The Electric Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher) is quickly becoming one of my favorite cichlids. The reasons are many and I talk about each of them in this fish profile video: The Electric Blue Acara!
Have you kept an Electric Blue Acara? What was your experience keeping this fish. What food did he or she enjoy the most? What tank mates were best, or didn't work out well? Please share any tips you might have since I'm relatively new to keeping these beautiful fish! We all learn from each other, so share your tips in the comments below.
    Never forget that YOU ROCK!
A BIG shout-out to The Cichlid Shack for these beautiful Acara. See below for both details about the Shack and a couple exclusive discount codes you can use.

@@klypz85 Hello. The males are generally larger and have a longer trail on their tail fin. Their heads are darker and have more of a pronounced hump. If one is isolating, it could be because others have paired up, it could be protecting fry or a potential breeding spot. 😊

Good evening from Rapid City South Dakota.. I have kept EBA for many many years and have had multiple pairs that Have spawned for me. In fact I have a tank Full of juveniles that measure about 2 to 3" that I'm trying to give away. I keep them in a 75 gallon tank with large angel fish and they get along famously. Contrary to what some people think they do not uproot plants as I have a tank full of Amazon and crypts. They do indeed get a little protective when they are spawning but after the spawns they are gentle giants. Just for the record EBAs are indeed from South America. While acaras are native species, the electric blue acaras curs are hybrids and do not occur in their natural habitat

I bought 4 Electric Blue Acaras with the aim of getting a breeding pair and that happened rather quickly. Twice eggs have been laid on live plant leaves, but both times all were gone before wrigglers appeared, which is normal I suppose, it is a learning process protecting from other tank mates and caring for their eggs. The other two are smaller, a male and probably a female and the male has fought the alpha male a few times over the big female, who seems happy with that and allows both to dance for her. I was going to sell the two smaller one's but was advised not to let the smaller male go, as he will keep the alpha on his toes and doing his duty for his partner.

Got 5 of these @1" from Roger at Hung Ming in SF. They were my first expensive cichlid. Put them in 60 liter with some black angel growouts This was 2013
Anyway in 6 months had mated pair that spawned in that tank Fell in love with the
female as she ferociously defended her wigglers
Put them in 125 with big plecos foot long
P.joselimai and some others that I'd rehome with HM. Never spawned them again but gave them to Roger when I left bay area. He said he made a special effort to find them a good home Was keeping them with G.winemilleri school at end Most beautiful easy cichlid ever kept. Probably a morph from Trinidad population of A pulcher. Ideal community fish Nowadays would put in 75 with Apistos, Laetacara or red head Tapajos

The only issue I ever had with EBAs was when there were two females and one male. The male chose one female over the other than ousted the neglected female. The male would constantly harass and chase away the ousted female. My solution to this was I rehomed the male and kept the two females since I do not want breeding. Other than that my two females are in a 75 gal with skirt tetras, buenos aires tetras, red tail shark, apistogramma cacatuoide and a pearl gourami. All are fine but the two EBAs are the tank bosses. Btw Ben, you have a male and a female :)

Just got some Blue acara. I'm new to the hobby about a year now. Few tanks and 1 African cichlid tank. My local pet shop told me to add the acaras to my Africans cichlid tank. It does not work. One was over night attacked, ripped fins, etc. The other one seems ok but hanging on for life looks like it. Luckily due to my research over the past year I have a hospital/quarantine tank. They are both in there and seems to be already in a better state of mind. I should have done my own research as I now come across not to add to my African cichlid tank but rather to some of my other aquariums.

“Electric blue” is just a recent color morph of the blue acara (Andinoacara pulcher), which naturally has blue spangles instead of blue all over. It’s not clear whether the electric blue morph arose from artificial selection, or forced hybridization with “electric blue” ram cichlids (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), and it may have some health problems due to inbreeding. Better to say that the perfect cichlid is the blue acara, and not necessarily its “electric blue” color sport.

  • @accadaccasteve
    @accadaccasteve 2 года назад +1

Not any help in anyway but I keep a Blue Acara with a Jack Dempsey. I've had them together for around 6 or 7 months. There's never been an issue between these 2. They are juvies and the JD is probably an inch bigger than the Acara, but they're the best of mates. The JD has killed 2 plecos in this time, one that was the same size as him and one that was larger. So I think it's just the Blue Acara and the JD in this tank for now. The Blue Acara has never shown any aggression at all and neither has the JD toward the Blue Acara.

    • @BenOchart

I have 2 males got them very young almost 2 yrs ago, hoped to get a pair didn’t work out that way! Raised up with a chocolate cichlid and now 2 severums! I found my EBA to be nasty at times countless unprovoked attacks on the chocolate as a juvenile leaving scars, with sneaky dive bomb attacks to the top of the head. Same things with the severums! Outside my Africans cichlid and Brichardi there the meanest cichlid I’ve ever kept!

Try feeding a little more so he’s not looking for more food. You might have a killer and if you do the only solution is to get rid of him.

Well you might not notice any fights and aggression between your two Boys’ 🤔😆👍 but once you get more than two Boys, when Ladies comes in , AcaraLove is up… they are fairly territorial. 🤪😳🫤 Certainly way less like any other cichlids but are cichlids though
