So this has probably been retconned - I think these days they're saying that the Orcs used dragons to burn the forests of Quel'Thalas in the Tides of Darkness - but IN MY DAY it was Death and Decay they used: Caer Darrow is where Gul'dan did all of his peak Gul'danning. Doomhammer had kept Gul'dan alive to task him with producing new magical servants who could contest the arcane might of Dalaran and Silvermoon, and this he did by capturing Caer Darrow and perverting the druidic runestone there to create the Ogre Magi. Ogre Magi are OP in that game, but Gul'dan did one better and also created the Death Knights (the OG skeleman kind) to have them unleash an army of the undead against Quel'Thalas. Winter would turn to Spring before the Stormreavers would lose control of the lake, the Alliance finally rooting out the secret Orc bases and Alterac collaborators supplying them, and founding the Paladin order to fight their black magic. What I'm saying is that there was a period of months back in the day where the future site of Scholomance was a nightmarish Orcish doom fortress, surrounded by earthworks bristling with cannon and with magic eyes swarming above, where sorcerous whirlwinds attacked ships and undead haunted the snows. So I've always thought it a small missed opportunity that no one ever has a flashback or a letter from the end of the Second War being like Archmage Antonidas: The Orcs have badly despoiled these lands. It will take our order many years of study and toil to find a cure for this corruption. Archmage Kel'Thuzad: Leave it to me. 100% on it.
They had to retcon that. How would they explain Sylvannas warbringer where she runs carefree through a field of wheat to trip and fall on Frostmourne. In war3 Arthas has trouble to get through because the forest is so dense and protected with magic.
This was one of the best dungeon in vanilla. The later part, with the quick succession of bosses, the butcher, who'd routinely one shot tanks. That was great.
