  • This particular Wyoming Nobby from Lightning Ridge is showing a lot of potential.
    The color looks vibrant and the color bar seems to be a decent size - but you never know what is lurking below the white cap.

    I have a double sided cut and polished green broad-flash Coober Pedy white opal cabochon somewhere in my carpet that I dropped when we moved in a month ago, I keep checking the vacuum to make sure I don't throw it away by accident.😂

    This opal still turned out beautifully in the end. If I hadn’t seen what it “could’ve been” I would have never know it was supposed to be larger. Kinda a good metaphor for life; you don’t see the struggles, just the finished product.

    The pink, purple, green and red, with flashes of yellow and orange is fairly unique. I am very impressed you got 1.75ct out of that. When I looked at the rough knobby I thought the bar was thin and too close to the top. My hope was 1.5ct and you beat it. Good on you.
    As for the pattern, I saw pin fire at the top and center. Then there seemed to be floral around the outside. Nice 3D effect as well.

    is there a "golden rule" about how much backing/too much backing should be left behind the color of the stone? I saw a saw a beautiful stone where the backing was so thick that the weight made it maybe 2x as expensive as "I thought" is should be. Thanks for the time you take to make these videos!

    • @DaftFader
      @DaftFader Год назад

      Justin is pretty good with taking a lot of the backing off, not everyone is tho because they can claim the opal is heavier than it really should be. If the back seems way too thick for the size, it probably is. 😉
      It really depends opal to opal tho, as some have really thick, deep running colour, where as others just have a slither. If it's like 1cm wide 2 cm long and 1cm thick, but the colour is running 4-6mm thick, that's respectable, however if the colour was a real thin layer, that'd useually be way too thick, I'm no expert tho, just going from what I've observed over the years.
