I didn’t even know Leopard opal was a thing! Colonel still give me those free exciting lessons on opal! 💪👍 Also I’m still too much of a green horn to ask a decent question 🤣
People sell “water opal,” but there are many types of opal called that. The Ethiopian opal that fits is Shewa Province opal, which may be very beautiful, but when it dries, it usually cracks, sometimes a lot. I am working on a new “easy” method to stabilize this type of opal, but for now, you can use the method in this video (the description explains it all): ruclips.net/video/E4HcLJgBolc/видео.html
Back in the 1990s I purchased a Louisiana opal. It looked like what I now know as pin fire opal but with tan matrix. It is very light weight. I wore it to dinner that night and was pretty happy with it until I splashed water on it. The color turned tan, the color of the matrix. I thought that I had been ripped off by the jeweler in Aspen Colorado. I put it back in its box and deposited it in my purse. When I took it out the next morning the beautiful colors were back. I’ve tried going to the library to get info on Louisiana opal, and found nothing. Through the years I’ve shown it to many gem show opal sellers, a showed them what happens if you get water on it. They all were surprised and even more so when I told them that overnight the pin fire would be back. I goggled it on often. The only thing I found was that someone had found Louisiana opal and knew very little about it. All they said was that it was a water opal and to see the fire was to keep it in water. This is the opposite experience than I have had. Oh great Papa Doc, If you have any wisdom about them that you could or would share with me I would appreciate it. Thanks for sharing your experiences with opals, love your channel. Also love you kitties.
Just found your channel enjoy the humor 😂 with the knowledge of opal. Enjoy faceting gems have a few opals rough. Was wanting to try to cab them. Haven’t done any cab work, my ? The opals have been sitting in a jar of water for many many years. Should I pull the opal I want to cut out. And let it sit for a while to dry a bit before cutting it with water. Or is it ok to go ahead pull it out of the water, and cut it with water right away. Thanks for your time.
Hey General Pulitzer. I hope all is well. From Patrick McGovern a person you've taught so much too about many things. I will be starting my Flint knapping episode of my life as I turn 40 in October & by the time im 41 I want succeed in making my first arrow head. 😊. P.S. people... Don't be a flintknaper. 😂 Old-school Pulitzer watcher's will get this joke. 😅 Take care and thanks again Pulitzer. Your truly a pioneer of YT teaching to people who love cool hobbies & information gatherer's.
Nice to hear from you, Patrick. Don’t intend to be a “FOG” knapper or a “big rock” knapper? Look up “FOG” (flake-over-grinding). Let me know if you need anything.
I have a question for you (cough, cough) Papa Doc... What exactly is an Opal? Is it Igneous, Sedimentary, Mineral (or perhaps even Mineraloid)? I've always been a bit confused on that one and hear many thoughts regarding such.
I love your Opal arrowheads! I have made quite a few out of obsidian and would like to try my hand at an opal one, but find myself a bit gun shy. I have a nice piece of Australian blue opal I was considering. Was curious if you have ever made an arrowhead out of the blue opal and if all solid opal/potch knapps the same. Thanks for the channel, always a pleasure to watch.
I don’t know why your videos don’t show up on my feed but always glad when they do. Was wondering if you could cut a trillion or triangle cut opal? Thanks for the videos!!!
Question: when working with opal that is thick and cloudy but mild color is it worth continuing to remove weight to try and get the cloudy to clear up or will it most likely be through the whole stone? its also boulder opal against black iron stone
Man I've never worked with such a chunky Australian opal. That arrowhead is truly incredible. That leopard opal is beautiful too, never even heard of that. I have been inspired by you so i recently got my first cabbing machine. Been practicing on many Ethiopian opal and random stones ive been collecting. Your videos are the best on RUclips. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thank you for all the knowledge and no homework! I really love your channel. I was telling my friends about it, as it includes all my favorite things: a dry and ridiculous sense of humor, cats, and opal cutting! Have you ever accidentally cut your thumbs while cutting through opal? It looks scary 😳😱😲
You are too kind! I have never accidentally cut myself with the saw or with anything else - oops! I get cut often with flint, but not while making videos.
I enjoy your videos, and I love the kitty cats, but most of all your workmanship and the way you cut your opals every time you have a giveaway I try to put my name in, but sometimes I don’t always get in here early enough, but keep up the good work, my friend and one day my name will get picked for one of your beautiful pieces❤❤❤
I've never heard of or seen leopard opal before. It may not be as flashy as regular opal, but it's still gorgeous. What is your absolute favorite kind of opal to work with? Could have been Doc Opal :P lol
My LEAST favorite is Australian Boulder opal That ironstone - turns everything red-brown and will ruin clothes and is a mess to clean up. My personal favorite is Andamooka matrix opal, because you never know what you’ll reveal.
Another fantastic video as always! Brazilian opal is quite familiar here at An Atom of Earth! I have a 35-carat Brazilian opal set in an octopus design, complete with black opal eyes. P.S. If I don't win, I'll settle for some chips I kindly requested years ago. 😉
A question huh? I think my primary question is "when am I going to get lucky and win one of these beauties??"!!! LOL absolutely everything you showed on the video would have a happy home with us. An arrowhead would become a stunning necklace for me!! Thank you Colonel! As always it's fun to watch your videos, especially your Paw Paw Squad!!! Congratulations on the new title Paw Paw Doc!!! That came from our eldest granddaughter for my hubby. His name is Roman, Papa Ro is what the grandkids call him. Niyah made kindergarten art for him and wrote Paw Paw Row! 🥰🥰🥰.
Opals are my absolute favorite stone! My husband cut me my very first Opal, it is an Ethiopian Wello Opal. My question is, have you ever cut Andamooka Opal? We have some that is untouched and aren’t sure what to do with it so its beauty has been uncut for now. We love the channel and hope you and all the fur babies have a wonderful day! 😊
Congratulations on becoming a grandad I’m also going to be a grandad in a months time I haven’t thought about what I want to be called now that’s given me something important to think about 🤦🏻♂️
Love all the different type of interesting facts here. Best opal channel out there by far. Thank you for it. Fascinated with Brazilian opal . I need to get some. Will check out the link for it. Here is the question how many different types of Brazilian opal are there?
Beautiful....not Sheila either...well..maybe...but I like anything Australian opal...Coober Pedy, Andamooka....and Oh that Lightning Ridge...❤❤...Wow...those arrowheads are spectacular!!
If the boulder rusts, then whatever you make will deteriorate! Perhaps just drop the whole thing in HCl and let the opal separate from the rock... i have boulder opal that's just opal so it's not unheard of
Riley Gunn told me how to animate Sheila. It’s somewhat fun, but you have to know how to program the API to get it perfect. I could not get her to say “g’day” properly.
😮❤😮❤ My question is.... Why my opal always goes clear then milky???? I would love piece of beautiful rough or would definitely LOVE to own one of the opals in the beginning!!!! That pyrite dollar was cool and the leopard opal!! The final stones wow!!!!❤❤
My Question is... Is it possible to stop a Opal Addiction 😅😊❤💙💚💛😊 because I think I have it from only looking your Videos 😂. So I NEED TO win one.... Even with a little Color😮😊
Papa Doc is a hoot! I’m Gaga to my grandkids. And I love it. What locations of opals have you visited? Austrailia? Mexico? Ethiopia? Louisiana? Thanks for another fun one! Speaking of nicknames, our son’s is Huck. Given to him by my dad when he was a baby. Said he was his Huckleberry Finn. All the best. Stay cool.
Well I guess I should have watched the video all the way through first before commenting ? But here's my question is Brazilian opal hydrophane like Ethiopian opal ? Or what ?
Opal education and cat videos. I don’t think I could ever get sick of watching Pulitzer opal videos. Two questions: 1. After all these years of working with opal, what is your absolute favourite and least favourite types of opal to work with? And 2. Ehhhhh….What’s up Doc? 😏
I’m having trouble gathering information on hydroplane and non hydroplane Opal. There seems to be lots of contradictory information out on sales posts, and forums. It seems much of the contradictory claims are coming from those dedicated to one specific camp, or another. I’m just trying to be an informed lover of ALL opals 😅😂 I claim no allegiance to any one producer of Opal. I would sure appreciate a better understanding of these key differences, how to identify hydrophane vs non hydrophane Ethiopian opals. Do non hydrophane welo opals exist? Do hydrophane Australian opals exist? Mexican? Brazilian? Why do the “cutting grade” welo opals always seem to be stored dry…? Are cutting grade welos just stabilized, or are they non-hydrophane? Sheila helped me formulate this hodge-podge question, so my apologies for it being so plastic-brained. 🙃
👋 So my opal give-away question to you is a 2-parter: 1. what is your favorite single opal you've ever cut (and polished) or held in hand? 2. what is your favorite kind (or specie?) of opal in general and why? Mr. Zhivago is an astonishing looking opal. Also, what's "3 squares and a cot" because I Googled it and came up with no meaningful results. But I'm assuming it means 3 meals and a bed?
Cats AND opals. Perfection. The best channel ever. I've learned so much about opals thanks to you. Thank you so much. I truly appreciate all the education and no homework. Leopard opal looks pretty, but I'm so salty about the name "leopard opal". Why not call it jaguar opal? Jaguars also have spots and they actually live in Mexico.
Q: "Don, are you purposefully trying to distract me from watching you cut opal?" Also: "why did you put Riley Gunn's face up when referencing Papa Doc?" Enquiring minds want to know. Thanks, Sir, for the great content and some knowledge as well as humor. Thanks, and wonderful results. Gratz to all the winners and good luck this time!
First of all, why haven't I ever read the video description before? I about died laughing seeing ChatGPT's summary! I always love seeing the adorable fluff brigade along with learning something new about opal. I also love the pyrite sand dollars - I just think it's such fun to find a different formation from a stone you thought you knew. This may be sacrilege because opal is king, but are there other stones you enjoy cutting? Or do you switch to non-precious opal from time to time?
Do you keep and use the little shards that come off?? I make opal and resin jewelry, and keep all the "dust" etc. Mixing it with resin with a black background makes it look like the galaxy! The black makes the color pop! Also...thank you for the education! I love your videos! (And the kitties).
That first big beautiful cabochon was turned into a tiny, tiny arrowhead and a pile of dust. Such a waste! Ok, I barely paid attention as I was watching Touchy chase the string. So sue me! As always, great video. Ok, maybe not always. LOL!
I never heard of leopard opal before. It's nice, but... I still prefer shard's sharp beauty! =)) How do you feel as Papa Doc though? Baby boy probably wants your full attention, just as your kitties and opals? :)
I'm pretty much new to learning about opals, but was smart enough to subscribe to your channel for some entertaining education on the subject! Thanks for that! 😊 There is a particular type of opal that I'm fascinated by, and am hoping you will be a font of knowledge about it. I don't even know what it's called, but I am entranced by the beautiful, almost lace-like pattern within it. I have seen examples that have wood within as well. The colors are stunning, along with the patterns. So you have any clue from my poor description of what precisely I'm lusting after? Any knowledge you can impart would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time and consideration to my question. ✨
My sister picked her grandma name (Lula) because being a Southern grandma, she didn't want the typical granny names. You could do like my son did for my mom, and just let your grandson pick it himself. Mom was honored the first grandchild named her Memaw, because she had no idea what to call herself, either. In my case, I'd just be happy to have a grandchild, but I have two grandcats and two granddogs who absolutely love me, and I'm just as happy to spoil. ❤
Haha, Papa Doc! My kids are threatening to call me Pee Paw when/if they have children. I now understand why old people are obsessed with talking about wills and inheritances. Revenge against their ungrateful progeny! … Wow, You think Riley realizes that he bears an uncanny resemblance to a dead Haitian dictator? :)
Another great video! I have an opal question. Is Brazilian opal volcanic like the Ethiopian and Mexican varieties? Or is it sedimentary and fossil like the Australian kind?
I didn't know of any other opals apart from the Ethiopian and Australian opals. Now there's a Brazilian opal!🤯 What other countries are hiding opals from me? As per usual, love your work. Thank you for introducing me to two new opals.
Wow, your videos are so funny and instructinal at the same time. I have an Opal question: I got a really big mexican fire opal embedded in sandstone (about 20x30x20 cm). It shows all colors from Blue to yellow and red with a wonderful play of color. As it is is a rough opal it has many crevasses where dust has piled up over the years of storage. How can I get rid of the dust in an effective way without harming the opal?
So cool those opal types. I happen to have a few small leopard opals, so sparkly, very happy for it. Would be happy to get educated about all types of opal :-) My question is; from your experience cutting so many different opals, which are the easiest vs hardest ones, or if its more fun, which are most different (from each others) to cut? Looking forwards to the Q/A ❤️
Oh i missed this last night! Busy studying 🙈 I love the iridescence of opals with their play of color but im intrigued as to why other forms of opal do not? Im assuming the common material is silica but why would one have a play of color & another not? Genuine question & not wanting to be in the competition. Thank you for yet another informative & amusing video Mr P or should we now call you Papa Doc? Lol Gorgeous grandchild btw!
Good vid. Do you know of any opal from Canada? I know that there is ammonite in Alberta, and I think labradorite from Labrador displays iridescence, but are they opal?
Papa Doc, thanks so much for educating us about opal while simultaneously entertaining us with kitties. I’d never heard of leopard opal before, nor had I ever seen Brazilian boulder opal. And I had just been reading about hyalite opal today, another form of opal that I’d previously been oblivious to. Here’s my question(s): How many types of opal are out there? Given how different some types are from one another, why are they all called opal? Where do you draw the line between “opal” and other pretty opalescent stones?
Love your channel! Would love a return subscription - Y’all unwind with me by watching clouds geaux by or Eagles on their nests! Hear stories about my adventures in life and help support LSU and the SPTV Foundation & Community!
I knew it was going to be an arrow head, you just can’t help yourself, but I will say you’re very good at it!!!! I think Husky might be a good name for it! I think that scratch on your hand looked suspiciously like arrowhead making wounds!
I can't believe I missed the video with Poppy! That is one of the flashiest opals I've ever seen! Congratulations, winners. With the Leopard opal, can you file down the spots of black on the wheel, or does it go all the way through.? As always im super impressed with the kitty videos 📹 😍
OOh nice opal Sheila ❤ Looking good too for a plastic head. My Siamese cat Harkin will be twelve tomorrow. . Shame about the crack in the arrow head but it turned out nice. Nice to see so many different types of opal, including some really nice Honduran opal and a bit from the Czech Republic.
A new Pulitzer Opal video is the best thing to start the weekend off with! I didn't even know leopard opal existed! I don't recall if you've done a video on Brazilian boulder opal yet, but I'm wondering: how similar it is to australian boulder opal? I've seen some folks online say it's pretty comparable to it's australian counterpart in terms of durability and the way you can cab it. Always looking to learn more about opal!
Is the hardness of the leopard opal, greater than other matrix type of opal? Roy sent a sample in a bag of goodies that he put together for me and I'd really like to start on that piece for some reason. I just like the specks. Reminds me of stars on a dark night, I guess. Congratulations to the winners of the give away. 😊. You must have incredible strength in your hands to do those arrow heads, with the skill to go along with it! I've fallen in love with those objects. I enjoy watching the flaking process and seeing a beautiful blade emerging. 😊. Thank you for the video.
I have a genuine question. What brand is your multi-wheel grinder? I was looking at one from Diamond Pacific, but I ain't made of money and theirs ain't cheap.
How about changing one letter and make it ‘popa doc’? That way you would be officially popa doc, but probably most just called popa. Our grandson sounds so cute saying popa popa.
I do love the leopard opal, but I love all the opals so you probably said it many times before in the past, but you said ask a question about opals -- what is your favorite opal? 😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
Why did you choose to cut the cobber pedy opal perpendicular to the color bars, instead of trying to expose a face of one of the color bars? Were the bars too thin? Do you know of any ways to stabilize/treat crazing/cracked Ethiopian opal?
Hi. I have some Ethiopian opal cabs that still have sand on.the surface. I don't have any lapidary equipment but I have a rotary tool. Should.I try to remove the sand with that, or wet rub them with regular sandpaper?
5:18 - Not sure about that! Last year, I found a couple cracked open pieces of basalt here in germany with something that at least strongly resembles these pyrite suns. I was already suspecting that it's pyrite and after watching this part about the pyrite suns and doing a bit more research on them, I'm about 90 % that's what I found. They are tiny, though (less than half an inch in diameter) and seem to be quite superficial.
The Catholic Church said the Fire Opal in Mexico was from the Devil is what I read for why there was not much artisanal mining. We have found boulder opal like precious opal in rhyolite & precious bog agate also in Nevada. Even ash balls have been found with color bars. Our wolo like stable opal has been small so far.
Love your videos mate, getting into opal polishing myself right now, are there any tips/tricks you wish you knew earlier? Maybe about how to use/care for your equipment, common beginner mistakes and stuff like that :)
Dang that was some beautiful Boulder Opal!!! How did you learn to make arrowheads? I think it is awesome that Opal is able to be turned into arrowheads. Are there any other precious stones you wish you could chip into arrowheads?
I'm new to watching your chanel. I really enjoy your videos. They're hilarious. How do you make opals into arrowheads. Your videos are fast forwarded and hard to watch. I know it's knapping I think is what it's called but what tools and stuff would a person need to do this and did you practice on potch? This is Henry from East Tennessee
I thank you now not later. One of the best Opal Channels. Pulitzer and Black Opal Direct with Justin!!!!!!! 🎉❤💙💚💛
Please tell me how you hold on to opal for so long? Papa Doc?
I just put it away and forgot about it. I don’t really forget about it - I know about what and where opals are. Lots in safety deposit box.
Can you use or me car wax on opal? I was thinking something like the ceramic coding "H10".
I think there's Only Two opal channels 😁
I want to buy opal rough
If you can. Please give me number opal saller company
I wish I could think of a question… merely admiring your skills :-)
His videos do leave us at a loss for words, except things like "beautiful" "stunning" "oh I would love to adopt that" and "gorgeous Happy kitties" LOL
Thank you! 😃

great work papa doc ha ha
I didn’t even know Leopard opal was a thing! Colonel still give me those free exciting lessons on opal! 💪👍 Also I’m still too much of a green horn to ask a decent question 🤣
You can ask ANY question. Does not have to be about opal
"I hope you liked this video & if not how stupid were you to watch this long" ..... I came for opals but got pearls of wisdom.
Your craftsmanship on that arrowhead is spectacular!😍
It’s not that difficult, really.

Funny, right when I was thinking, "I wonder which cat gave you that hand tattoo...' you pan the camera to it and say "souki" 😆

The leopard opal is so amazing. I would love to see it in my house. So She get’s to meet my cats
Thank you for my opal education Papa Doc. Love watching the antics of the ginger army, makes me miss my own ginger ninja 💜

Me, too! Thank goodness that the stone was so thick. I didn’t show much of the actual cutting. As I got deeper, it seemed to blossom.
Love this channel! Is Sheila ever going to earn her keep? Doesn't seem Like a go getter. Ha ha
Behind the scenes she's running the show!! 😊
He’s right! Sheila is the boss
What’s a leopard’s favorite TV show? “Spotting” with the Stars! ----- Keep up the good work.

That leopard opal is amazing. I’ve never seen that before. Thank you for sharing.
One of the authors about the only article about leopard opal owns the land where it is found. It’s crazy.
Could you have made several slices of the arrowhead opal and made a bracelet?
Could have, but I have more.

Stay cool.
Hello Colonel Papa Doc! I think we should petition Baskin Robbins to rename "rainbow sherbet" to "opal sherbet." What do you think?
Well I guess I should have watched the video all the way through first before commenting ? But here's my question is Brazilian opal hydrophane like Ethiopian opal ? Or what ?
Opal education and cat videos. I don’t think I could ever get sick of watching Pulitzer opal videos. Two questions:
1. After all these years of working with opal, what is your absolute favourite and least favourite types of opal to work with?
And 2. Ehhhhh….What’s up Doc? 😏
How many types of opal are there?
Too many to list! Watch my videos, including the Q&A one - NO - the Opal Quiz!
Do you recommend and could you tell us about the white pencil you used ????? ✏ I carve rocks and I'm always searching for better tools.
I’m having trouble gathering information on hydroplane and non hydroplane Opal. There seems to be lots of contradictory information out on sales posts, and forums. It seems much of the contradictory claims are coming from those dedicated to one specific camp, or another. I’m just trying to be an informed lover of ALL opals 😅😂
I claim no allegiance to any one producer of Opal. 🙃
👋
So my opal give-away question to you is a 2-parter: 1. what is your favorite single opal you've ever cut (and polished) or held in hand? 2. what is your favorite kind (or specie?) of opal in general and why?
Q: "Don, are you purposefully trying to distract me from watching you cut opal?" Also: "why did you put Riley Gunn's face up when referencing Papa Doc?"
Enquiring minds want to know.
There is a particular type of opal that I'm fascinated by, and am hoping you will be a font of knowledge about it.
Now there's a Brazilian opal!🤯
What other countries are hiding opals from me?
Looking forwards to the Q/A ❤️
I'm so glad you showcased Brazilian opal! It's my favorite type of opal and I can't get enough of it ❤ What is your favorite kind of opal?
Oh i missed this last night!
Busy studying 🙈
I love the iridescence of opals with their play of color but im intrigued as to why other forms of opal do not?
Im assuming the common material is silica but why would one have a play of color & another not?
Genuine question & not wanting to be in the competition.
Thank you for yet another informative & amusing video Mr P or should we now call you Papa Doc? Lol
Gorgeous grandchild btw!
I subscribed! Fellow Louisiana native. LSU (med school) grad. here

I knew it was going to be an arrow head, you just can’t help yourself, but I will say you’re very good at it!!!! I think Husky might be a good name for it! I think that scratch on your hand looked suspiciously like arrowhead making wounds!
Was the Brazilian boulder opal easier, more difficult or about the same to work as Australian boulder opal? Thank you for sharing!
I’m so lucky Opal is my birthstone! I especially adore carved opal. What would you carve an opal into? Or carve into an opal?
