Let's say the Bloomin' Onion is as bad as they say. Let's say the 35 oz steak is as bad as they say. Let's say even the 22 oz steak is as bad as they say. So what? There're many other options in the menu. I've been to Outback and these outsized dishes aren't the norm. Most choices on the menu are much smaller. They just picked a few menu items they don't like and then unload on the restaurant. Not to mention that some people actually like the Bloomin' Onion and 35 oz steak.

I ordered a rib-eye, a very distinctive looking cut. They served a sirloin, basically the opposite looking steak. I can't stand to send food back. The manager came, I gave him the quick "ordered that, got this," and he stared at the plate. It was so obvious and he was stumped. Eventually he said "it could be a rib-eye tip," whatever that is; but he didn't put up a fight. I wonder if the rib-eye that came out next was tenderized under the shoe of the chef, or worse.

joe bob 47 - Well, short term profits are what the top executives care about. They'll make their money (including big bonuses), and they can still live very well off of the investment income if they don't get another high-paying job.
The average person is woefully ignorant of the compensation these people receive. Beyond their salary, bonuses, and stock, they get vehicles and houses paid for (that's multiple houses for one executive). Plus, they get big severance packages. They can run the company into the ground, and they still walk away rich or possibly even wealthy.
One would think that a lot more people would catch on after several government bailouts of airlines, auto manufacturers, and banks, where the executives used part of the money to give themselves big bonuses. But no, lots of Americans think that these people work really hard and/or really smart and deserve the money that they get. And on top of that, many Americans don't think that these people should have to pay a higher top marginal tax rate than upper middle class people or a higher effective tax rate than middle class people. Many Americans have been paying income taxes for decades, and they don't even know what marginal tax rates are or how they work.
But we gotta keep them transgender perverts outta women's public restrooms, right? And we gotta stop them Mexicans (referring to all Latinos) from coming into the country and getting on welfare, right? Even though illegal immigrants don't qualify for any federal benefits, they don't qualify for benefits in most states, and most of them are hardworking and commit crimes at a lower rate than the general population.

Clorox Bleach - There haven't been wage increases across the board, and most lower level restaurant employees are exempted from minimum wage laws.
It's more accurate to say that operating costs have increased for many restaurants because beef and chicken wing prices have significantly increased and the chain restaurants want to maintain or increase their profit margins.
Out of all of the problems in the U.S., wages being too high for most workers is not one of them. Wages have not kept pace with inflation or with productivity, and the wealth gap continues to increase.

It's struggling for the same reason why Chili's, Applebees, Red Lobster, etc. are struggling - It's run by a corporate restaurant group that's more focused on profit margin and efficiency than it is on the quality of food, and everything you're served is like it came off an assembly line and slightly only one step above fast food.

The actually real reason; there are a lot more local restaurants and pubs these days where you can get better food for around the same amount of money. The video did mention that as a reason, but I think that's really it. All the big chain restaurants are just kinda boring and average, this works for fast food because it's fast and cheap, but if I want to sit down and have a nice meal why go with some boring chain restaurant when I can do better? Online reviews have made it really easy to find out where the good local spots are.

I used to work at Outback Steakhouse in the kitchen while I was in highschool. It was a full time job that wouldn't go well in today's society. Working 40 hours a week while still being in high school wouldn't work out because of late night time restraints. But the late 90s was very different from today. I did learn a lot about seasoning meat and cooking and the bosses and managers were great people. Though the boss of where I worked went on to a better job.

Where I lived, those kind of hours for high school kids were illegal even in the 80s. I know because I worked at a truck stop in the 80s while in high school and they tried to make me work overnight on school nights all the time, and later on they actually got busted by the state for doing that. I was too naive to realize they were taking advantage of me at the time.

Last week I walked into an Outback (because even though I love to cook I often also enjoy the "Costly Self Indulgence" of dining out from time to time) and sat at the bar. I was there for probably 20 minutes and was never greeted even once. Some of my observations as I was sitting there where 3 or 4 employees (maybe waiters) standing around the hostess talking among themselves, another 3 or 4 employees walking through the bar looking around but never acknowledging me, and the bartender attempting to help what appeared to be the only 3 tables in the place with customers other than me. So without even getting acknowledged I ended up walking out, I probably could have robbed the place and nobody would have even known as they were more preoccupied on socializing among themselves and avoiding customers that aren't in their section or whatever to even pay attention to anything else. This is why The Outback and other restaurants and customer service establishments are hurting!!!

Yet another "The real reason ___________ is failing" video. Chain restaurants are first and foremost businesses, run by businessmen, with the sole purpose of packing as many people in like cattle, feeding them quickly and getting them out of the door so the next herd can come in. Food quality is waaaaay down on the list of priorities when it comes to these places. You don't get a chef to do your taxes or go over your books, why expect decent food from people who don''t know the first thing about good food ?

We need to change the way the law is applied. Minimum wage should be minimum for EVERYBODY. Sure, prices will go up. And tips (or at least the feeling of being expected to tip) will go down. Ultimately, people will pay the same amount for their meals. The difference is that it will all flow through the employer who would then have to pay payroll taxes on it. And good servers will get tips and bad servers won't.

Outback pulled out of Taiwan about 2 years ago. Burger King maybe has, too. I think Ruby Tuesday is gone, and Singapore/HongKong/Taipei "Dan Ryan's" is gone. Chili's, I'm not sure. TGI Fridays is probably next as they moved from "good place" to "way up on a high floor of a department store." Even local chain "Smokey Joe's" was nearly empty last time I was there on a Sunday afternoon. There are now much less expensive local restaurants that offer similar food, and geared toward local taste. Even local Taipei-based restaurant "Alleycat's Pizza" closed the Tainan City branch after only two years (but I think it's because they opened it in a stupid place--again, up inside a shopping mall. Who wants to park and go in there? Taipei people are used to that, but we Tainaners avoid that if possible. Good food, but too expensive for passers by to say "Hey, let's eat here." and too inconvenient for others to say "Hey, let's go to Alleycat's.")

The steaks are cooked and seasoned to order, aren't ever frozen, and aren't prepared with MSG or any other shit like that. Not sure where you guys got your information from, but most of our food is made fresh in house daily, right down to most of our dressings. When I first started with the company in 2008, every single thing we served was made fresh in house. The company does now deliver some pre made items (like the French fries and some of our dressings), but the majority is still made in house.

I used to like Outback when the prices were reasonable... and it was an indulgence over other places with even more reasonable prices (Logan's, Longhorn, etc.). You could eat for $20 per person (alcoholic beverages not included), and that was fine for once-a-week dinner that you didn't have to worry about cleaning up afterwards. Nowadays, the dinner plate itself costs more than that for a steak that even approaches edible, and that's before any upgrades to sides, drink, or such. The quality of the steak's cook will fluctuate greatly based on the kitchen staff... I typically order medium rare and get steaks that range from blue rare to well done, but rarely (har har) manages to hit that medium rare mark. And, when it does come back with the right cook on it, it's almost certainly going to be under- or over-seasoned. So why am I going to sit there and pay $22 for a New York Strip that 80% of the time is going to be cooked badly, when I can go to Costco and pick up a package of 3 premium cut NYS steaks for $40, or 5 regular cuts for $36? Either of which are actually superior to Outback's offerings? If I'm going to pay that much for a crap piece of steak, I'll spend the extra $10-$15 per person and go to a high end restaurant. Or go to $50 a plate at a Brazilian Steakhouse, where you get bits of the entire selection of phenomenally cooked meats.

Every one of them had the same line when you asked for medium..."That's a little pink in the middle right?"...Uh Yes, medium is a little pink in the middle. Then what you got was so rare it was still moving. So they didn't know how to cook their steaks at all. They were so scared of overcooking because of the bottom line of cooking a new one. The bloomin onion was actually created at chilis. I know because I saw them introduced. Then outback launched and quite a few chilis managers became the first outback manager/investors, and some of the outback menu items were identical to chilis offerings, exactly why Im not sure. For ex, the outback burger was literally the same as chilis, same patties from the same vendor with the same bun cooked on a flat top just like chilis (however they did not sand bag them like chilis). For the bloomin onion, originally they were cut by hand but a couple years later when I worked at outback for a bit they had invented a bloomin onion punch machine, eliminating the tedious vertical cuts (that were only done by someone trained to do so, usually the kitchen manager, too easy to screw up a cut and ruin the bloom). Outback sold so many bloomin onions a night that it was one guys job to cook just those all night. Thats all he did, one menu item. Two fryers all to himself. They did have awesome caesar dressing though, loved that stuff.

+Mr. D. it depends where you are in the country, but local is usually better. National chains use bland flavors because they are more widely accepted. For example, down in Louisiana people are more accustomed to Creole style seasoning, which would not do well when rolled out to a national audience. Also, distribution is a factor. For seafood to be fresh and high quality, it should never go through a central distribution center or be bought in massive bulk quantities. I'm in the Midwest, just outside of St. Louis. There aren't very many places around here that have good ocean fish and crustaceans, but I've found a couple of good places. Catfish and bass are quite popular here because they're local and cheap.

@@---cr8nw That's true, flavors at most national chains are very bland. About distribution, it's not easy for the average person to figure out where their seafood comes from. It helps though if they put on their menu something like "today's catch" or "local catch." I still always have good experiences at Outback though; maybe one could do better locally but compared to other chains at least, it's pretty good.

idk I like the shrimp and crab legs at red lobster a lot but most of their other things arent that great, not as terrible as outback, but not better than most seafood places. but I guess its almost like food can be opinionated too many people think mcdonalds taste good and the only thing I could bare to eat there is maybe a chicken nugget

Guarantee you the #1 reason is the lack of quality that is common with sit-down chain restaurants. Nobody wants microwaved veggies from a steam bag anymore.

I have to say I am glad they are going away it is a premium for subpar steak, add to that the fact the bloomin onion is no longer unique and that literally nothing about it is Australian and it is rebrand or die. 5 years ago finding a place with a specialty item akin to the bloomin onion and 5+ beers on tap was rare, now it expected.

Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, my first dining experiences included Mr. Steak, a visit to the Ensley Grill with Mema (I asked why there were bullet holes in the door and the reply was that the manager had been shot; I was 4) and McDonalds almost every day one summer because Mom knew the fish sandwich was on sale. You cannot imagine how wonderful the Outback seemed to me when it opened; it really was the bomb in its day.

literally every fast food item is packed with a shit ton of sodium. They don't want to waste the food so they stack it with salt. You are eating months old meat. Even the chicken bake from costco has 2k sodium... that's a days fucking worth and even more when the recommendation is 1500 for some.

I worked there for 6 years. I quit. The kitchen(s) are messy (I worked at 4) and the managers refer to the customers as "We like them because they are fat and dumb, not smart." The managers bonuses are being witheld unless they treat servers and employees like robots. If numbers are not met, in regards to computer usage, shifts are cut and manager bonuses removed. They are ruining the company from the inside out and with the food also....

I was invited to go with a friend to the Outback Steakhouse on his birthday. It was the first time we had ever eaten there, and we had heard it was really good food. We asked for Lobster. We got it all right! Have you ever been served Lobster, where the meat was grey? We didn't know any better, so we ate! We found out later, after a spell in the toilet in the hospital, that it was food poisoning, be reason of frozen, possibly outdated, or contamiated Lobster! "Since the meat was grey, it most likely," the Doctor said, "had been in the freezer," and they had to get rid of it, and saw two suckers who didn't know any better. Can you believe it? They had the NERVE to serve it to their customers. I know Lobster has a unique flavor, but this Lobster just didn't taste right! The waitress said it should be fine, but we didn't finish our plate, but what we DID eat was enough to make us sick! The next day, we were both sick, puking, with the back-door trotts, for two days! We both ended up in the hospital, suffering from dehydration, because we could not hold anything down. I WILL NEVER, EVER, EAT AN ANOTHER OUTBACK, "EVER"! I'm sure I'm not the only one with a horror story!
Not to mention the outrageous price they charged for the meal. $60+!! You can say what you want, but I'll NEVER go to any outback again!! This was my FIRST and LAST time EVER!! Give me Sizzler ANYTIME!!!

A proper genuine australian meal wouldn't be a steakhouse but a pub where you ordered counter meals at the bar, things like a meat pie and chips, Parma and pot, mixed grill, roast of the day, seafood basket to name a few

The Outback locations have now upped the quality of their food. I have visited several recently in different States and the quality of the food I have eaten is very good value for the money. The steaks are better quality and seasoned a lot better now. I will be going back a lot more.
