    Willie is one of the last old old legends that's thankfully still around. He's a great songwriter.
    He wrote a hit song called "Crazy" for a late legend named Patsy Cline. Recorded around 1961-62. That's over 60 years ago, and he was already an accomplished artist! Mind blowing to think about.
    I wish someone would interview him about all the interactions he's had with all of the old legends. There's probably so many awesome experiences that he's had that we'll never know. 😕

    One minor correction. Nothing against you because if you've never heard of him you would have no way of knowing but just for your future reference, Merle's name is pronounced to rhyme with "curl" or as if it were spelled MURL. Jimmy Dean was a respected country music singer, who also had a lot of success with his own brand of sausage and other breakfast items. His career spanned from 1957-2010, when he passed away. Willie Nelson had some huge hit records, and is a cultural icon. He wrote more hits for others than he actually did himself. He was more popular for his RV, The Honeysuckle Rose, and his special blend of the whacky weed, than anything else.

    Willie Nelson is Country, through and through. He is a corner stone, and you will love this journey. He is also known for smoking herb, and I believe Snoop even said that he couldn't keep up with Willie. When I was a kid, he had an biography written. He told the authors many stories, both on and off the record. One of the of record stories found it's way into the book of him visiting the white house and smoking weed in the balcony with an unnamed secret service agent. It started an investigation, and when he refused to reveal the agent's name, the IRS ran him through the ringer. He was in a long battle and lost a lot, but never snitched.
    You mentioned his guitar. There is a documentary about that guitar. It has been through a lot, but as far as I know, he still hasn't retired it. The documentary was fascinating.

    3:00 You couldn't be further off with Willie Nelson. This guy is old man but as far as I know he's still kicking, I saw him here in my hometown in Lawrence Kansas maybe as recently as even seven years ago or so and he had his sister with him who apparently they both started playing music together when they were like four and six years old. He was a huge part of the so-called Outlaw country movement and also they called him the red headed stranger. He's known for smoking lots of pot and not giving a fuck. But what's even more interesting to me as a musician is that in the 50s when he was very young, he would have shorter hair and kind of Glen Campbell sideburns any would wear pleated slacks and a nice polyester shirt and he had more of a jazz upbringing and you can still hear it in his acoustic guitar playing today. He's a stand-up guy man he really is. He's one of the Towering Giants in country music and he was a fantastic songwriter, who not only wrote huge hits like Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, but he wrote the Patsy Cline mega-hit, Crazy.

    1:38 I know it's early into it but I just had to pause it after your last comment and say, you know what man I have actually met Merle Haggard before and I've even spoken directly with him maybe twice I would say but he's one of my heroes in terms of storytellers in country music but what a lot of people don't realize actually is that this song has quite a bit of irony to it.
    He was doing the endless tour bus thing that you do on a tour when you're rolling around the country playing gigs and he had fallen asleep and the Greyhound bus was rapidly moving past yet another little highway sign with the name of a small town, and he saw that it was Muscogee, and he looked out his window and he was on an overpass and he could see downtown flashing bye, like the you know that two-block long Main Street that I know so well from having grown up in rural areas at least some of my life.
    And he just had this whole sleepy kind of vision of, man nobody fucks around here man; they're not going to put up with any of that long-haired shit, laugh. It doesn't mean that he was 100% sympathetic to that so much as he felt sorry for them. On the other hand he is a good old boy himself so. It all kind of works.

    • @Gutslinger
      @Gutslinger Год назад

      "It doesn't mean that he was 100% sympathetic to that so much ad felt sorry for them." - ...felt sorry for who, exactly?
      Merle told The Boot in 2010 that he "wrote the song to support those (Vietnam) soldiers." It was a protest towards the protesters of the Vietnam War. Haggard's family was from the area, and that's where he first performed the song in 1969.

    • @stevedahlberg8680
      @stevedahlberg8680 Год назад

      @@Gutslinger I have interacted with him directly about that back in the early 1980s and yes, it's just not quite as black-and-white as you are thinking. 100% he was very supportive of the soldiers because that was a difficult time. I was only in grade school but I remember guys for my neighborhood literally just disappearing and some of them coming back really super messed up. And I Heard lots and lots of first-hand stories. So I think a lot of people are against it including me ultimately but that was more about the politics of it and not the people that were actually having to go through that mess. For them, I still have a huge place in my heart and always will. And yeah he obviously felt the same way definitely.

      Okie is a nickname, sometimes pejorative, for someone from Oklahoma. It was especially used for those who migrated from Oklahoma to California during the Dust Bowl. Muskogee is a city and a county in Oklahoma, and also the name of a native American tribe which was relocated to Oklahoma. It is also a county in Georgia very near to where I live. The song about the town where everything is “good clean fun” and so on is also satire.

    Jimmy Dean, who owned the sausage company, had been a country music performer. Jimmy Dean is no longer living.
    Willie was just playing around. The line is: the kids still respect the college dean. This song is an anti-hippie song.
    There is a lot you have not heard. Yes, okie is slang for a person from Oklahoma. Merle Haggard was born in California, but his parents were from Oklahoma. They moved to California in 1934, and Merle was born in 1937.
    Many people moved from Oklahoma and surrounding states to California in the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Bakersfield area where Merle Haggard grew up was home to many of these people. Listen to the song "Streets of Bakersfield".

    Jimmy Dean is a good Ol' whiskey. But, the original lyric was the 'College Dean', a reference to the to College campus drama of the 60s

    Willie broke the Muskogee rules with his long hair and weed. And, yes, 'Okie' is a slang term for someone from Oklahoma. It was a popular term used during the Dust Bowl and Depression days when "Okies" were migrating to other states. John Steinbeck kind of memorialized the term in his 1939 book, The Grapes of Wrath.

    I love your reactions to country music. I literally laughed out loud when you said "people have good teeth that grow in their head." I've never heard that expression and thought it was funny!

    Jimmy Dean was a Country music singer. I think his most famous song was "Big Bad John". Merle's parents were from the Muskogee area before they moved to California. Willie is from Texas. He is now 89 years old. Merle left us in 2016. Merle left behind several sons and they are all good singers. Ben, Marty and Noel are my favorites. They look and sound like Merle. By the way, Merle rhymes with girl!!

    Ray (with his name on his guitar strap) is Ray Benson, another country legend. Maybe not on the same par as Willie and Merle but right up there himself.

    Willie's guitar is one of the most infamous guitars. He named it Trigger.
    He's had it for decades, and once sent it overseas so that the Feds couldn't confiscate it. I think something to do with taxes.. It's a unique guitar that he partially customized. It's had a hole in the front side for years. I watched a highly viewed RUclips video of a guitar repairman repairing it. I think he had a bunch of famous signatures all over the guitar, but I may be wrong.
    Willie and his guitar, Trigger, was in an episode of King of the Hill where Willie and Hank played together.

    You want a good chuckle, check out the video called "Willie Nelson - Toby Keith - Scott Emerick". The song is called "I'll Never Smoke Weed with Willie Again". But be sure to select the video titled "Willie Nelson - Toby Keith - Scott Emerick". It's a song about what really happens on Willie's tour bus after a gig. Very funny stuff! You'll get a kick out of it.

    I first heard of this song around the 6th grade around 2002, when my best friend started singing it. He altered the lyrics, after we both got caught smoking random stuff in the tree house on the playground at school. (Dumb decision, I know.)
    We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee. 🎶

    Jimmy Dean was a country singer for decades before he sold his first package of sausage. He died about 20 years ago. One of his more famous songs is Big Bad John. Willie Nelson is a famous song singer and writer. He started off in the 1950s and is still working. One of his famous songs is Blue eyes crying in the rain. He has a very long extended catalog of songs. More than you would consider being included in a meer list. He has a fondness for herbal remedies and likes to roll his own. Many artists like to tell stories about smoking with Willie. Toby Keith has a song called Smoking with Willy that is on par with Red Dixie cup. One of Toby's more famous songs is How do you like me now. He has many famous songs but that is as good of a place to start as any.

    Seven Spanish Angels with Ray Charles and Willie Nelson is an amazing song. Also, just a friendly heads up, Merle rhymes with pearl. 😊
    Has anyone suggested you react to Coward of the County yet? It's another Kenny Rogers, and one of the greats as far as story songs go.
