Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department responds to a boat on fire docked in a marina

- JFRD responded to a boat fire in a marina called in by a cyclist riding in the area.
These types of fires pose numerous problems that were quickly handled by a strong command presence.
First issue is accessing the boat, checking for occupants while also checking exposures. Because it is docked in a marina, often times, these fires take multiple boats out at once.
Next, getting a hose stretched from the engine all the way to the boat. About 450 feet of 2 1/2 inch hose was laid down with a gated Y on the end. From there, an 1 3/4" hose is extended to the boat with the option of a second line for exposures.
This is a time consuming process and command called for extinguishers to knock down as much as the fire as possible in the meantime. The extinguishers seem futile, but they do buy some time for the exposures.
Access is limited with fairly narrow walkways to all the boat slips with slip and trip hazards all around in limited visibility because of darkness and smoke. You can hear command in the video multiple times saying "don't fall in".
We are happy to report that there were no injuries at this fire...the damage was kept to the one boat (possibly minor heat damage to the two exposure boats)...the cause of this fire is being investigated by the bureau of fire, arson, and explosives investigations.

There must be a reason they didn't/couldn't move their boat away. The heat could do damage to fiberglas let alone the potential for an explosion.

Nice, quick knockdown of this one, once they got the hose-lay and water on the fire...Glad no injuries; those marina fires can be nasty (saw a number of them in Seattle some years ago)!

Its a shame that the boat was on fire. It looked like a really nice one. The firefighters did an excellent job fighting the fire, and get it put out quickly. Fantastic footage. Have a great day ❤️🙂⚘️.

Looks like an extremely dangerous fire to fight. If a firefighter fell into the water they would be in big trouble.
We train for that....recruits have to go in water in gear to know what to do.
