Even though it has "Steakhouse" in the name i don't know a single Brazilian that thinks of Outback when you mention BBQ. People like to celebrate their birthday with friends in Outback or a happy hour event. Usually people eat ribs, onions, french potatoes and that's it. BBQ in Brazil is a whole different story.

Outback is NOT regarded as a typical BBQ restaurant. Most people ask for ribs, the big onion and burgers. Few people eat the expensive steaks. They also like the appetizers with draft beer, which are a Brazilian must-have.
Brazilian BBQ is a completely different experience...it's all you can eat, several types of meats, salads. You go when you want to eat a lot, focus on the food. Outback is more a place for enjoying friends and family or a happy hour place.

As a brazilian, I've been to an Outback in the US (Miami) and plenty in Brazil. Although my sample in US exacts to 1 restaurant I've been, i've realized that in the US there doesn't seem to be the same attention to quality as in Brazil. Weird to say it, but I think there's superior management over here, because every experience I had in Brazil was better than the one in the US. I think it's about someone calling the shots in Brazil regarding management standards.

    • @hewhohasnoidentity4377
      @hewhohasnoidentity4377 11 месяцев назад +102

This is common in the restaurant industry and generally among other US companies expanding internationally.
My theory is they are motivated to expand because they have reached maturity and complacency in the domestic market. They view international expansion as very high risk and high reward opportunities. There is high visibility to executive management and investors. They hire the best local management team they can based on their qualifications and experience. There are no personal relationships to skew the hiring process for the team brought in to build international operations. These managers get direct contact with the executive team in the US. They are given freedom to mold the brand into the local culture.
It is very common for international corporations based in the US to produce a better product and service in foreign markets than in the US.

I'm a dual citizen having a Brazilian mother and American father. I lived 18 years in Brazil, and 20 in USA. I'm married to an American and I can say with certainty that Americans don't care about quality. It's all about cost and taste (sugary, sweet & salty, etc). Parmesan cheese here in US is sold on 700g cannister. In Brazil parmesan cheese, as in most countries around the world is sold in smaller quantity. The quality difference between both products is considered negligible. Many chains here that would succeed in Brazil closed down. One example is Olive Garden vs Romano's Macaroni and Grill. Romano's start you with a glass of house wine, FRESH bread (not fresh out of the oven) and extra virgin olive oil. You can see all the chefs cooking behind a glass. In Olive Garden they look at me weird when I ask for olive oil only to be served with canola oil. I remember when I first took my father-in-law to Pollo Tropical (A fast food joint that sells grilled chicken, rice, beans, potatoes, etc. First thing he asks after getting the chicken: "Can I have some BBQ sauce?". In Brazil even steak is cooked with just salt and we know how to appreciate that. Here in US everything needs to be covered up with something processed.

As a Brazilian I can say that Outback find a good recipe for business in Brazil.
The quality is high, the service is awesome and the price is almost affordable.
The upper midlle class go to Outback to the lunch, to enjoy a happy hour and when they need to solve something in the shopping malls (in Brazil, 70% of the Outback's stores are within shopping malls). On the other hand, the middle class and the lower middle class, can afford the meal in Outback once or twice by month, usually in weekend dinners.
For this reason, the Brand is a place democratic, where almost everybody can enjoy it.
Just for foringners unterstand, for one person eat on Mcdonalds in Brazil, they will spend on avarege 10 dollars, to eat on Outback, the average price is 18 dollars. However, a family can spend less money in Outback than Mcdonalds, because is possible share the plates, reducing the final price.
To finish, it's a mistake compare Outback with our stakehouses (churrascarias), the purpose is completely different.
Brazilians don't go to Outback to eat steaks. We go to eat ribs, onions, potatos and drink beer.

It's simple, the service provided by Outback in Brazil IS NOT the same as in the United States and elsewhere. I'm Brazilian, I've been to the Outback in the United States and the difference to the Outback in Brazil is ABISMAL. This has to do with service, service quality and environmental management. Outback in Brazil is an extremely welcoming environment with EXTREMELY differentiated service that I have only seen in haute cuisine restaurants. It boggles my mind that there is that much local demand here for something considered an uncool chain in the US. But here it has the exported-from-US-cool cache. Similar to how KFC is extremely popular in Japan. Evan though KFC food is nothing special in reality
But in other countries certain things tend to stand out more because it's not something everyday folks commonly consume

Certainly, what explains Outback's success in Brazil is that the brand has found a niche in the country to exploit. While they may not offer the best meat meals and their prices are somewhat high, Outback has deeply understood the culture and offers excellent service, I mean, beyond São Paulo. This has led people to show a willingness to spend more money on the overall experience. In the US Outback seems (to the customer) only another restaurant chain that used to be cool, here we don't have that many options in Brazil to compare, some tried but not suceeded. Also, the food and service are far better in Brazil. So here it's considered almost a premium restaurant chain for the ascending middle class. Most people go for the theme, service and food quality but also because it's different. We still love our barbecue and I would say that's not the real reason people go to outback they go for things that we DON'T have in our own barbecue or other food chain... I think if they keep inovating this can work for a longer time, I think that's the secret, if not it will get old and ordinary as it seems that happens in the US.

I much prefer spending my money at Outback because I receive better service, enjoy a nicer atmosphere, and the food quality is incomparable. Additionally, I appreciate that here in Brazil, Outback offers vegetarian options on the menu, and all of them are quite good. McDonald's, on the other hand, lacks any options for vegetarian customers. It's important for companies to expand and not remain stuck in the past, as seems to be the case with McDonald's. Here in Brazil there is a sucesseful arab-inspired restaurant chain called Habib's. There are all sort of options in the menu, from portuguese pastery to pizzas, including, of course, arab food. And nobody cares if it makes sense or not. I think the botton line for any food place is creating a nice experience, with good food, good service and eventually a different atmosphere from other ordinary places (which is the case of Outback).

interestingly habib's is a brazillian company with a portuguese founder that serves arab food (???). Their supply chain is mostly verticalized and they avoid third-parties so they grow their own wheat to make their own flour and have their own call center... which weirdly got so sucessfull for a call center that they sell call center service for other industries now... weird stuff lol.
And it works...their prices are VERY competitive.

The work ethics of the people that work in international versions of US restaurants is superior.
Which translates to superior customer service, experience, and food.
I have lived in 7 different countries and only the US experience is the subpar one.
Just moved to Japan and you can see how the workers at McDonald’s are working as if they were getting paid $100 an hour.

I'm from Brazil and I'm surprised about Outback's success here compared to other countries. Outback is really good here and exists in all the shopping malls in the state where I live, I've been going there since I was a child, the appetizers are excellent and there's always a lot of food on the plates, the atmosphere is perfect for taking friends or family and the service is always excellent. It is almost always crowded especially on weekends. I must point out that their steak is not made in the same way as here in Brazil, Brazilian steak is much better but Outback steak is also good, the only negative point is the price but nothing out of the standards.

I think the problem with Outback is that it is a lame caricature of Australian culture that might have been popular in the obssesed-with-aussie-slang days of the 80s and 90s. People (at least here) are more inclined to pay more than they really could or should to celebrate moments (aniversary, a successful project at work, a goodbye party etc.). Since Outback is on every shopping mall and they're mostly nearby companies, it's a perfect match. And of course, the lack of competitors here in Brazil (just like everysingle segment in the country) just boost their success.
