It's been a long time since a music production video has made me smile this much. Your love and passion is infectious and it's a joy to watch you still exhibit as much wide eyed child excitement as you probably did the first time you used a synth. Watching the last 60 seconds made me realise I'd hire you in a heartbeat if I owned a synth compamy. Subbing and will be back often to enjoy your show Ricky.
Got my Summit this week. This tutorial is by far the most valuable I've seen so far. This gives so much insight. Trying everything you do at this moment. There is a world to explore
Brilliant tip, thank you so much! Korg Prologue users can menu dive to achieve this. Edit Mode > Program Edit. 5th Red glowing button press till > LFO KEY Sync ON / LFO Voice Sync Off / EG Velocity (value). Don't forget to set LFO RATE and INT.
Mikeureko’s Prologue settings work about the same for the Minilogue! Got some wild dancing oscillators going on. Settings work just a little differently on the Minilogue XD at least: hit edit mode and then press the fourth lit button on the sequence bar to change the LFO settings. EG settings are the fifth light.
Been struggling to find motivatation for music recently, but after watching this all I wanna do is storm out of the office, drive home and jam. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep it up.
I absolutely LOVE this guys enthusiasm for sound design. Seems really chill too. Seems like the type of guy I'd chill with while messing around with synths and smoking some bud :D
Part of the beauty of modern synths is discovering all this power. Vintage synths... are very cool and led us to where we are. But modern synths with great tuning and multiple LFO's and powerful routing configuarations. Yeah, gimme that!
When those unsynched LFOs first kicked in I almost had tears in my eyes. So moving. Man, this video is awesome. I could watch this forever. THANKS! (Plus, now I have to get a Peak haha)
Dude, I know nothing at all about music or synths but I keep coming back. I just enjoy watching someone with such intimate knowledge of the topic. I wish I had a subject for which I had such expertise.
The enthusiasm with which you explain all this stuff is infectious. I just found out about your channel and can't wait to see the rest of your videos. Keep it up Ricky.
„This was an initialized patch not long ago..“ Since working with Peak this thought has appeared so often in my mind. Such a versatile and lovely instrument. Thanks for this great information!
one thing i love about your vids is how much in depth you go while explaining the subject of the video, but then as soon as you send us off you go totally nuts with the synth. great stuff!
That is VERY COOL! In particular, hearing new rhythms in it. Your percussion track could arrive in your head out of what you're hearing in this phase exercise. Nice.
Thank you so much, man. I have a Korg Minilogue XD and I was always confused about why the Envelope Generator was synced to each voice, but the LFO wasn't. It was listed as something I didn't understand, so I never messed with it. Now numerous patches are exactly what I wanted them to be. Thanks again!
Other polysynths might require fairly different approaches to get similar results. For example I don't think the Synthstrom Deluge allows its polyphonic LFO (LFO2) to have phase adjusted or offers a "free," but it does allow modulating frequency by note with adjustable depth (for repeating unpredictable rhythms) or by a random value for each note (for non-repeating rhythms).
Ricky i subscribe BECAUSE of you geeking out on details. There aren't a ton of content providers who do this, and in such a genuine manner. It's so easy to get engaged by your videos because it's obvious you truly care and are excited by what you talk about. So fuck any who turn their nose up at details, for they are blind to the joys of the rabbit hole.
Absolutely loved this video! Learned some new things that I'm pretty sure I can bring to my Deepmind 12. As it is I already love the parameter drift capability on it and often set my lfo's to different things like you did here. If I actually have one per voice that I can set free like that to the different voices though I will be incredibly stoked! I love LFO's and this is is like learning instead of 2 I might actually have 2 for each of the 12 voices? That's insane to even think about!
@RickyTinez: Thanks for this awesome video. As some other guys on this channel I tried it immediately on my peak, virus ti2 and prophet rev 2. It's quite interesting that on rev 2 you can get a similar sounding effect pressing the key sync knob. Switching on the virus all of the lfos are oscillating as free as they should from the beginning. So this seems to be a special thing on the peak (may be a bug?) as switching on this great machine the lfos of each voice are in synchronized phase . Once you brought the lfos to real independing oscillating it works on every patch.
Here's another trick for dephasing LFOs, not sure if it applies to the Peak but I use this on my Prophet 12: In the mod matrix assign note value to LFO rate by a small amount. Now every note you play will change the rate of the LFO slightly so they will never really be in phase with each other.
If you want that analog magic Do the same (Note Value) and matrixe it to the SCALING by a small amount of -1 or -2 That would do the trick if you want to leave the LFO’s alone. It Works on prophet 8 REV2 also
Beautiful examples here Ricky. The idea of the LFOs for each voice being in sync but starting at different phase points is brilliant - you can't hear them, but they're off and running in the background, waiting for something to be played so they can do their thing...nice! Many thanks.
@Ricky Tinez - You need to make more videos at this level! with you 100%! It's clear you have a lot of really deep knowledge to share, due to your closeness to the companies that design these things.
i love your channel man. i may not speak out in the comments but i watch every video and you influence my sound design and gear purchases man. thanks for everything you do. It's greatly appreciated.
one of the great things about jx3p and a small handful of other roland poly synths of the time was the introduction of the 'delay' parameter on the LFO
This is so cool! I've just started messing around a bit with LFOs on my Peak. The way you manage to make this synth sound just makes me fall in love with it more and more.
its crazy how far you can push it. and the wavetale OSCs give each patch a new sound and texture to start from which is nice. vs the traditional analog waveshapes that can feel rinsed pretty quickly.
The DeepMind 12 has that implemented in a much more convenient way: You do not have to set that for each LFO but instead you select: * Key Sync on/off * Phase poly/mono/spread (selectable 0-180°)
Love the enthusiasm, mate :) It was indeed a truly lovely sound, at the part when you said "oof, I'm done". Warm, smooth sounds, with a little rhythm to it. Good stuff.
What I like about that: it's putting something like an organic, slightly chaotic vibe to an otherwise rather sterile, "disciplined" patch. Will try to reproduce this with the rather cheap hardware I have at my disposal (DM 12)...
Novation should add a "Random" option for the LFO Phase setting to do this automatically. (That won't let you control relative offsets, but voices don't necessarily play in order anyway.) A fixed phase offset for every next note played could also be pretty interesting. Or, imagine adding a sequencer track to control LFO phase and running it in key trigger mode.
100% agree with this, a 'random' and 'spread' phase option might work well, where 'spread' sets evenly spread phase offsets across the voices. As an aside, it would also be nice if there was a way to reset the LFO at initial keypress when the arp is on, without it resetting for every note that the arp plays...
Not really any true Random in digital. It would make a "seed" value as the changing number for a random value. Analog is where real "random" is possible.
This is basically what i constantly do on my custom Roland Gaia patches and it's really really easy to achieve on that synth. You can either link all 3 Synth layers together so they all use the same LFO routing parameters or you assign them individually. I mostly use it a lot for dynamic pads or for self-oscillating filter noise sounds. It's insane how complex they become even with just 3 individual layers. Combined with some delay and reverb (or pitch-shift) you can shape it even more.
Dude. Full good vibes on this channel and the way you go over things. Draws one in and maintains attention voluntarily. Thanks for making this. Was super solid to watch and learned a lot. 🤙
Also - could totally feel that shift into happy inspirational buzz when you turned fixed chord off (@17:24) and then sunk into that progression and let it journey. That shit was beautiful. Haha thanks again homie!
Dude that was extremely helpful insight! I am now sitting here staring at my (lately) not so much used Peak. I HAD NO IDEA. Time to plug some cords and get my hands on the keyboard.
Dude just discovered your channel 2 days ago from this vid, and i have now watched this vid 5 times. the way you slowly arrive at that beautiful patch is so satisfying and the sound is stuck in my head. Love your content and cant wait to watch more. Trying to get similar sounds with my Minilogue now hut unfortunately i think the parameters are too limiting, plus just 1 LFO… dont think i can edit phase points
This really is quite good, for anything that's polyphonic and runs an LFO per voice and can run free. I've fooled around with a lot of synth gear, but I'd never thought of this exact one: thank you :)
Awesome! I love this kind of thing that happens, when your knowledge in two separate fields gives you a unique insight (in this case, the synth circuit/engineering and the music)
Since you work for novation and all.. could you ask them to add "Rndm" as an option for the Phase Point value? Then we can save it in the patch and have this awesomeness immediately. Novation is usually great with the updates.
I guess this is handled differently on different synths. Sometimes you just don't get the option. Sometimes you set the LFO to be used as an envelope. Sometimes you create an envelope with a repeating section...
This is a really cool technique. You have done a great job of helping me better understand how modulation can be used to create motion in patches. This is something I often hear but can't intuitively replicate in my head because modulation can get pretty complex pretty quickly. I will have to do more experimenting and learning because it's probably one of the coolest aspects of a synthesizer.
Great idea for a vid/great vid! For me I realized this evolving concept when I first used pcm sample based synths like Roland D550 or K2000 because they are based on partials each with their own multistage envelopes so creating lush evolving pads means spending some time editing those, of course synthesis provides many ways of "evolution" of different parameters and this is also a great one.... (and on THIS tip I would say I learned about this concept from eurorack/modular when I encountered Quadrature functions/ oscillators with different spread parameters as is possible with 0_c )
If you want to do this in serum, you can modulate the fine tuning with an envelope set to retrig and then double down and modulate that fine tune with either (or both!) chaos filters I like to uncheck the BPM box in the envelope settings to create a less specific timing of it. You can also do the above (Retrig/Chaos) of that timing of the envelope for some truly crazy beautiful sounds.
Amazing video man. I have learned so much from you already, and this took things to the next level. So excited to take some time playing with this tomorrow!!
This was a really great video. The synth techniques are of course totally inspiring, but more than that, the video was just super calm and a pleasure to watch. Thank you
@@RickyTinez You are too kind 🙏 I'd be honored if you checked out my stuff (specifically my "new patch" video) because it is thanks to you - but I wouldn't want to post a link here. Thank you for making such great videos and sharing the love!
Nice! Sick patch too!! On the Prophet 5 and 6 you can achieve this free flowing LFO thing with the Polymod! OSC 2 becomes the LFO in Low Freq mode, but if you leave "Key tracking" on, the higher you play, the faster the LFO for that voice is. This creates so much organic movement. Good stuff!
That was amazing at the end! I gotta do some menu diving with my MicroKorg but this inspired me to create some new patches using LFO's to my advantage. Thank you for this.
Your outro gave me goosebumps, thank you for that. Regrettably, I don't believe I will be able to easily achieve this trick with my current mono semi modular analog synth. Being broke and wanting polyphony isn't fun, but we will see what the future holds.

Novation should add a "Random" option for the LFO Phase setting to do this automatically. (That won't let you control relative offsets, but voices don't necessarily play in order anyway.)
A fixed phase offset for every next note played could also be pretty interesting. Or, imagine adding a sequencer track to control LFO phase and running it in key trigger mode.

Shit dude, I didn't know the peak could sound so hazy... best use of it I've seen
