knows about Mars!
At least Nehru, though not a Scientist, encouraged setting up of Scientific institutions in India but not Jinnah.
Worse still, always the quintessential British gentleman, Jinnah told, soon after Pakistan was founded, to a bewildered Bengali crowd in Dhaka in his immaculate British accented English, that they would all have to henceforth learn Urdu and not Bengali because that was going to be the national language of Pakistan!
Pakistan and Science do not go together and even if some people with good intentions tried result would be a disaster.
Case in point Dr Abdus Salam, the only Nobel laureate Pakistan produced. He spent much of his life outside Pk as he was ostracized for being an Ahmediya.
