- Less than truckload freight or (LTL) is used for the transport of smaller sized shipments that are otherwise too small for the use of a full truckload. LTL freight is something every freight broker should understand as another value add to their customers.
In this video we are going to cover everything you need to know about LTL freight. How does it work, what constitutes an LTL shipment and most importantly, where do you find LTL freight?

* Brokers know how to handle the claim process. Very common for shipments to get damaged in LTL transit. Can help them get their money back

YOu made mention to Philly and Jersey a bit and I was wondering if you are in one of these areas? I am a new Broker, I started back in September and I get a good amount of business, nothing to brag about, but if you are close by, lets meet for lunch or a beer and maybe I can pick your brain a little. If not totally understandable. I am just trying to be really good in this Industry. Once again, I appreciate the information and I will do my very best to reach out to some of the General Carriers to see if they can assist me in moving these two LTL loads. How does cross-docking work? As a carrier, how do we know which is ok for cross-docking and which is not? How do you make sure that all pallets fit in the truck? When you said 12 pallets, what type of truck was it referred to? Because I know that in a 53 ft Dry Van, 22 pallets are considered FTL. Thanks in advance!
12 pallets would be a head load on a 28' (pup) trailer because the driver may be asked to pick up 2 or 3 more on the way in back to the terminal. The dock workers will remove the last pick ups and the company will send out the 12 pallets on the 28' trailer by itself to the consignee.
This video was amazingly helpful. But Im trying to figure out exactly how to quote class of LTL pallets.

Hey Luis, Just wanted to understand the following
i) Are LTL shipments carried out on contractual agreements with the Carrier/Broker from the Shippers end. If Yes, then could you list a few charges which form a part of an LTL contract
ii) And if its not on contractual agreements with the Shipper and more of a Ad-Hoc request then how does the charging mechanism take place? Are there any penalty clauses for late pick up/ delayed delivery etc., or the Carrier just charges on the weight of the shipment
iii) Thirdly wanted to understand if having a TMS will actually help resolve the problem of LTL?
1. Not really with brokers Brokers can make contracts with LTL companies based on volume but right now a lot of LTL carriers arent taking on new brokers which has been an issue.
2. The only customers I move LTL for are ad-hoc Im not really interested in low profit high volume work especially for LTL that has a high failure rate. But to answer your questions the LTL carrier charges you (the contract holder) for everything outside the original scope and there is no way to get out of paying it unless you appeal it and prove them wrong. This can result in thousands in additional charges for something as simple as a freight reclassification.
3. Having a TMS won't solve any LTL related issues unless it is directly linked with the carriers TMS which none are.

I'm confused on how much to charge for a pallet shipment should I charge by pallet per pallet? If so how much per pallet? Or should I charge by combined weight?
I would charge all in based on your cost just mark it up. All depends on how much you want to make. I don’t use profit percentages for ltl I use whole numbers. I won’t do anything for a minimum of $100 in my pocket and if that doesn’t work with the customer it’s ok with me

You have to try to set up accounts with common carriers to move true LTL. Estes old dominion will cover 95% of your LTL requirements

Thank you! No they are not. An ltl account manager would work directly for the common carriers and assist in managing the ltl accounts. An ltl freight broker would be assigned an ltl account manager. Basically just a different level in the chain.

Does LTL offer the liftgate service to residential areas? Does that include with the shipping? Or a separate charge?
Yes just the liftgate and residential service alone can add 200-250 to the standard cost.
I confirmed with an eBay seller that the liftgate charge is definitely included in the shipping cost. Does that sound about right? Or a sale move?

You can post as a partial for a low rate or you have to use an ltl platform like worldwide express

Luis if possible can you please share some of the best Reefer LTL carriers and dry van LTL carriers company. Please luis share if you know some of these LTL carriers both are required Reefer and Dry vans
I don’t do anything with reefer LTL never will it’s a waste of time for brokers for dry van ltl I reveal these carriers in my program

It’s more of a program to be honest because you get support direct from me in the group community to help you implement and solve problems/respond to customers as you go. It buries all the other courses really. You can probably binge watch all the lessons in a week but the methods and even modes that I teach aren’t in anyone else’s material. It’s also guaranteed for 30 days
Is there any ltl you can do that don’t go to hubs? Like an expedited shipment
You can put it on a dryvan who is accepting partials. But you can’t control when it will deliver and you are at increased liability because the drivers pretty much can do whatever they want. I have had horrible experiences not using an ltl carrier. You save money but lost peace of mind.

I do not that’s a very general request. Just to give you an idea if we do 1000 shipments in a month we are probably using 950 different carriers.

Not quite. Ltl is cheaper
