Ask for the price before making your order. One stall in Saigon asked for 100,000 ($4) after he made my bap xao. I asked him several times slowly if he was sure it was that much, but ended up paying. In Saigon some will overcharge you without hesitation if you look like a tourist, so ask for price first.

With hindsight any colonization is bad in principle, the british would have invested more into it and left it a better state. But the american war (as u know it. Vietnam war in west) is the main reason foreigners r interested in visiting ur country. So much social change came on the back of it in western societies its still hold fascination and historical significance. But this bubble will burst. U need return tourism. And currently not many return.

In Mexico we have a similar food to the Spicy Savoury Mango but in Mexico we just add chili powder, salt, and lime no savoury things like shrimp salt or fish sauce ! Spicy fruit is something that we mexicans love !

Tip: Travelling to Viet Nam, you will need a Vietnamese friend to go along. Why? When you go alone, or go with other foreigners, Vietnamese will think that you don't know anythings about VN so the price of somethings will be higher than usual.
Come to Vietnam, people are hospitable and they are so willing to help you until you might get angry. In all, people just want foreigners to feel like home. We welcome all

I love the way you include a descriptor for each place you visit. I'm determined to widen my food tasting experience when I soon arrive back in Saigon. I love the spring rolls but my experience with them is that they are not all created equal. They vary in size and ingredients. I bought a cheap version at a street vendor and found it wasn't as good as the pricier versions I'd tried. Not that 10,000 dong a pop will break the bank.
