You're still a rare breed my friend, the reason everyone is trying to "recover gold" from scrapping, is because they want "fast money", they have this dream of making huge gold bars out of scrap and selling it for thousands of dollars, and doing so in a week, or a month, etc.... YOU have the exact right idea, and you know what it takes... Had to watch this again! I've been sorting my precious metals over the last few weeks a little more diligently than before, so I wanted to follow up by watching this for the 3rd or 4th time!!! Have a GREAT Day Ben!!!
When i first saw your videos, i described it to a friend as "something that a person "doesn't want to watch" [because you sometimes repeat the same things over and over again] but it should be something every one "should watch". But since then i have watched many of your videos Ben and i can tell you that i am evermore impressed with the way you scrap and even your ways of thinking about scraping because its all based on your real life experiences as someone who "HAS DONE IT". And that is far more meaningful than people who talk about it or just give up after a few months. In any event, good on you Ben. Your channel is far more valuable than most people could ever realize! Much respect for all that you do and make videos on!
Ben you're absolutely wonderful for being quite the knowledgeable resource for anyone and everyone who may or may not necessarily be interested doing this themselves to whatever extent; weather it's a die hard born in the wool out of the fryer and into the pan kinda hardcore scrapping enthusiast to the specific "gold + silver & OTHER VARIOUS prescious metals seekers" type scrappers !!! I myself admittedly over the years I have also come to understand and learn a handful of bits and pieces of information which had quite a wonderful practical application in my specific ways of how I do my scrapping. Blacksmithing is an additional hobby/love of mine Ben. I've done it off and on since the young age of 16, and I'm 39 now. Having all sorts of knowledge of various metalurgy, including the scrapping knowledge gained over the past 3 1/2 years I've actively delved into doing that, I will happily admit that I have experienced multitudes of instances with which all the top 5 money making items thus far have been: (listed highest to lowest) #1 - steel, #2 - #1 & #2 copper wire, #3 - extruded & cast aluminum, #4 battery cores & lead, and lastly #5 brass *clean, dirty, and cast)
I would tend to disagree. It's not in the bank until it is in the bank. When I used to work in retail, deposits were made to the bank 2-3 times a day. It was the policy to get the money in the bank as fast as possible because what happens if there is a disaster? There could be a burglary, a fire, a death, or other natural disaster. I'm cautious about investing so much time into something that you could lose too easily. So I would encourage our friend Ben to consider protecting his investment by processing as much as possible and then maybe safe guarding the precious commodities in bar form and store in a safe place. Buy low sell high. That is definitely easier said than done when investing in commodities. I love the e-waste recycling and totally encouraged by Ben's ideas, just want to make sure he considers the risks of stockpiling.
I always enjoy watching your video's Ben. I like the way you are organized and had broken everything down, separated them and "know" what is in each piece. There might be a book/manual out in the bookstores that details what is in each piece encompassing everything worth keeping in the E-waste business, but i doubt it. So when are going to put out a book on the business Ben? All you need to do is really take a photo of each piece, then put a description of the metal content. Hobbyist E-waste people like me, don't need to know what the component does,we just need to know what part is worth keeping and what is in them. Yeah i like running my fingers through the stuff too..lol. So yeah..get a small E-waste booklet out there and really stack the gold and silver. Cheers!
George from America here again. Soaking up all your videos like a sponge cause I love to depopulate everything and break it all down. That's the most exciting part for me. Can't wait to have as many bins as you Ben. Thanks for teaching me so much. Keep on scrapping mate😁👍
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and all of that experience you have. You are great; here in Spain we do not practice scrapping at all, and new scrappers need someone like you helping us optimizing our methods.
Another good vid Ben, thanks. I think you're spot on. I've been following a similar strategy since I started about three years ago. I sell the steal, copper, Al, boards, etc when I have a reasonable amount and stock pile the gold and silver bearing, tantalum, MLCC's, etc., for the future. Looking forward to putting what I've learned about chemistry to work when I think I have enough. Till then, I keep stocking, watching and learning.
A hammer mill will sort those crystals nicely. I have an old one I picked up when a lab I was working at threw it out but you can find them second hand rather easily. The mill will smash the metal casing to small pieces and the crystal and associated valuable metals inside will completely separate. They tend to contain only gold and silver so it's a simple process to recover the values, and as the mill will have smashed everything into small pieces the chemical process will recover everything quickly and cheaply. Use either an appropriately sized wide mouth beaker or an Erlenmeyer flask if you prefer, place the crushed up crystals into the beaker and pour on just enough concentrated HCL to cover them. Apply a low heat and if there are any base metals present they will be removed (this will mostly be tiny amounts of tin and lead). Once that's done give them a good wash with water until the pH is neutral and then treat with nitric acid to remove the silver, drain off the nitric and again give the remnants a good wash with water until the pH is neutral. Now use Aqua regia to collect the gold (and very rarely platinum). Even with the volume of crystals you have there you won't have to use a lot of chemicals and so it's perfectly economical to recover the metals.
If I filled up a small container of mixed ic's, I'd get several other containers fashioned after watching this awhile back and separated. I'm doing it almost identical to the way you do it, only on a micro level. I've also filled a container of mlcc's so I got another empty one and separated from big mlcc's and small mlcc's. Thanks to you Ben!!!

I'm in the process of building a large tumbler with erosion/crush media ranging from micro abrasive to a 30lb ceramic sphere and a 20lb ceramic pyramid. I believe mechanical processing and separation is the key... or at the very least, space saving storage. Many of the ceramics used in modern electronics are finite resources. It is only a matter of time before before the recycled material, even in base form, become valuable.
Hope you are keeping those buckets well away form the UV as they will break down costing you more in bucket replacement over time than the scrap value u store. Im sure you are doing that but just for others that see this and may not think of the consequence of storing in plastic with even a little incidental sun.
The cost of the bullion premiums in the end may be less than the cost of all the equipment and chemicals and time used to get a few grams of gold. As a dentist I turn in the dental crowns that were extracted or cut off due to decay and the refiner sends me bullion or a check. They have a flat 5% processing fee for their labors. They assay it and send me a check or coins/bars. Scrapping is my part time hobby. I enjoy recycling and taking stuff apart and a little cash in the end. I trade metal for metal (I get gold, silver, lead, I like to buy ammo to shoot!) I scrap small scale, so refining is too much for me. I’ll let someone else do that. Thanks Ben!
Hey bud might wanna check those Perth Mint Gold ingots because a lot of them have shown to be counterfeit. They say you should open them to make sure they are not plated, foiled or filled. Not having the pack doesn't bring down the value of the gold, gold is gold.
I'm just getting into doing this and I think it's a great idea. I've watched videos on how to extract gold from gold fingers and they use a lot of harsh chemicals that I personally don't want to go anywhere near, so I thought to myself that this is the way to go for the time being. It's really cool to discover the amount of precious metals that are in electronics and not just the gold.
For storage you should use 5 gallon pickel buckets. Get them for free behind restaurants. Plus they stand up to uv better than that clear plastic stuff.
i know you have told that you do what you like but you would probably earn more by reselling apple pc and parts. obviously depending on the deal you get from school/company just remove the hard drive. you could also sell memory and cpu's on ebay. the electronics on har drives you might get money for from the large hard drive recovery. you already have a large following here that would purchase something to support you.
Do you check the selling value of all those ICs ? There might be some in there that are worth a lot of money when selling. Especially this DIL-Packages. For example here in Germany a 68k is worth around 30€, a MOS6581 50€ or even the modern version is of the Z80 is still worth 5€ (older versions much more).
yes and recovery figures from some e-waste items show surprising results for PM's other then gold, like platinum and silver, way too much to miss out on
Ive been saving a lot of gold.plated things, some boards some cpus, ic chip, more fingers and other odds and ends. I was thinking about throwing it all in a metal bin and hitting it all with a ditch burner and mixing it around for a while and than making basically a giant ewaste blender and blending it all into a granule form and than hitting it with the chemicals. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think items that house gold inside of them and things i dont feel like taking the time to open up, well, do you think this would be an effective method to essentially release the gold and allowing the chemicals to do their thing?
The thrill of turning unwanted trash into money that you know would have otherwise gone into a fill for future generations to clean up. So satisfying. Imho
Tell me anyone other than a scrapper....you could honestly say to any one... jump in a couple dumpsters and pull out a buried hundred dollar bill and they will.
Have you checked online what the chips/motors/etc sell for? As in specified part, and not "misc junk" Some would likely be willing to pay for the rare ones. Reuse is better than recycling anyway!
Awesome video. I do the same thing I used to try and refine my stuff but it was totally not worth it. Better to sell the other stuff and hoard all the precious metal components. Thanks for the video!

Another issue I am looking at is when refining , there are so many [ mainly copper ] other values in solution when most are just chasing he gold - rough numbers , lets say we have 100lbs of chips with 1% gold , but 70% copper in chemical waste , I do not want to through away the 70% copper ? Thanks again for one of the better scrap videos .
In Sweden the price of transformer and el-motors are almost the same. Transformers are worth more than el-motors. El-motors used to be worth about 10 cents more.

Hey Ben, I watched one of your videos about cdrom drives and you said you weren't sure what was in the readed module but you save them any way. I've taken apart a bunch of them and there are 2 round small gold parts with 2-4 very small gold wires attaching then to the ribbon. I believe these parts are gold, but I've never tested them son I'm not 100% sure. I can send you pics of what they look like. But maybe you can investigate it and let us know please. Thanks buddy.
Yes they are definitely gold plated, I wasn't sure what other precious metals could be in them but yep, those gold bits you see are gold plated, very fiddly to get them but it all adds up
Every time I watch one of these videos I think about the value of the interconnects. Forgetting about the value of the gold, the interconnects (D-Subs, minature phone jacks, USB jacks, etc.). These could be desoldered and reused as new. The value of those components would far exceed the value of the metals you could recover.
I think i rather but my gold instead and continue with dealing with copper wire. Great Ben i washed half of it since i do or deal with boards since i don't find them that much here where i live. Thanks
This seems to be the equivalent of collecting cats to a crazy cat lady. Especially considering you'll be dead before your "future" arrives. Same with the collecting of the novelty gold chips, you can't use them as currency when you need to.
Hi Ben, excellent video as always! Maybe you should consider buying gold coins instead of 24K gold bars in small increments. 20 Francs LMU coins (france or swiss) are quite cheap and have 5,807g fine gold and certainly look much better than the bars.
Not to worry my friend if the government believes there's enough value in it they will first try to tax you if you refuse to pay they'll just come take it all good luck
Gold recovery is the perk of scrapping. (I can go gold panning and get more in less time and not deal with the chemicals) I'm just getting in to scrapping, really only interested in copper and alum for the most part. Steel isn't worth it for me.
Ben, would you be able to process BGA, IC chips and flat packs in the same way? ID rather not seperate them if I can process them all the same way for gold eventually
With recycled materials there are the less mining for virgin materials which makes things more expensive, and I see trouble in the international market because, of how much the US federal reserve has loaned to American banks just in the last 2 weeks.
30.44 I wondered what those things were don't see many of them thought they were s wafer thin ceramic cpu have always crushed then trying to get them off and end up with the gold plated top part lol
For sure they already have the technologies. Just a matter of how technology market changes. I think gold most likely will go down as silicon era is dying. We will approach a crystal and light technology era and precious materials will be those as for lasers.
That's a really difficult question to answer accurately. It all depends on how thick the plating is on the fingers. And which ounce are you referring to? A regular ounce or a Troy ounce? All precious metals are weighed in Troy ounces with everything else is regular ounces.
Too bad no one does videos like this for automotive scrapping. I find way more silver fingers than I do gold fingers in auto electronics. Idk if it's silver or tin plated copper. Fuse boxes are always tin plated copper so I have always assumed that the other connectors are the same.
i was like that, processed motheboards and hunting for gold, lost interest and time... it lays in a pile under my porch, haha. but i collect copper wire and brass when i can get it at work. just piling it up untill i can buy gold. it is easier and faster
why not keeping all the boards maybe in the future we can process these easily with all the metals on , even the scratch board itself with the bondings
Alex - sorry to jump in on Ben, but great to see the next generation getting into scrapping. If you're in the US try looking checking out the ISRAP App. There may be a recycler in your town/city that buys boards and other scrap. There are also some - like Board Sort - that buy via the mail.

all those boards at 11:03 someones been busy keep the videos coming :)
Ben has lots of energy!
Holy shit this is such a great way to get rich!!! Really unbelievable to see what precious stuff people throw away every day!!!
Great advice. Thanks for sharing.
I'm interested to know where to sell this waste??!! I can't find anything locally
I think i rather but my gold instead and continue with dealing with copper wire. Great Ben i washed half of it since i do or deal with boards since i don't find them that much here where i live. Thanks
do you also salvage all the heatsinks of the motherboards to sell on ebay?
This seems to be the equivalent of collecting cats to a crazy cat lady.
Especially considering you'll be dead before your "future" arrives.
Same with the collecting of the novelty gold chips, you can't use them as currency when you need to.
Another element “palladium” is now worth more than gold. So some of those white gold fingers might have a mix of gold and palladium
What can I get from all these waste pieces? Is there a thorough guide for precious metal recovery?
Ben should i try some industrial parks to start out?
Ben, I like your videos good one as always Thank you
I bought 100 Netflix shares at $114 with my recycling money. Netflix is now over $300 now!
Hi Ben, excellent video as always! Maybe you should consider buying gold coins instead of 24K gold bars in small increments. 20 Francs LMU coins (france or swiss) are quite cheap and have 5,807g fine gold and certainly look much better than the bars.

check out bens gold coin vids
Will do!
This is very good information and i want to stabilizer your video for you and have you work for us.
Hey Ben, I'm just wondering, why do you stockpile gold at all? Is it like an investment for you instead of a 401 K, mutual funds, etc?
Not to worry my friend if the government believes there's enough value in it they will first try to tax you if you refuse to pay they'll just come take it all good luck
Gold recovery is the perk of scrapping. (I can go gold panning and get more in less time and not deal with the chemicals) I'm just getting in to scrapping, really only interested in copper and alum for the most part. Steel isn't worth it for me.
Ben, would you be able to process BGA, IC chips and flat packs in the same way? ID rather not seperate them if I can process them all the same way for gold eventually
Great advice, as usual! Ben, is there any value in those silicone looking "chips" embedded in some of the BGA chips? Thanks
not much in them but worth keeping still, I just throw the crumbled silicon in a jar when I crush them out
Great advice, I've been stockpiling for 4 years
I'm at 4:11, so maybe you do this, but wouldn't a chemical processing method be cheaper and easier than applying heat?
great stacking video ...
Love it! How can you make a real living doing this?
In all the years ive been scrapping, ive never seen so many crystals in one place
With recycled materials there are the less mining for virgin materials which makes things more expensive, and I see trouble in the international market because, of how much the US federal reserve has loaned to American banks just in the last 2 weeks.
One word: Legendary!😎
30.44 I wondered what those things were don't see many of them thought they were s wafer thin ceramic cpu have always crushed then trying to get them off and end up with the gold plated top part lol
I paused it to comment they actually are tiny ceramics next time I will try get one off whole bless you 🍀🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I love this idea
A typical hoarders logic... "someday it might be worth something".... lol... It's OK, I'm a hoarder also :)
For sure they already have the technologies. Just a matter of how technology market changes.
I think gold most likely will go down as silicon era is dying. We will approach a crystal and light technology era
and precious materials will be those as for lasers.
Hi How many grams/ounces of gold plated pins do you need to create a one ounce
gold ingot? cheers
That's a really difficult question to answer accurately. It all depends on how thick the plating is on the fingers. And which ounce are you referring to? A regular ounce or a Troy ounce? All precious metals are weighed in Troy ounces with everything else is regular ounces.
Hey Ben, where do you get rid of your plastics and other waste that you can't sell/refine?
I don't get much plastic as I don't scrap out printers but I give it to my board buyer who deals with it.
Too bad no one does videos like this for automotive scrapping.
I find way more silver fingers than I do gold fingers in auto electronics. Idk if it's silver or tin plated copper. Fuse boxes are always tin plated copper so I have always assumed that the other connectors are the same.
i was like that, processed motheboards and hunting for gold, lost interest and time... it lays in a pile under my porch, haha. but i collect copper wire and brass when i can get it at work. just piling it up untill i can buy gold. it is easier and faster
good job, 100% Scrapper.
Good start..like asmr..😁
why not keeping all the boards maybe in the future we can process these easily with all the metals on , even the scratch board itself with the bondings
hey Ben I am 13 and I have loved your Chanel for months and I was just wondering were do u sell your mother bords
Alex - sorry to jump in on Ben, but great to see the next generation getting into scrapping. If you're in the US try looking checking out the ISRAP App. There may be a recycler in your town/city that buys boards and other scrap. There are also some - like Board Sort - that buy via the mail.
Ernest Petzrick thank you so much but I live Victoria
I have a private buyer for bulk qty's but I do buy boards from scrappers in small qty's
I was just about to ask, coincidentally i googled scrapping motherboards in NSW and you came up Ben!
amazing .that's a lot of work to collect
Gold bars after recovery and refining
