- Another rollercoaster ride! In gemstone terms this means riding the color train or derailing it.
Justin takes on a rough opal piece that has seemly high potential - more than many others he has cut in the past. The Nobby opal piece comes from Lightning Ridge and is what every opal hunter is searching for.
Tune in and see if the opal cuts a $100 gem or a $10,000 gem. Enjoy the journey into this 110 million year old piece of opal and watch as it transforms before your very eyes.

Wasn’t a fan of the music in the first half of the video. The anxiety in Justin’s voice is all the drama I need.
The second half is even worse.. no need for crying female singer..
While it is stressful for you Justin, I find it exciting and also therapeutic. Watching a Master doing magic to a rock is amazing!
Not keen on the music distracted from your session but loved watching the cutting - very exciting as alwsys
I normally like your videos but the music on this one, particularly the "suspense" music, made it hard to watch for me.
Please skip THE music!!
This is my favorite time to watch a good video. Perfect time slot here. My personal taste-no music.
I agree, no music. ASMR
I like the music, but not when he is talking :(
🇬🇧 Can't stand music on any otherwise interesting videos. Totally spoils it for me.
No music
@@bigjake4421 ASMR
Watching you cut opal is like eating cashews; it's a bit addictive.
Thanks for your efforts and I love your work!
I think it's more like scoffing an entire can of giant macadaemia - yep yep yep! Mmmmmm so yummy these gems!
Cashews are not my jam personally. I’m almond fan.
Get rid of the soundtrack, it just distracts and makes it harder to hear you.
Love your videos but not a fan of the music
Why drown Justin out with music? Not a fan. Lovely stone!
me too... had to mute it during the music :( Justin’s voice and the whir of the machines were really relaxing.
@@marionlesage4794 I also mute the video during the music
Music, NO. Our Opal Jedi being able to be heard and the fascinating sounds of a gorgeous gem emerging from rough as we've heard it all along, YES!
Hell yes plus in the beginning I was like what's up with the intense music and sounds? I mean cutting opal is intense enough. Don't amplify it 😂 but I love the sounds of the creating myself. It's what reminds us of the delicate, difficult, and creativity processes. That it takes in order to bring out the beauty that this world has too offer. It's also a skill factor. Please listen to me and this guy😃 we love your explanations, how you speak of the excitement as well as the downs bcuz we empathize with you. Keep it clean and keep it you Justin. Cheers
Even though it sounded like a pretty song. I hate FN auto tune with a passion. 😂 It baffles me that people make millions of dollars altering there voice and taking credit for it. And you Justin can hit a brick wall with some of the most skillful/ life giving work in the world. Once again.....please,keep it you 😃 we love you Justin.
Yeah could totally improve this by deleting the music. Nice stone and great skill bringing it out.
I’m good with either but I will say the sound of the wheels gives so much intensity…. Drama… suspense
I agree!
Love the new time slot... Beautiful gem Justin, especially after sand-gate!
A bit of constructive criticism: the music needs to be dialled back a little bit though. I did like it, but too loud for my taste and did drown Justin out a couple of times. You'll get it though Tameeka 😉💟🇦🇺 good job kiddo xx
Agree about the music! The dramatic drums, tweener vocals etc. are disruptive. I had turn off the sound to concentrate on what was happening and dial up if Justin was talking. Please, please dial down the music so we can pay attention to the actual video content.
I disagree. The music is barely noticable. I think the crescendo was just in time. And added to the suspense.
Wow the editing of these videos really take you for an emotional ride. The music choice and transitions are spot on. It effortlessly puts you in Justin's shoes and what he is feeling at that moment
I agree! I love the music. I think it really adds to the suspense.
Whoever puts your videos together with the close-ups and the tunes does a truly great job. Most enjoyable relaxing, thrilling channel on RUclips
I watch all your videos, you're very informative and enthusiastic. Not a fan of the music in this particular video.
The flash on this stone is pretty insane, especially the blue/purple flash.
really not crazy about the added music had to turn off the sound, still an exciting video with out the sound.
All so true. It made me want to cut myself then poke a strangers eye out lol..... but the show itself is very interesting to me and l try watching every episode
Right. The added music just detracts from the videos. I've seen this happen so many times with content creators. It's like they think they need to spice their videos up for some reason. When they don't! This one is a prime example.
@@ceruleanc505 Time Team did the same thing in the last two seasons. Loud, tediously twiddly repetitive notes.
Yup it cheapens the video, we dont need dramatic music, the cutting is interesting enough
I like the music. That's the beauty of the volume buttons, those that like it have it, and those that don't can turn off the sound. Best of both worlds!
Whats with the racket/noise in the background? Cant hear a word you are saying... music BLEH lol
The music spoils the video...
Please please no music. I enjoy relaxing and watching your amazing work. No need to over dramatize with music, it's already exciting enough. Another great gem, awesome work👍
I agree!
I like the music. Everyone has different tastes, and volume buttons make it so everyone can have what they like.
I love this channel...but what the heck does a song about "staying the night" have anything to do with cutting gemstones? "Would you stay through the night" has some pretty overt sexual overtones...doesn't match this channel community at all
I was enjoying the video, until the annoying music blasted near the end. Then I closed the video.
It's a lovely stone, and I certainly enjoyed you bringing to life. Watching helped cheer what is otherwise a not so great mental health day for me today. Thanks for the timely post xx
Music was bit to loud for me. I enjoy sounds of grinding more
I, too, had to turn the sound off at the beginning. I really like your channel and have been subscribed for a long time. But, like many a rock band whose second album is less than the first, please be careful of over-production with unneeded text, catchphrases, music, and dramatics. I feel that your unparalleled craft and skill in turning rough rocks into beautiful gemstones, as you did in this video, speaks for itself.
What a stupid comment 😁
I like to watch you expose that beautiful colour mate, just don't like the cheesy melodramatic music and the heavy sighs every few minutes. That is a lovely gem. Wish I had it in my collection.
Pretty stone. Horrible music.
What do expect "AC⚡DC" or maybe "Jacques Pierce Bordeaux" ( yes that is a song title) given your "Canuck" name??? 🤔😁.
I thought the singer had a beautiful voice.
@@66hobgoblin81 If they have a beautiful voice, then why the auto-tune?
@@ArchFundy. Only a bit of it.
Are you Canadian? It's the Canuck that makes me curious.
@@66hobgoblin81 Yes, I'm an old Canadian. I live on an island in the Bay of Fundy. I grew up in an age of incredible harmonies and find much of the modern "music" offensive to the ears.
I'm so glad it worked out for you, that's gorgeous and finally one out of a knobby! Have a good one!
Still my favorite gem ever was that script pattern, even with the hole in it, that was the most beautiful piece ever
Yep she was a stunner
Yes, I loved it
Agree
How much of the stone is 'allowed' to be the back? I mean it would weigh more if you didn't take anything off, but obviously that would be cheating!
Just look at his finished stones and probably add a few percent to it lol
Can't hear you through the music 😭😭 still so much 💜 for you and the channel. I commend you for trying something new, just needs toned way down so we can hear you please 😁.
Excellent session, except for the music with vocalist. Had to turn off the sound. The music of the wheels is your perfect accompaniment.
Oh what a treat to wake up to! This one is beautiful to me. I really love the videos that show you taking the stone from beginning to the end Justin. Thank you for bringing such joy to me.
That got the blood flowing! Nice stone I like the music just keep the volume down a little but nicely done!👍
Don't it suck? Love everything with you. I'll trade you. Give me a chance
Everyone loves those relaxing videos and listening to you. That stressful tention music is really annoying and kills the whole vibe of the channel
Thank you
I agree. This is not the Bob-Ross-type relaxing video we signed up for
Must agree, it’s better to hear you and what you do instead of someone’s particular taste in music, Still great as always tho
I though I was going to be the only one that skipped ahead to pass the music up. Another gem in the books. Looks amazing!!!
I feel if you’re watching for free you shouldn’t gripe about the music in the free video
I was disappointed when you had to give up on that big, vibrant, yellow flake due to sand. Still the stone has a very good color to it. I especially like how the blue flashes to purple when you turn it just the right way.
The sounds are usually relaxing. The music destroys that effect.
What a beautiful piece of work Justin. That is absolutely beautiful. Guess I’m going to have to buy some more of your stuff oops that was my wife just pinched me and said quit and I said OK. Anyway I can’t wait for you to see what I got my wife Catherine made with two pieces of opal from you and I appreciate it and she loved them thank you Justin
I think the music is a distraction. Prefer just listening to the machines and you.
That was a great bonus video. Again you had me on the edge of my seat Justin, but as always your masterful skill came and save the day and wowsers look at the gem you cut. Just amazing, brilliant vibrant colour!. Makes me so proud to be Australian making gems like this. Thank you Black Opal Direct, this was a wonderful surprise, great video, really entertaining, could have had a Justin dance at the end but cant have it all hey? Until Tuesday...... BOD the best!
Thank you for the sweet words top cat 🙏
Always enjoy your vids Justin. Keep up the great work!
Yes I did enjoy this video. I know it can be disappointing when your opal does not cut the way you were hoping but I believe it’s still a winner. We learn so much from you and your videos so that’s a winner in my book... it might not pay for the chicken dinner but still a winner nonetheless.
My daughter said to me mom is he famous and and I asked why... she said you are always watching his videos. I told her yes he is famous in my book.❤️ then she told me I was weird lol
I just came real quick to hear you say potch
Always enjoy your work. The commentary is informative & entertaining. Watching the grind is mesmerizing & relaxing. I am thrilled & disappointed w/you.
One comment on the music. 1st time I noticed it. The beat &volume when you were stressing, seemed forced, overwhelming&distracting. I am already biting my nails w/o it. Like a marvel movie trying to push me or a laugh track not trusting the content is enough.
If you want to add music while polishing, an instrumental, low key &no vocals would be fine &may enhance.
Note on editing. A few times while grinding, camera switched to show a side view of you, but I prefer seeing the action in your capable hands. Your words keep me focused &aware you are always concerned that the audience is w/you.
Lol thanks
“Nothing is set in concrete” but these sure are set in stone!😂
Everybody's a critic....not me. I know all the time it takes to make a video. I appreciate your sharing!
I appreciate that!
Fabulous stone, I was worried with those sand layers. I could do without the alien invasion music, my stress was plenty high already- (Just kidding,l I know the others like it) You are a master and I am addicted!
Jarrod Rod Joyce from PELICAN La 👀👍🥌
Just love watching your videos puts me in my happy place when I can't polish at the moment but have to say didn't like the music prefer you and the machines lol
noted thank you
didn't care for the music, but it didn't bother me either.
Hi, Justin where do you located I have Ethiopian gemstone. I am at NSW.
Not for me thanks
Love your show! I'm a rock hound/gold panner. 62 years younger. I have always wanted to cut Jem's, rocks. You do awesome work.
How's pickings been, lately? I'm sadly limited to fossil hunting, where I'm at, and it's too friggin cold to be out creek ratting!
I love your video's, watched them all and always wait for the next. I wish we could see were the opals go, like the jewelry there set in and all. Keep up the great work, subscriber for life 💚
Music got a bit distracting but what magnificent color.
Never knew anything about opals before except that it is my birthstone.
This has truly been a great learning experience. Now when I go to our local gem show I will definitely have some idea of what I am looking at.
And buying a doublet is not a bad thing as long as you know what it is, you like it and it is affordable. Thanks so much.
same here, i got interested because it was my birthstone and i was watching some chemistry channels recreate the stone in the lab
I enjoyed both watching the stone come out, and this new time slot!
Thanks for sharing ❤
Love watching these videos and really appreciate the effort it takes to produce them. That said, I was a bit disappointed in this one. The joy of this channel is in watching an artist at his craft. The stars of the show are Justin's narration, the stories, the wheel, and watching the gems unfold. The constant cuts away from the gem as he's grinding and putting the music over the narrative was really jarring and frustrating to me. It drew away from the building excitement about what the gem could be, and when it was finishing to not be able to see it was maddening.
Yeah music was prob too loud
@@blackopaldirect Just a glitch. Love your channel!
Breathe with a soft sigh
Neck bent back towards the sky
Gems, fit for the eye.
Ohh yeahhhh I love it
yet another awesome and relaxing video for us, is there a music credits list?
I wanted to know who sang the last song too.
Rather hear the wheels turning than the music.
So stressful, but so glad you got a good stone out of it. Looks so pretty.
Hi I want to buy a rock polisher/ grinder that isn't a tumbler but am only a complete beginner so was wondering if you could suggest any to start me off. Thanks
I would not use a tumbler on opals it is to rough
@@blackopaldirect so would you suggest any grinder type polishers rather than tumblers?
Anyone else cheerleading him on while he's on the wheel?
Oh my goodness Yes. I was like Go Justin go, Go Justin Go! Hehe🥳
i love your silliness! and how your all business at the wheel! thank you!
can tell you get a rush from it
3 minutes into the video and I'm already tense! It's been 2 days and it's all done, but ... hope hope hope!
edit: holy mo, how much more excitement can you get out of a stone I'll never own? I just want there to be a winner for Justin please!
Beautiful! Truly. In time there'll be a black winner from a knobby, I know there will.
I have this thing about the concept of "treasure hunting", that people are constantly treasure hunting in lots of ways. Weather it's opal cutting, bird watching, antiquing, fishing, coin roll hunting, blueberry picking, mining, on and on -- all of it is treaure hunting. Nothing wrong with that.
Don't care at all for the background music addition. I am here for the opals. This would cause me to stop watching.
Agreed
I'd just like to commend your video director! what an excellent choice of music and editing. The respect and admiration for Justin's handwork is evident.
You did a great job on that stone. Its gorgeous! Wow you're amazing! God bless you and thank you
I really enjoyed the vocalist who sang the last of the music track. She had a wonderful voice. It complimented the lovely stone you cut.
I agree. It was very relaxing.
Isn't it possible to cut that stone in half and start cutting from the other side? If that stone stays so milky, isn't that an option? Try to learn here.
What a beautiful stone love it , great video keep doing what ya do, your crazy dancing and being silly makes your channel.
The epic music was just too much the suspense was enough... I had my coffee on my lap btw. I won't sue it's okay ✌️😆
I love... Im going in....
Fun colors that flash around. I like the stone
What is the track playing while you were cutting? Thanks for another EXCELLENT opal vid!! You Rock!!👍🏼💜😁
You are AMAZING.....!!! Any chance you could add a Name if the song/artist link to the Description Section? The music you use is almost as AMAZING as you.
What a beautiful Opal! Just so happy it worked out for you. I could feel your stress lol. Kept saying breathe Justin breathe. But Must say I so love your videos. 😁 They help with my anxiety & depression. I enjoyed the 2nd part of the music. Great job you guys.
please you dont need OVERBAREING DRAMA MUSIC, PLEASE. YOU TALKING IS FINE. STARTING TO DRIVE ME AWAY.!
Amazing technique creating a beautiful gem but the music here is sort of weird. N-5 (1.75Ct $1500 sounds fair. Cheap Smoked Ethiopian (Black opal stones) seem to have found there way for sale at cheap prices fooling buyers.
Hello Justin, I am new to your channel, & I am very excited about your education here and all the teachings you do, you are awesome. I am a GIA graduate at 51 years old, and loving every moment. I love Rubies, & lately, I am falling in love so much with Opals. With all that said, I appreciate your videos. Please let me know when is your next lottery draw to win a small jar of Opals from Australia. Thank You so much, from Comte Sayed Najem :)
So much unnecessary emotion. I know that you have been doing this a long time, so I guess you've had time to learn to relax while you work? The music, combined with the emotional expression, is just too hard to watch and enjoy. Remember: If you're relaxed, then I relax.....and, I keep watching!
I know we all wanted a nice big stone with that amazing broad flash/flagstone pattern and range of colour, but hell you still got nearly 2 carats out of it. As long as you make money on the stone, it's a winner! (and it really is pretty.) Thank you again for sharing your work with us!
I could almost see the opal crying when he said he'd have to make it into a smaller stone 😂
Love this channel I just found and I've been binge watching. The music on this video was very annoying and didn't go with the video at all IMHO. Sorry. Luv the channel though, and usually it's great.
It looks like a lava flow in the rough. How can you leave the flow edges, brighten the lava stream and set this piece in a nice silver cabochon that sets off its magnificence?
Save some more of Gods work and highlight the part you wish.
Less worry. Honor the artist,
Perception. A different way of looking at the same rock! ;-)
May 2023. I really like your videos and the beauty you bring to the world. I love that you are teaching and showing the world your craft and how difficult it is.
But I think this may be the last video I watch. I'm going to assume that you're making an ok living and I hope I'm correct. I want everyone to be in a good place in life.
And there is my rub. You are doing what you love to do and making a living from it. Your father taught you this beautiful craft. And that's a great story in itself.
And mother nature is giving you the opportunity to make a living and create and share it's beauty and ...
You cheapen or make me depressed when you talk about how much money you lost buy something becoming less carats or losing money.
Your not losing anything. These stones are limitless, at least in your lifetime. And it only maked you sound greedy as hell when you talk about your loss.
I really liked what you are doing. I'm homeless and it was beautiful watching you uncover the beauty of the stones. But the more videos I watched, the more the beauty faded from your videos.
I'm 61, so I've seen alot around the world so I'm not a kid that doesn't understand how the world works.
I even feel bad about being negative but it was just something that kept bothering me the more videos I watched.
I liked your videos so much, that I even created a watch list of your videos on my RUclips account.
Well, I hope you take this comment in the way it was intended. To internally appreciate what you have and not what you lost, money.
✌️
Justin, you really don’t need the backing track - the whole process of cutting opals is engrossing enough, without the addition of music!
The music is a distraction and NOT entertaining. Especially when it plays over your speaking..
I love your videos because they let my mind be distracted from the outside World, thoughts and stresses and it is totally relaxing. That is why some can fall asleep.
The music took that away. All the music. I actually turned the sound off.
I hope the dramatic music was added during the edit! During the cut I would think the sounds of a spring breeze or softly lapping waves would do! 18:32 long-term effects of inhaling opal dust become apparent ! 😁😁😁
The music is overpowering. If you have to use it, use it in the background to where you can hardly hear it.
Thx Justin!!!
Screams -yeah❓ but my grandpa was saying : When you hear about plenty of eggs take with you the smaller basket" Just saying Justin - you know better and hold it in your hands - and most importantly... PAID FOR IT ‼️😂😂😂😂😂
I would so love to be your student Opal Obiwan! You would have to duct tape my mouth shut though lol. I saw your sweat dripping beside the wheel I think 😂😂 Your videos are my favorites
Hey Justin, stone came out really nice. At times you just don’t know how the outcome will be until you start grinding away. I enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing more.😊
lol so I'm watching and suddenly I realize I'm 5 inches away from my 14" monitor on my laptop and trying to look over your fingers to see what's going on with the opal. Shaking my head at my self laughing.
Top gem indeed!
