I've been having trouble with my 70d, it needs the PCP replaced for a second time since I bought it in 2014. Thinking of upgrading to a new one since it costs about $600 to get it fixed anyway and might try the 80d next. I love my 70d and i need flip screen etc. thanks for the video!
I've been using a Canon T3i for two years now because that was the best in my budget at the time of purchase. I'm thrilled to finally auto-focus on a DSLR so I can upgrade! Thanks for your informative videos. :)
Phil Mahoney 38 minutes ago I have what seems to be focus hunting sound on my Canon 70d when shooting video with 24-105 IS Canon lens, I have turned off IS when attached to tripod and I am using a shotgun mike to isolate sound, the camera is set to face recognition tracking
Great video Grant! My wife and I started our own local tv show. We have been filming with our iPhones 6s & 7 ... I want better stills and video quality, especially in darker settings!! I think I would spend the extra 200. for the ability to listen to the audio. Great share !! We subscribed too! Steve
@0:57 The Canon 70d can indeed shoot 60fps (@720p) ...unless you were trying to say the 80d can shoot 60fps at 1080p You gotta add an annotation or something so newcomer's don't get misinformed!
Nice little overview. I have to say I about charged one of these to my credit card when I first saw it announced, but now that impulse has passed (thank God). Would be nice to shoot full hd at 60fps but not THAT nice. Wish Canon would FINALLY come out with the consumer level 4k camera I've been wishing they'd get around to. They'll likely do it the week after I break down and buy one of these. And some gorgeous time lapse there.
I am definitely going to buy one of these camera. I'm just stuck with if its worth the additional $200. I will use the camera for vlogging and sit downs. Is the auto focus that much better? I don't think I really need the head phone jack. I want nice film for sure, but if auto focus is pretty similar than I will just buy a 70d and save $200. Please help!
Don't get the 70d... it's a faulty camera that WILL die on you for no reason at all. Search Canon 70D Err 70 or Err 80. I'm soo pissed at canon for selling people a faulty camera!
geat video thanks! i see that on the 70d you can go 60fps in hd... you just gotta switch to ntsc... in pal it's up to 50fps... please correct me of I'm wrong but isn't that the whole deal with PAL and ntsc?
Thankyou very much. im deciding if its worth it to get a 70D or 80D. the price gap in my country is around $250 (converted). Ill keep your information in mind.
Grant! Great video. One query. Sometimes I want to shoot video in aperture or shutter speed priority mode. But when I place the control dial in those modes - i CANNOT adjust neither speed or aperture. For example in shutter speed mode the camera will shoot at 1/100 if I'm shooting 60p; and 1/60 if I do 30p. I cannot override it. Is this deliberate on canon's part.
I have a Canon C100 mk2 and a 70D and I would like to get the 80D mostly because doing timelapses is now easier with the built in intervalometer. I understand that this means that the resolution will be "just" 1080p- and not the almost 4k u get when shooting photos but the simplicity of the video timelapse is what I need...now question...with photos, one can set the shutter to be very slow-i tried a night timelapse with the 70D and I set the shutter to 3 secs! and the interval to 4 secs and I got awesome trailing traffic lights etc..but with the 80D using the video timelapse function, what the slowest shutter I can do? also very slow to get lots of blurrring and trailing lights and stars? the sample video I saw here has little to no motion blur and to me most timelapses look better with some blur.. I hate the look of the Gopro Hero 3! high shutter values etc...can anyone confirm what the slowest shutter I can set with th 80D when doing video timelapses...? thanks for the review...!
+Erick Perdomo Hi - yes in manual and in the timelapse mode you can set shutter etc to whatever you want and then it compiles a ALL-I .mov video in camera. I haven't tried the light trails timelapse yet but you should be able to achieve what you are asking. Cheers
Hi Grant! Nice video :) Just a question, I going to buy a new camera (with a lens) soon, but I hesitate a lot between the 70d and the 80d because there is a big promotion on the 70d. The 70d cost 850€ and the 80d 1520€ (still with a lens), so do you think that the updates of the 80d worth the price? Thanks!
I really like both of these cameras, but I can't believe they only have one memory card slot. Having two memory cards in my current camera has saved my bacon a couple of times. One card corrupted, but the other card did not. Probably will be a deal breaker for me.

+Carl S. Yes would be great to have 4K ability and a higher frame rate for slow motion but it is a pretty solid camera.
great review. thanks!
New-Zealand?
Very informative. Thank you.
Great Video. I won't upgrade my 70d just yet - thanks for your advice.
+Martin Hommel glad it was useful
Thanks!
which camera is better for vlogs and for youtubing ?
-Xaris- Same question!!

+Locust&WildHoney I've not noticed any difference with autofocus on 80d shooting video.
What lens are you using with the 70d and 80d?
In this video it was the kit lens 18-135 and Canon 17-55 lenses.
Don't get the 70d... it's a faulty camera that WILL die on you for no reason at all. Search Canon 70D Err 70 or Err 80. I'm soo pissed at canon for selling people a faulty camera!
I've never had a problem with mine and its had a fair workout! Can you get a warranty on yours?
geat video thanks!

you just gotta switch to ntsc...
in pal it's up to 50fps...
please correct me of I'm wrong but isn't that the whole deal with PAL and ntsc?
do you feel the diference in AF to be significant between the 2 cameras ?
+Tony Caw No I can't say I have noticed any difference to be honest.
Thankyou very much. im deciding if its worth it to get a 70D or 80D. the price gap in my country is around $250 (converted). Ill keep your information in mind.
What lenses did you use???
I think the 80D looks less detailed then the 70D. Shouldn't it be better?
Thank you, you really know your stuff! :)
Awesome vid, thank you ; )
Does the PowerZoom adapter work on the Canon 70D model?
Grant! Great video. One query. Sometimes I want to shoot video in aperture or shutter speed priority mode. Is the new autofocus much better? didn´t they relese new a new lens whit improwed AF aswell? thanks for a good review
Haven't really noticed any difference between the two to be honest.
Hey,Grant! what lense did you use on the Canon 70d and 80d camera ?
+Old Shadae I have a few lenses but probably use the kit Canon 18-135mm lens for general purpose shooting the most.
will the canon 80d work with the ninja blade 2

+Grant Johnston great! I may have to sell my 70D then! thanks
Hi Grant! Nice video :)

I would probably go with the 70D unless you specifically want the 60fps recording.
+Grant Johnston Ok, thanks for your advices!
I got used 70D with 2 lenses for $650 and it's great!
Damn, that deal would make up my mind between the two cameras.
Just a quick question... Would you recommend the 80D over the 70D for Football Videos??? Cheers!
Yes I probably with as it will allow you to use 50 or 60fps recording for slo-mo if required. Cheers
hi grant- what lens did you use to shoot this video (and was it shot on the 70d ?) thanks!
Me talking to the camera was shot on my wee Sony Rx100 iv
oh wow, okay thanks!
What's your favorite lens for 70 d
+Sttonyda Munsta It depends what you are shooting, probably would be a toss up between the the kit 18-135 and the canon 17-55 f2.8.
70d or 80d to film skateboarding?
80D gives you options of higher frame rate
I really like both of these cameras, but I can't believe they only have one memory card slot. Having two memory cards in my current camera has saved my bacon a couple of times. One card corrupted, but the other card did not. Probably will be a deal breaker for me.
top man
Having the ear phone jack alone is worth the $200. Decisions Decisions
+James Wilson Yup I reckon
wow! No comments?
I wish i win
Earphone jack and 50/60fps ability is worth $200 difference.
