Postmodern Jukebox, originally known as Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, is a rotating musical collective founded by New York based pianist Scott Bradlee in 2011. Postmodern Jukebox is known for reworking popular modern music into different vintage genres, especially early 20th century forms such as swing and jazz.

The older PMJ videos, like this one, are kind of legendary. They were all recorded in Scott Bradlee's tiny apartment, before the whole project moved into PMJ Manor. Since the drummer sits in the back most of the time, he was usually hidden by other musicians. People used to make fun of this all the time.
The background singer on the right, Robyn Adele Anderson, also sang lead on some PMJ covers. She also had her own channel doing something similar over there.

PMJ is ON tour now. Check the list, theres a lot of dates. It’s usually about 6-8 singers changing every song and rotating twice over throughout the concert. Just excellent sound and performance. scott bradley started this in his apartment w a new video everyweek. Until he got kicked out then had a tour that sold out immediately without an album

I remember watching a documentary, for this video Scott instructed the "back up singers" to act "blaise and underpaid", LOL, Scott IS PMJ. He does the orchestration and hires who he thinks will deliver what He wants for a piece. Scott was, (and might still be), a musical director on Broadway.... I've been following them for years, from back when Robin was his primary vocalist.

PMJ is the piano player, Scott Bradlee. He started the thing in his apartment with the woman (Robyn Adele Andersen) closest to the center as the main singer. The drummer and bass players are also still with them, but not in every video. The first thing I saw from them was Thrift shop done as a ragtime song. They played around with other styles, and brought in some guest singers from time to time. The "studio" you see here is the living room of Scott's New York apartment. The person next door was apparently not a fan.
When the channel started to take off, they moved to California and drew some other singers. Then they started going on tours. At one point they had three different concert tours running on three continents, all with a different cast (obviously), because they have that many singers and musicians that rotate in and out of the lineup. They also had a residency gig in Vegas one summer.
The audio recorded for the video is the audio released on the record/CD. On one song, you can hear the singer's earrings clinking from time to time, and it comes through on the Spotify track as well.
The singers include former contestants from the various signing shows, Broadway singers, cabaret performers, Wayne Brady even did one. They also put out an annual contest for someone to join the cast each fall. Some singers only do a song or two, some come back again and again. Many have unique voices or styles that lend themselves one particular type of music, so they'll save certain songs until that singer comes available.
Also, be on the lookout for Tambourine Guy. His first appearance was in Roar. You';ll know him if you see him.

Mike Geier from Atlanta portrays Puddles, the depressed, self-pitying clown. He is 6'8" (!) and has been around forever, usually performing as characters, not himself. Puddles does a great version of "Hallelujah," by Leonard Cohen. As Elvis, Geier does a rousing version of (Marie's the Name of) His Latest Flame.

Lorde just is not in a hurry, that's all. She released a 2nd album in 2017 that went to #1, and released another in 2021, that was delayed by the pandemic. She also put together the soundtrack for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1". So she's around, she just works at her own pace.

    • @TSIRKLAND
      @TSIRKLAND Год назад

This isn't a parody, it's just a cover. They didn't change the words, they didn't change the instrumentation to something funny like car horns and alarm clocks, just a simple jazz arrangement with all acoustic instruments. Puddles does a few silly moves and facial expressions, but that's just his character; his singing was spot on.
So as a big fan of parody music from greats like Weird Al (who did do a parody version, titled "Foil" which is awesome), and Spike Jones and many others, I just felt the need to correct your use of that word. This is not a parody, just a cover.
      Thanks!

Puddles is a great performer, and he is a relic from my era... but we needed him, and he does us well... Postmodern Jukebox is a musical collective known for reimagining popular contemporary songs in different vintage or retro styles. Founded by pianist and arranger Scott Bradlee in 2011, the group gained popularity through their RUclips channel, where they upload videos of their unique cover songs.
Postmodern Jukebox's signature style involves taking modern hits from a wide range of genres, such as pop, rock, R&B, and hip-hop, and giving them a nostalgic twist by rearranging them into vintage styles like swing, jazz, ragtime, doo-wop, and Motown. The group collaborates with a rotating cast of talented musicians and vocalists, showcasing their diverse musical skills and interpretations.

Postmodern Jukebox can be described in one word as "ironic." Their shtick is to reinterpret modern pop songs into other, often older genres -- lounge, jazz, swing, bluegrass. This video with Puddles the Clown is one of their older ones, and the production values are not as slick as the newer stuff. Still, I loved the rawness of this early stuff. There are videos.of Puddles basically wandering into a room, hanging up a sign, and singing.
You might have overlapped time in Atlanta with Puddles. He performed here for years, in various guises. Each Christmas for years he performed as Elvis at the Variety Play house in Little Points in a Blue Christmas show. He also had a residency in Vegas for years, and performed in a Portland, Ore., opera company. The singer, Mike Geier, is 6'8". So, yes, tall!

    • @TSIRKLAND
      @TSIRKLAND Год назад

I know that clowns are not everyone's cup of tea, so I understand the comment "once you get past the clown outfit."
But as a personal fan of clowns in general, I have no reason to "get past" the clown outfit. The clown outfit and persona is a very well thought out schtick that allows Mike Geier (the man behind the makeup) to sing songs in ways that a straight-up regular person could not pull off. The same guy could sing the same song with the same voice, and do it very well. But Puddles is different from Mike; they're two different performers.
So I encourage people to not enjoy his voice "in spite of" the clown outfit, or after having "gotten over" the clown outfit, but to take in and appreciate the whole package. The voice, the outfit, the makeup, the mannerisms, the character, the choices.
Almost every performer puts on a costume, a persona, when they perform- and it shapes their performance. Some more than others. Prince. David Bowie. Elton John. Lizzo. Lady Gaga. You're not meant to "get past" their style choices, you're meant to take in the whole performance. Maybe it's an escape from themselves, allowing them to do things on stage that "themself" could not do. Maybe it's to reflect an aspect of themselves that they want to accentuate in that moment- a specific part of their whole. Maybe it's a phase, a transformation or metamorphosis, a continuous evolution, constantly changing who they are and who they present to the world, on stage, in private, etc. One doesn't need to "get past" Prince's purple velvet frock coat, or Bowie's androgynous Ziggy Stardust, or Elton's wild glasses and sequined jumpsuits, or Liz's bedazzled nails, or Gaga's wild outfits. It's part of the show, part of the experience.
Personally, I love Puddles' whole thing, from the voice to the makeup to the outfit to the everything.
So I intend no disrespect to your comment. I understand that for many people, clowns in general are not their thing- so they need to concentrate on the voice, and get past the "weird" bit that maybe they don't understand, or whatever. And I know you meant no disrespect to Puddles by your comment; you clearly appreciate his vocal talents. But I do encourage you, and everyone, to embrace the clown as part of the experience, not as separate from the experience.
      Respectfully,
      -My 2¢
      PS
I agree; Puddles' duet with Haley is stupendous! Mad World with Post Modern Jukebox: Definitely a must-see (and hear)!

I believe Puddles is 6' 8" without the crown on his head. PMJ is a musical collective, so one organization with a lot of members who rotate in & out - they will have two different casts go on tour simultaneously in different locations. I'm not sure why the backing vocalists' mic is so high & far away from them, but this was one of their earlier videos, so maybe they just hadn't bought enough mics yet. Both girls are excellent vocalists and have a number of songs with PMJ where they sing lead. Puddles was on AGT, but well *after* this video. For AGT, his first song was "Chandelier" by Sia, a song that he also original did with PMJ.

You said the background vocalists aren't "doing it" for you. This was the early days of PMJ. This was recorded in Scott Bradley's apartment, which he got kicked out of later, due to neighbors' complaints about the noise.

The message of this song is deep and wise beyond what should be expected from an 18 year old. So I would not be surprised if she was one of those that was just like " f&%$ this I'm out."

As others have said, Puddles is the tall gentleman, Postmodern Jukebox is the rest. (I understand that it's actually a loose sort of organization of about fifty artists who come in for various songs). If you'd like a bit more Puddles, I think my two favourites are "Don't Give Up" (a Peter Gabriel cover) and "Come Sail Away" (a Styx cover). The latter makes you feel good. The former helps you wallow in Weltschmerz.

You brought up two things that kinda coincide. The microphone was high above the backup singers to give them a more distant sound. Incidentally that might also be part of why you weren't feeling them. I think Next you should look up Mad World, Chandelier, or Burn

I'm really surprised you've never heard of Puddles considering you're from Atlanta.
He's from there, and there's a giant mural of him on the side of Sister Louisa's Ping Pong Emporium.

I love PMJ but this just was a bit much for me. I really just didn't care for it. The ending was humorous but the rest just fell a little flat for me, just my opinion y'all. But I thank you for sharing your time and comments. See ya on the next one. Peace✌

PostmodernJukebox has been posting on RUclips for years with a variety of talent doing covers in their own classy look way and their own arrangements usually. Some dancing, too. Everybody has many favorites. You need to watch some away from the channel, JUST ENJOY YOURSELF.

You should check out Postmodern Jukebox... they do modern songs in other decade's styles... I won't link so you can look it up and give it a fresh view if you want, but Wayne Brady came in with them and did 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson in a 30's style.
