You are basically responsible for my passion and love for synthesis I developed over the years. Amazing quality and passion you out into your videos. I love it.
That final jam was immense. I really love these videos that focus mainly on techniques rather than a specific piece of gear. I find I can almost always use something from your videos on whatever gear I have, in this case the digitone. I especially loved the little pitch wiggle at the start of the note. Really gave it character.
I must admit the ambiance of the lighting using the lava lamp in the background is dope. Thanks for the Novation love. Great camera edits and audio mix. Gratefully.
Title is so understated -- there are SO MANY different FM synthesis tricks sprinkled throughout this video, and each of them could have its own dedicated video.
I love it. I totally relate to the part where one can get lost into synthesis, vibing to the patch you've created and introducing all these variations, listening to the effects feedback and exploring all the settings. The PEAK is perfect for that because the layout is so easy to use.
So I'm a huge noob with synthesizers, but I thought you might like to hear that every time you make a nice sounding patch in one of these videos, I always find myself pausing, and trying to recreate it as best I can on my KORG MinilogueXD. I'm obviously not going to get a sound like what youre getting out of Peak, but just hearing your explanations of how certain sounds are made always inspires me to try those techniques out for myself and just play with it. Super grateful for how you step through this stuff.
As far as I remember the oscillators in the Model D have no key sync. They are completely free running and very hard to tune, this is surely part of the characteristic fat Moog sound. The keyboard sync is mostly useful when you want to obtain special phase-cancellation effects between oscillators and you want that behavior to be consistent, and is also useful, of course, for particular FM effects. The frequency information coming from the fastest attack time in any envelope generator will be much more relevant than the frequency information coming from the oscillator not starting from zero.
@@RickyTinez thank you for your videos! Always super inspirational! I recently worked on a circuit modeled Model D plugin and I love nerd talks, it was fun to share some information!
"the teeny tiny miniscule things" indeed! As I just, literally 10 minutes prior to watching this (3:30pm PST), on a gut-feeling fueled, calculated whim, ordered the Peak as my next synth. Thank you, Universe for the nod and thank you, Enrique, from someone who looks at the ocean and thinks (or perhaps 'feels') "LFO". I, as do many others, really find your content and energy so valuable and palatable. You help me articulate what this all about for me. HTG!
Really timely. I was just trying to work out how FM synthesis worked on this thing. The manual doesn’t even seem to discuss it at all. Thanks for another awesome video!
Had a long comment written, but basically... something special happens to the sound at 25:43. It goes from a (great) FM noodle to this lonely melancholic melody that, when paired with you saying "I hope you're ok" right after, hits me like a truck. I'm a few years and re-watches late but just wanted to share that.
This is great. Wasn't really using my peak for FM stuff. These remind of sounds I used to create on my Yamaha SY-22 but this is way easier. thanks a lot. Love your videos.
I like to pretend that for hours after the ending of the video Ricky kept exploring fm soundscapes eventually reaching a state of transcendentalism, the walls of his room float away and there's a colorful nebula in the background pulsing with the oscillator sync. Lmk in the next video if that happens 😉
One of the best of your videos imo yet. All those sounds are amazing! Kind of a shame you did not connect with the Digitone yet, this video just makes me go back to mine ;)
In the 11 minute mark I was thinking damn this is some weird and wild FM work, Ricky then speaks my mind hahaha super informative video! Love all the content!
This whole week it’s been about fm and deciding weather to invest in the Korg opsix or add to my Elektron collection with the Digitone. Then to cap it of Ricky brings out the fm capability of the peak 👍🙏
Awesome stuff, reminded me why I'm subscribed and why I need to get a hardware synth. Would love to see a long form video of you going down the rabbit hole with no agenda some time, do you ever stream? A youtube stream would be a good vehicle for that sort of thing, no pressure though. Anyway thanks for everything Ricky, appreciate it
I came for the lesson, I stayed for the blue whale. You do a great job demonstrating the depth of the Peak. I'd love to get my hands on one to just sit and design different patches for it. ✌🏼
Great info! The Peak (or Summit) is such a fat/warm poly synth, I sometimes forget that it’s capable of far more than just common analogue sound. After only a few weeks working with mine, I find it very intuitive, and easy to create some amazing custom patches that rival my other synths. However, I agree, it can be super easy to forget what you were doing, and end-up going down the ‘rabbit hole’ getting lost for hours bathing in synth goodness ;-)
key sync makes sense in a context where you have tuned relationships- like FM, or doing modern dance bass sound design with tuned delays/combs/flanges/freq shifts etc. and want perfectly repeatable results. I don't like it in other synth patches, especially analog style ones; with multiple oscillators you get a rich phasing from them being free running, and even with one oscillator it adds some slight variance to each note.
i was wondering if I would be able to sequence my EX800 with the A4 and get it up into FM range with the A4 LFOs, but keytracking is the thing that you need to keep it in tune up and down the keyboard, yeah?
@@isaac.anthony keytracking is different from key sync, but yeah, in order to do FM that's consistent across all notes, your LFO would need to be keytracked. Without tracking you can make some gnarly FM sounds on individual notes, tho, presuming the LFOs on it go into audio range and can modulate the VCOs pitch.
Wow, was just watching a bunch of videos about the Peak and this pops up in my subs. Having just bought a NDLR, I *really* can't afford a Peak now......damnit :D
Using keysync or resetting the osc, i found is important if you want to make kicks or 808s in a synth play the same everytime and also have that transient quality.
That organ-like timber you got near the end reminded me of the intro theme from The Equalizer (loved that show.) Interesting to see the Peak go in directions some don't push it into.
pretty sure Model D oscillators were free running, not key synced - you can hear it in character of sound when you turn on all 3 oscillators (all saw) and then slightly detune oscillator 2 and 3 - that "chorus-like" sound (legendary on model d) is direct result of free running oscillators (with micro out-of-tune inaccurscies), when you do same thning with key synced oscillators, it soudns different (it get's sorta flanger-risch color) Actually vast majority of old analog synths have free running oscillators, making key synced oscillatora is a bit more complicated in analog domain, plus near to impossible for synths which are not digitally controlled. (VCOs) btw i think unison sounds almost always better with free runing oscillators ;-)
@@coyotesynth i'm not completely sure what is "in your face" but the amazing fat huge sound of Model D and other old analog synts comes EXACTLY from the fact they are free runing :-) This and subtle oscillator detunings (which can be emulated by very subtle rand lfo -> osc pitch modulation). Thanks to free running, the are creating constant changes which gives feeling of organic living sound .. in contast with that, lead made from phase synced oscillators is very much static, not changing .. so in genreral - free runing oscillators are great for warm leads, pads, and stuf like that - where you want to have organic everchanging sound, and key synced oscillators are great for percussive sounds, especially for kickdrums and toms they are totally crucial. Also for bass sounds ofthen synced oscillators works better because you can avoid phase cancellation (if you use more oscillators) and you get more consistent bass sound. On other side, for example all kinds of sounds where you want to use oscillators detuning and expecially unison to get fat wide rich sound for leads and pads, using key sync is exactly what you DO NOT WANT :-)
@@Sirius-qr4vu it's not super complicated, just on old analog synths (especially those with VCOs not DCOs) it is not that usual. Some do have it, but lot more of them don't. And anyway it has nothing to do with famous warm wide sound of old moog synths - legendary model D sound was caused (of course that's just one of reasons) by exact opposite - free running oscillators.
You might be right about the model d minimoog, But I can tell you because I have one, is the subsequent 37 has KB reset button which does this which tour explaining here and otherwise they are free running at all times, One drawback about using the keyboard reset button on a vco synth is you will get a harsh click at the beginning or end of each press so you have to use a bit of attack or release to mitigate. Peak with its digital oscillators most likely would be much more accurate on the KB reset process which i imagine is why you don't get this side effect In as great of magnitude. Typically the KB reset on the sub 37 is used to get a really punchy bass sound, I haven't played with the keysync enough on my peak to know yet (hence I'm watching your tutorial). But ya thanks for the interesting pointers I'm definitely going to try it out. And take my comments with a grain of salt this is mostly just based on my personal experience.
