    Thank You, The man won a Rhode Scholarship to Oxford, was a Captain & helicopter pilot, was disowned by family but went on to become one of the best songwriters ever, an a actor, and for me he sang songs that reminded of where I'd been the good and the bad. The poetry of "Sunday Morning Comin' Down" is more than music. It is imagery. I feel every part of his aches, pains, depression. I have loved this since I was in junior high. The man is a legend. He has shared the beauty in his soul with all of us. Sometime watch a concert video of the Highwaymen. Kris and Johnny sing this masterpiece together, backed up by Willie and Waylon.

    Kristofferson's songwriting credits include "Me and Bobby McGee", "For the Good Times", "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", and "Help Me Make It Through the Night", all of which were hits for other artists. The second half of his professional life was spent pretty much as an actor. He appeared in dozens of movies. He was married in the '70s to Rita Coolidge (who counted among her intimate friends such musical luminaries as Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash though she only married Kristofferson). Thanks BK and Harri.

      @John_Chu Год назад

      @@lathedauphinot6820 Gordon is a really disturbed character. Still in prison serving a life sentence for killing his mother. He also physically abused Rita during their brief liaison. Give the devil his due, Gordon was a musical savant...that's him playing the coda to "Layla," another reason for Bobby Whitlock to hate his bandmates. Whitlock must be the only person to think Duane Allman sucked on guitar.

    • @lathedauphinot6820
      @lathedauphinot6820 Год назад

      @@John_Chu HaHa! He didn’t think Duane sucked. He still has the glass slide he gave him and ties his guitar strings the way he showed him, but there is some jealousy there when he says, “We didn’t need him. We had the best band in the world.” Which might be true, but they were even better with Duane Allman. He’d known Duane & Gregg since Delaney and Bonnie days, so it’s kind of funny Clapton didn’t know Duane or JJ Cale, who was also around, until later. Duane called Whitlock “Little Brother” when he and Gregg weren’t getting along, and he’s godfather to one of Gregg’s children. Whitlock also said “Jim Gordon was the best drummer in the whole damn world, but that wasn’t enough for him. He wanted to be a rock star too, the crazy so & so.”

    Kristofferson was a Rhodes scholar. He was also a great athlete. He flew helicopters in Vietnam. He worked as a janitor in Nashville in a recording studio to get his foot in the door. I think he handed a demo tape to Johnny Cash and his wife and heard nothing back, so he got one of his helicopter buddies to drop him off on Johnny Cash’s front lawn. He rang the doorbell and handed Cash the tape. This song was on that tape, and the next week Johnny Cash opened his show with it.

    Someone else might've mentioned this, but I suspect that the reason Kris looks skyward and then chokes up when he sings the line "Wishing Lord that I was stoned" is because Johnny Cash defied the TV executives to sing that lyric as written on his national TV show. One of the truly fortunate things that have peppered my life, but I was there, at that tribute show at the Ryman. Magical night.

    You need to find some Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley. Great story tellers and song writers

    Another great songwriter is Tom T Hall. He sang mostly his own stories or takes told directly to him.

    You kind of had to be there in the 70s when the peace and love generation transitioned into harder drugs. Stumbling out of an all night party facing Sunday morning and all the values you left behind. Awesome song. Check out "Why Me Lord" ...another great song by Kris.

    Today would have been the 80th birthday of Janis Joplin. She and Kris were very friendly, he didn't know she recorded his song Me and Bobby McGee until after her death..., He has said she owned that song.

    1. Kris came upon a fork in the road between an taking an offer of an English professorship at WEST POINT or pursuing his craft of songwriting. He turned down the professorship and headed to Nashville.
    2. To make money, he was a part-time offshore helicopter pilot working in the Gulf of Mexico. Which meant he was oftentimes traveling through Baton Rouge, Louisiana to and from Nashville.
    A. That's how he had access to a helicopter.
    B. "Me and Bobby McGee" was written during this time. Hence, the first line of the song is "Busted flat in Baton Rouge waiting for a train"

    Btw, those two songs you like “Help me make it through the night” & For the Good Times” are Covers.
    The originals were both smash hits for “Sammi Smith & Ray Price.
    Sammi Smith career got started because her hit and Ray Prices career was resurrected by For the Good Times.
    Ray price was huge in the 50’s (and was a friend of Hank Williams sr.) but his star had faded out.
    So he changed his style, dropped the western outfits of the 50’s for a Tuxedo and became a great singer of Country Romantic ballads.
    And it all started with a Kris Kristipherson song.
    You’d be surprise how many singers either saved their careers or started their careers with one of Kris’s songs.
    After Hank sr. Kris us considered by many (including me) as the greatest Vountry Writer of all time.
    I’m very glad I got to see him twice in concert. I know he won’t be with us much longer.
    LOVE your reactions.
