Hank Williams Junior had a severe life threatening injury . His face was surgically rebuilt . From a bag of mush to a functional face. His music spans decades but probablly his most famous songs are the theme song for the NFL and "a country boy can survive" He also performed many of his fathers songs
June was Hank Jr's Godmother. For years, Hank and Johnny had the highest grossing concert ever for their show at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1969
those are both great songs he is well known for but his most famous just maybe "Family Tradition!"
I saw him in a movie (rock in my shoe) before his accident. He looked totally different afterwards.
'All my rowdy friends have settled down.'
The guys were all trying to match Johnny's deep delivery. He had such a an iconic voice.
Kristofferson was the lone exception, and I think it worked for him here.
Yes, that was Willie. Note: Johnny, Willie, and Kris were in a super group together called The Highwaymen. That’s well worth checking out. I’d start with the band’s namesake song The Highwayman.
The fourth member of the group as Waylon Jennings
Waylon was a major part of that group too. Waylon, Willie and the boys
Cash did a lot of gospel, June, his wife, came from country music royalty and was a star on her own. His catalog is endless.
Cash was never imprisoned. He performed in several prisons. Was arrested a few times for minor crimes. Cash enlisted in the Air Force on July 7, 1950. After basic training at Lackland Air Force Base and technical training at Brooks Air Force Base, both in San Antonio, Texas, Cash was assigned to the 12th Radio Squadron Mobile of the U.S. Air Force Security Service at Landsberg, West Germany. He worked as a Morse code operator intercepting Soviet Army transmissions.
Johnny started his career in the 50's and recorded until months before his death. He recorded more than 1 live album in prisons doing concerts for inmates. Folsom prison blues is one you should react to. Also Hurt. It was the last video he gave us. I will always love and miss him ❤️
Hank Jr. was doing an impersonation of Johnny's voice and did a decent job with it. Johnny was a natural baritone and but could some base to high tenor, so he at least had a 4 octave range. Johnny's voice was very distinctive because he had a natural quiver in his voice when he sang, like no other artist since or before. Johnny was the King of Country during his time. George Strait holds that honor now.
“Will the circle” was written in 1907 by an English woman named Ada Habershon. It was recorded many times but the version in this clip is the version that The Carter Family recorded with lyrics they changed to make it more their style. Johnny sang it during most of his concerts.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did a Grammy winning anthology record featuring Mother Maybelle and other old timers called 'Will the Circle be Unbroken'. The sequel to that featured Johnny. Both ended with all the performers singing the song.. That's why they were called on to do this segment.
Britt (being a newbie to the country genre) probably doesn't know the history behind Johnny and the legendary Carter family and that he was married to June Carter, one of the sisters in the Carter family.
One of the great Johnny Cash song was DADDY SANG BASS.
Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristoffson, and Willie Nelson formed a super group called The Highwaymen and did an album of the same name. The lead song on the album was THE HIGHWAYMAN. Just imagine that much talent and experience on one stage. It is obvious they did not do this for the money or fame. They all had more than their share of those things. They did it for the love of their craft and for the fun.
If you do this song, I highly recommend that you do the Official Video. And have the lyrics pulled up. This song is very unique and is an experience. The group toured the country and made several albums. The love, friendship and respect between the four men is apparent.😢
@@beegee1960 One of the greatest nights of my life was seeing The Highwaymen live in Rotterdam NL in the early '90s.! Heaven on Earth!
He is mimmicking and immitating Johnny here. Some of that is so he can hear himself better. He sounds just like Johnny here.
A room full of legends singing tribute to a legend. These are all people you should research and learn about. The roots of decades of great music. Thanks Britt!!
Johnny had a deep strong voice that could cut through any background instruments
Every one of them are legends of Country music. Great video....
HAVING THESE ARTIST TOGETHER IS A GEM. ONE YOU TRY TO KEEP❤❤❤
Hank Jr, is actually doing that, 2 git a Johnny Cash sound, which he did very well . Not only did Johnny encourage Hank, when he fell off the mountain, and almost died, he, and his wife June, were his GodParent’s, and visited him almost daily, as he recovered 😎😎😎👍👍👍
You never gonna get better writer of songs than Kris!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
Hank Williams Jr is another iconic star, his father, Hank Sr, is the pioneer of country music and Jrs catalog is incredible. Country Boy Can Survive... All My Rowdy Friends... My Name is Bocephus... Family Tradition... the list goes on and on.
Me and Johnny Cash have the same birthday. 40 years apart both in a leap year. That's cool to me, I don't care who you are.
Fish in’ in the Dark by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, it is a country staple 😊
I believe the entire tribute was time lining Johnny's life and career. The ups and downs. Some of the impressions were spot on.
He was also at Sun Studios with Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis
Exactly had a skiing accident fell off a cliff, and his face had to be reconstructed, and once healed didn't slow him down, but he does wear sunglasses alot, so he's getting up there in age, plus ear plugs may hurt listing to, so he uses his hand to hear his voice.
Will the Circle is most associated with Johnny's wife's June Carter's family, the Carter family was THE pioneering recording artists and Johnny and June often performed it. It is so iconic that if you watch the Grand Ole Opry performances, you'll notice the stage has a circle of wood in the middle of it. When the Opry moved from the Ryman downtown, to the new larger venue at Opryland, they took a circle from the Ryman stage and placed it Opryland on the stage there and it is a tribute to that song and tied the two venues and histories together. Ring of Fire that was performed in this was also a song written by June Carter Cash. June's mother is referred to as Mother Maybelle Carter, mother of country music and she had a unique guitar style that now people work to emulate, and June's sisters Anita and Helen, along with June performed together as the Carter Family and were much bigger stars when Johnny came along and fell in love with June, despite them being married to other people. Mother Maybelle was a part of the original Carter singing group from the 20's and 30's which consisted of Maybelle and her brother in law and sister in law, AP and Sara Carter. Johnny basically married into the royal family of country music when he married June..
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did the anthology record featuring old timers like Mother Maybelle called 'Will the Circle be Unbroken'. Johnny was featured on a sequel. That's why they are doing this segment in the tribute.
Hank Jr. is trying to hear himself while on stage. Yes Johnny had a deep low voice. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band; listen to them sing Fishing in the Dark.
In addition to his singing talents, Johnny Cash could also act. He was a guest star in a Columbo episode and the song he did in that one was also a hymn. The episode was S3E7. Columbo, played by the late Peter Falk, was a detective with a very unusual style, very, very persistent! That was a great TV show. I have it in my home collection. If you ever watched the Princess Bride you saw Peter Falk. He was the grandpa reading the story. If you've never seen the movie you *must* react to it! It's iconic and has the greatest fencing scenes ever done in movies.
I had never seen that before that was awesome.
Johnny was a legend and an influence on so many people in so many genres. People from every style of music give Johnny credit as impacting their own careers and music. His catalog is deep and long.
They’re all Johnny Cash songs because this a Tribute to Johnny Cash. Some were popularized by Johnny Cash.
So much to say. June Carter Cash was from a famous country music family. She was a comedienne as well as a singer. She wrote "Ring of Fire" and many other songs. She was Johnny's love and life. She died shortly after the video of "Hurt". Johnny followed soon after.
Johnny's resonant baritone was his trademark. You heard it when he sang and when he spoke. Enough for now. May you have the day that YOU deserve.
This is so great Britt .. Johnny Cash was so unique and so loved. These artists on this video are all ones you can react to and learn some great new songs. Kris Christopherson.. Travis Tritt, . The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band .. Hank Williams Jr. , Sheryl Crow and of course , Willie Nelson have some very cool , original , heartfelt and sometimes rebel - party songs. 🎼🎈🎼
It’s about Jackson Mississippi. Johnny Cash sang it with June Carter Cash his wife and she sang with a famous family group the Carters which sang gospel music
Johnny Cash had a very deep voice, whether singing or speaking
The one holding his face is Waylon Jennings and he is doing that to try and get the sound of Johnny Cash at certain poins of the song.
"Will The Circle Be Unbroken?" is traditionally the closing song at The Grand 'Ole Opry in Nashville. Whomever is performing that day generally closes their show with that song. Upon its' beginning ANY / ALL members of the Grand 'Ole Opry who are present at that time are STRONGLY requested to get to the stage ASAP and join in the singing of that song!
May the Circle be Unbroken is an ancient Gospel hymn written in 1907 decades before Cash’s birth. The first time it hit the charts and was played on radio was when the first family of country music recorded it. That was The Carter Family in the 1920’s One of the members was Maybelle Carter mother of June and future mother in law of Johnny Cash. He and June sang a lot of the Carter Family songs.
Don't forget the anthology by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band called 'Will the Circle be Unbroken' that featured Mother Maybelle, and the 2nd follow up that feature Johnny. That was why they were selected for this part.
What a stage generations of greats...loved watching it again with u
Hank Jr is imitating Johnny Cash's manorisms
Johnny Cash broght me to (Country)Music. :)
First Recording 1955, last recordings 2003, the year he passed away...
And yes, he had a really low voice and a big vocal range!
Willie is 89 now, still recording and touring. Kris retired a year or two ago.
"Will the circle be unbroken" was first recorded by the Carter Family... so it stays in the family (June Carter was Johns second wive).
And Hank, jr. ... I don't know... I think he was high or drunk on that show! 😀
Sooooo... Time to check out John's original versions of these songs! ;)
Interesting fact I just found. Johnny Cash's first wife was Vivian Liberto Disin a black author. They were married from 1954 to 1966. They had 4 children the eldest, a daughter Rosanne Cash is a country singer.
...and Johnny treated Vivian horribly. Basically, he abandoned his wife and 4 kids to chase after June Carter. This disgraceful aspect of his life was one of the themes that colored one of his last recordings -- "Hurt."
....fun fact: Johnny Cash and Elvis spent a good portion of their teenage years not 40 miles from each other! Johnny Cash in Dyess, AR and Elvis in city housing near the downtown area of Memphis, TN!!! they would later meet at Sun Records on Union Ave in Memphis.
“Fishin’ in the Dark”, by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is great!
Yes, that redheaded stranger is Willie Nelson. He has written so many songs that were hits for other singers.
Another great tribute to Johnny... "I Walk the Line, Revisited"... It is a modification of the original song (The one that Willie Nelson sang in this video" and it features clips from a very young Johnny (I would guess from back in the 1950's), BEFORE Johnny became the "Man in Black"... The song is done by Rodney Crowwell, who was once married to Johnny's daughter, Roseanne, who is also a singer as well..
Johnny was one half of a super group called "The Million Dollar Quartet"... Four artists that had (Originally) come from Sun Records, that made a huge impact on music, not to mention, pioneered rock and roll, around the year 1955... The quartet included Johnny, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and, of course, Elvis...
Yes, the first was Willy Nelson and the second was Hank Williams Jr. No idea why Hank “Bocefus” was doing all that with his face but I have a suspicion about that. Yes Johnny Cash did cover that song and his version was the most popular.
That song "Jackson" would be about Jackson, Tennessee which is almost halfway between Memphis and Nashville and where Carl Perkins lived. Carl wrote and recorded Blue Suede Shoes. Carl also played guitar in Johnny's band which included fellow Jacksonian, W. S. "Fluke" Holland on drums.
Love your channel!
Willie Nelson is my idol! Love when he sings seven Spanish angels
Love your reactions and by the way you are absolutely beautiful and wonderful to watch your reactions.
I saw reference to THE HIGHWAY MEN. Willie ,Johnny, Chris, and Walon. Toured together a true country super group that will never be matched. You should react to them ... SERIOUSLY !!!!
Johnny Cash got his start singing gospel music throughout his career he was known to put out a gospel album every now and then.
Hank Jr usually has a guitar in hand on stage.
Hank Jr is mimicking some of Cash’s mannerisms while singing.
“It’s a Great Day to be Alive”, by Travis Tritt!
Hank Williams, Jr. does not sing that way normally. He most likely was trying to sing like Johnny Cash’s low baritone voice. “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?” was written by Ada R. Habershon and Charles H. Gabriel in 1907. Part of the song is included in the song, “Daddy Sang Bass”, which was recorded by Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, and The Statler Brothers in 1968 (and written by Carl Perkins). Johnny Cash was a great songwriter, but he was not afraid to record covers of songs by other music artists and groups. He did so all the way to the end of his life.
The Carter family were famous for signing "circle be unbroken". Johnny married June Carter (of the Carter family)and someone wrote him a song that has the chorus to that song in it. The circle was indeed unbroken.
Johnny Cash's song "Daddy'll Sing Bass" uses parts of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" in it.
React to
Johnny Cash
THE MAN IN BLACK
A song he wrote to let people know what he stood for awesome song
Johnny Cash was known for the man in Black
All the clothing he wore was always black and it stood for something and that's what the song is what it stood for
Keep up the good work Brittreacts 🙏🏻❤️✌🏾💯
That song "Can the Circle be Unbroken" was written by the Carter Family using only the chorus of the gospel hymn "Will the Circle be Unbroken". The other lyrics are different, including the line "what Mother Maybelle taught us", a reference to Maybelle Carter.
And while the writer of "Jackson" never said, Johnny Cash made it clear he was singing about Jackson, Tennessee.
Johnny Cash is country music , period.
In Johnnie's early years while performing solo with no backup instruments, Johnnie would put a match book cover in the guitat strings near the end. The vibrations of the strings through the batch book would sound like a snare drum and helped him keep time. Yes, Johnnie had a low register.
Beautiful comment, too. Thank you.
First singer is Willie Nelson. Everybody has sung "May the Circle Be Unbroken".
Lol no Bocephus is channeling Johnny Cash. When he said Sooie!!! Johnny said that to rep. Arkansas, where he was from.
I believe WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN was written by someone else, but an arrangement by AP Carter (who wrote “keep on the Sunny side“), June, Carter Cash’s uncle made the song famous. It was sung by the carter family, influential folk group from the hills of East Tennessee, led by mother, Maybelle, and her two daughters, one of whom, June, married Johnny Cash.
Will the Circle Be Unbroken was first written in 1907.
Johnny Cash version with completely different lyrics was 1963
You could do a full year reaction to Johnny Cash and someone would say, "Wait, there's more!"
It would easily take over two years to cover all of his catalog of recordings.
Johnny, Willie, Waylon (Jennings), and Kris (Krisstofferson) were the highwaymen.
I will add as a long time drummer that exploring different genres of music has made me a whole person at 67. You seem to be going down that avenue yourself. When you reach my age you'll say the same thing I'm sure. Stick to it and you will see!.
Hi Britt. That was Willie. Hank Jr was doing his impersonation of Johnny. late in their careers 4 of the biggest stars of country music got together and formed a super group called The Highwaymen. It was Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. Check them out. They did some of each guys songs in their concerts and a song that became their signature song called The Highwayman.
Johnny performed at Folsom Prison.
Nitty Gritty dirt band check out Mr Bojangles they were Awesome
Hank was good friends with Johnny .
Hank was goofing on Big John .
Same way Johnny and Elvis goofed each other .
Absolutel LEGENDS on that stage!!! 💙💜💙💜💙💜 what I grew with and the BEST of country music.
Side note - treat yourself to "I'll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again" w/Toby Keith. Pure hilarity.
Cash had a famously low voice. You could do a whole week on Johnny Cash songs. He was very socially conscious, and also has a ton of just fun songs. You can sort of track his personal demons in his music, too. Hank Williams Jr. might have been high this day when he sang "Ring of Fire"; which in itself would have been a tribute of sorts to Cash and also to Hank's famous father. The guy singing "Jackson" (yes, Mississippi) is Travis Tritt. He's got some fun stuff. "May the Circle Be Unbroken" isn't a Cash original - but it's a traditional closing number for many old school country and bluegrass artists.
Hank Williams Jr is doing a impression of Johnny Cash
Looks like too much blow.
Willie nelson, is the one person snoop said could smoke him under the table.
Hank is imitating Johnny
Willie Nelson and Kris kristopherson were with Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings as the highway men. The song highway men would be a great song to reach to
Hey hey, I was born in 1932 and I am still here kicking!!!!
In the late 60's Willie was a regular on a San António radio station. Already a legend and a pretty funny guy. Already having 4th of July parties.
Both Johnny Cash and Merle Haggert , spent time in Folsom Prison. The songs are Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter songs.
Hank Jr. was imitating Johnny Cash
HE IS DOING THOSE THINGS TO HELP HIM SING "LOW" LIKE JOHNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hank jr is impersonating Johnny Cash.
The movie Walk the Line, with Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix, is about Johnny and June. Great movie!
Johnny was a man of God and was full of faith, but he also lived with a lot of darkness. And he constantly battled between the two.
You should react to Johnny Cash, Man in Black, live at a University he toured, tells a lot about him
Hank Williams Jr is imitating the voice of Johnny Cash (and pretty good at it too). Both he and Willie were singing low like Cash did in those two songs.
There is a video of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performing Will the Circle be unbroken with legendary old time country singers. Also on the lighter side, check out Fishing in the Dark by NGDB.
You should watch the movie “Walk the line” which is based on Johnny’s life
Johnny never spent time in prison but he wrote and sang alot of prison songs.
Willie Nelson did a duet " you belong to my heart in Spanish it's solamente Una Vez" with Little Joe and La Familia it's worth a listen ❤️❤️❤️
Love it love it love!
Johnny incorporated the chorus of Will The Circle Be Unbroken, into his song Daddy Sang Bass.
Willie Nelson is the BIGGEST name and one of the BIGGEST legends to this music... I have been to probably hundreds of Willie concerts over several years... Willie is not doing so well health wise but still does hundreds of shows per year. Willie has written more songs than most ever will... Kris Kristofferson was a great song writer as well - not a great singer though... These all all legends.
Great Reaction 👍🙏👣
Hank is singing like Johnny did. He was imitating him.
mother maybelle carter is june carters mother and johnny's motherinlaw you should listen to the album will the circle be unbroken by the nitty gritty dirt band
Sheryl Crow is singing like Johnny Cash's wife June Carter Cash. Johnny and June sang together and were married and had a child. There is even a movie on them.
Johnny Cash Live from Folsom Prison .
Your welcome .
Yes Johnny became very religious after he married his wife, June Carter .She sang many of those religious songs with him.
The second artist, Hank Williams Jr, was June Carter Cash's godson. He was imitating Johnny Cash, that's not his normal style. When Hank fell down a mountain and almost died, Johnny and June were the first people he saw when he woke up in the hospital.
