    Great work Steve. I loved how you gave us all the information we needed to make our own decisions. I realise this wasn’t possible with the braid video so it is great to see how you were able to navigate through all this for the fluoro.

    Thanks for confirming in my mind about the performance of the Crystal line from Schneider...I guess the Barra boys will be reconsidering leader choices now...personally I have been using the Schneider crystal off the rocks for the last 12 months...cheers B.J.

    After some research and having viewed some videos on flurocarbon leaders, I bought Shimano Ocea Leader 25lb and 30lb, and so far I can say that the 25lb is not as tough as expected . It get cuts and other damage easily along the line and it has a weak knot strength (especially when there is impact or shock). It has low memory and low visibility though (clear line) compared to some other fluorocarbon lines which are more on the white/cloudy side.

    • @redtobertshateshandles
      @redtobertshateshandles Год назад

      It's all about knot strength. Not tested and the results are useless. Did their brand not tie well???

    • @shantoshseewooruttun5105
      @shantoshseewooruttun5105 Год назад

      @@redtobertshateshandles the knots hold well in the case of other good fluoro and mono (nylon and copolymer) fishing lines, even in some lower quality lines. I am speaking about Ocea Leader only here, not the whole Shimano brand. Ocea Leader is simply not as good as expected and claimed. It gets cut easily and breaks off easily if rubbed on rock or coral (even the 30lb; I lost a fish of less than 20lb after line snapped somwhere where there was no knot but probably got damaged by a structure), and as mentioned, the 25lb snapped at knots when there is a shock or impact.

    Great tests, really well done. If you are keen to do some more playing with numbers, I know it isn’t apples to apples as the sand paper was different grits, I was wondering what the braid cross section to the fluoro would be.
    And I don’t know how you would do it, as I have no idea when it comes to light, but is there a way to tell how visible the lines were, or see how they refract light? Probably too hard and expensive to test though.
    While I’m asking for the world, did you notice the suppleness and knotting abilities were much different between lines?
    Thanks.

      We did run a FC on the braid sandpaper and the one test went over 400 rotations. Most braids were less than 50.

    May be, strength is not a function of diameter (mm), but area of cross-section (mm^2). I would be interesting to see the difference between the two graphs.

  • @SamDewing
    @SamDewing 3 года назад +1

    Pretty interesting results there. Do you think you would ever test lines lower in strength? I wonder if there is much difference in say a 4lb leader in strength and thickness. I'm sure there are a few bream fishermen that would be interested.

    Everyone of these videos I watch I wonder why the line testing machines don't test the elongation of the line at the same time. The info can be plotted on an x/y graph with stretch (displacement) on the X and force on the Y. Knowing the area of the line you can get the Normal Stress of the line (F/A) and that's the Y. Then knowing the elongation (displacement) you can divide that by original length giving you the normal strain of the line on the X. This tells you so much more about the line.

  • @craigparker4108
    @craigparker4108 2 года назад

    A little secret is normal nylon out performs fluorocarbon in knot strength & abrasiveness easily & is dirt cheap in comparison. It's not invisible in water but neither is fluro, just have a look for yourself. For maybe a slight advantage in clear water it's more than 4 times the price. I still use fluro cause i had a stock of it in many line classes & rarely bust leaders in lake Mac. But if your on a tight budget you can drop 5 pounds in nylon & have no downside except in clear winter water.

    Schneider crystal clear suffix 100% and finally Shimano Oceanic that's the way my money would go but I've got to admit I'll probably go with the suffix 100% just depends on which one of the tourists cheapest when I buy or if I'm literally going for crystal clear

    Hi, this is such a good test and review. Are you aware of any companies doing test like you did in Europe or the US? I've got some fly fishing leader lines I'd like them to test. Or else, would you be interested to test some line if I were to ship it to you? Flyfishing leader pocket size spool cost a leg so I am not planning on shipping a whole pack just a few...

    • @FishingMonthly
      @FishingMonthly  3 года назад

      Not that I know of ..... it's not our testing machines - we used the ones from Platypus fishing lines in Brisbane, Australia. You might be able to reach out to them to see if they do outside tests....

    •  3 года назад +1

      @@FishingMonthly Thanks! Turns out there is one organization in the US doing their own testing called IGFA.org (validating world record catch) they only test the breaking point to "qualify" and validate a world record. Downside is, it cost 40USD per test and per line so it's not that cheap!!!! ruclips.net/video/AXJ74B1Tfpc/видео.html

    Great vid. It sure would’ve been easier on you to not to have done all the math if you’d have purchased them based on as close to equal diameter than what the box says they’re rated at. I pay no attention to lb test #s when I compare. Similar diameter only.

    Without knots involved the tests are useless. I can micrometer my own line. I keep my line away from abrasion. I buy the big spools of Vanish not the tiny expensive spool of leader stuff. IMO it's exactly the same.
