Willie Nelson is a national treasure. He has so many amazing songs. He just conveys so much emotion in every performance. He and Ray Charles have a song together called "Seven Spanish Angels" that is one of the greatest songs ever, in my opinion. The live version is by far the best. And "Always On My Mind" is another of my favorites.

Willie is a real country legend who has been singing & writing songs for over 7 decades. In the 50's he wrote a lot of hit songs for other artists such as "Funny How Time Slips Away", "Hello Walls", "Pretty Paper" & "Crazy". Some of his hit songs are "On the Road Again", "To All The Girls I've Loved Before", "Pancho & Lefty", "Good Hearted Woman", "Remember Me", If You've Got The Money I've Got the Time", "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" etc. Willie was part of the Highwaymen along with Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson & Johnny Cash.

The song was composed in 1926 by Irving Berlin as a last-minute addition to the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. Although the show ran for only 39 performances, "Blue Skies" was an instant success, with audiences on opening night demanding 24 encores of the piece from star Belle Baker.[1] During the final repetition, Ms. Baker forgot her lyrics, prompting Berlin to sing them from his seat in the front row.[

Willie is about as free a musician and singer as I've ever seen. The beat, melody, rhythm, phrasing...he knows it all so well, he feels completely free to play around, it seems almost to the point of ignoring them, but then it becomes obvious that he always does know. He's just having fun.

I have seen Willy several times and in a lot of those times, his sister was part of the band with him, on piano. Seems like she even sang one with him at one of those shows.
Willie was an excellent jazz guitarist in his early days and I think that influences his playing and especially his singing in country music a whole lot.
I can't remember who was older, but as early as when they were 4 and 6 years old, Willie and his sister would play together. She would play piano and sing and he would play guitar and sing. At 4 and 6 years old!
And I have always gotten that impression when I watched him play. It just seems so effortless for him but he puts a lot of emotion and care into what he does, while totally letting his personality show through. He is a real treasure. Not to mention a fantastic songwriter.

Willie Nelson is so unique. No one does it like him. He forces the pocket when he sings. Now that he is older he strays out of it a bit. You can tell whatever band plays with him has been taught to just follow him. In the era this video clip was made his pushing of the musical pocket was just magic. He goes places and does things with his voice you don't expect. He is also a brilliant song writer. He didn't write Blue Skies, but he does such a great performance of the song. You Were Always On My Mind is one of my favorites. He wrote Crazy and Patsy Cline made it famous. ❤️

I saw Barbara Walters interview Willie one time and she said to him, “They say you’ve smoked a lot of marijuana, is that true?” And in typical Willie fashion he replied, “Only enough to fill a silo or two.” Classic. On this topic, Toby Keith did a song called I’ll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again based on an actual experience on Willie’s bus. You have to check it because it will have you rolling on the floor. Great reaction here, as usual. This performance was from a Jerry Lewis telethon. Jerry was a famous comedic actor from the 50s and 60s who did this tv event annually to raise money for muscular dystrophy research and it raised millions every year. MD patients were often referred to as Jerry’s Kids.

If you want to continue on with Willie, may I suggest "Willie Nelson - 1997 - Funny How Time Slips Away". It's a live version with him sitting around with a bunch of country legends (Kris Kristofferson is sitting right next to him). The instrumental shows a really good look at his picking style.
Also, you might want to see the other side of him as well. He has two shorter songs you could double up on... "I Gotta Get Drunk" and "Ten With A Two". You'll love them.
Additionally, the song he opened and closed every concert with is "Wiskey River". The live version is rowdy, fun, and sums him up perfectly.

Fun fact that Willie Nelson is also one of the great American songwriters and wrote Patsy Kline's "Crazy" which you also reviewed. Willie also belongs with those musicians who exits outside genre with their own distinct aura. Willie Nelson is much like Jimmy Buffett in creating a special air of their own.

I heard a female recording artist describe singing a duet with WN. He has an idiosyncratic style of timing and phrasing... and it's entirely random. She said she would listen to him for a while and try to pick-up what he was doing, but it changed on his whim. She just had to keep up. That is the relaxed, easy style you are hearing.

Willie's guitar, Trigger, has a unique sound. Its probably 60-70 yrs old, has been worn down to a big hole he had repaired eventually. He uses nylon strings (like a Classical) and wears a saxophone strap with it instead of a guitar strap.

I wonder what “Trigger” Willie’s guitar would go for in an auction $500 dollar guitar from 1969 . That guitar today by regular Joe would typically sell for between $5,000 and $15,000 but considering the signatures of other singers and hits he has put out on that guitar in 55 years

The guitar's name is Trigger, named after Roy Roger's horse.
Check out "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," if you haven't.
I witnessed him do a scale from high tenor down to baritone and back. I flew for a second.
He really is that calm and happy.
His ranch in Texas is named Luck. He likes to say, "If you're here, you're in Luck. If You're not here, you're out of luck."
He made his second wife very unhappy. He would drink and hit her. One night when he was passed out drunk, she sewed him up into the bedsheets and beat him with a bat. He lost her, but he stopped drinking. Aaand, THAT'S why we now have Willie's Reserve.
    I love Willie Nelson.

I like the version of "Always on My Mind" on an old British show, where it's just him and his guitar Trigger.
I think he sings it perfectly on that live performance. And it sounds way better with just his guitar.

You know how you call Dolly "Auntie"? Willie's my uncle, not really but i wish.
That's his sister Bobby on piano. He said once he was confidant the two of them could put on a good show by themselves with no rehearsal.
