    Yeah, it makes total sense in this ultra high gain application! The Neo Creamback vs. Neo V-Type video was ear-opening.
    I didn't realise it before, I kept wrongly comparing it to the M65, but that's a different colour. It's harder to use the M65 with this much gain and keep it tight enough.

    Neo Cream is more aggressive than other Cream series speakers because of the nature of the Neo magnets. They do not lose magnetic strength with the increase of power.
    To make a powerful speaker you have to have strong magnetic field, voice coil that can take heat and cone that will be able to transfer energy to air. Basket has to be strong enough to support it all. Neo magnets are in family of the rare earth magnets and they are very strong.
    Every type of the magnet used in speakers has it's own character and rules. Sure construction and some tricks can mitigate part of the thing but can't change the nature of things. For example are they sensitive to heat or mechanical stress or how do they react on everchanging and strong electromagnetic field.
    We know that Alnico magnets have a lot of give and they will saturate because of the eddy currents. We know that extreme heat will demagnetise the Neo magnets.
    What is important to us as people who want tone is how do they work in our cabinets.
    Alnico magnet speakers have more give. They will compress. They do not need huge mass to achieve strong magnetic field.
    Ceramic magnet speakers will also compress depending on size of their magnets effect will be higher or lower. To achieve strong motor they need big mass.
    Neo magnet speakers have smallest amount of give. They will not compress as much as any other speaker type.
    That is a reason why small speaker like Neo250 Copperback can do similar job as EVM 12L when equipped with very similar cone and voice coil.
    So yeah magnet type will do that. That is why the Neo Cream sounds and behaves different then other Cream series speakers. This gives them bright character and aggressivity.
    But magnet is not the only thing. There are speakers with a small magneet and big voice coil. V Type for example has 70 Watt power handling but small magnet. This will cause it to saturate more and give more. This will make it smoother at the higher level.
    Some speakers will have lighter cone and with power cone it self will saturate. To light and it will cause cone cry. It's very complex matter.
    Look at the original Greenback M. Low power handling voice coil, ceramic magnet that has give as well. Cone with right weight that will saturate as well. Perfect storm scenario for early rock sounds. I just wonder was it a fluke or was it all in designers head :)
    There are so many ways to manipulate the tone of the speaker and designers are finding more and more about it and we are lucky that they are being able to make new great speakers.

    Neo Creamback is probably one of the biggest discoveries I made a couple of years back. It has the exact peak in the upper mids I was looking for in a V30 replacement. Its light weight also made my life easier for gigs.
    You can also hear how it made its way into an independent mix here: ruclips.net/video/8J7hM4qRTL4/видео.html
    Go to 1:54, left guitar plays on its own. On the right side we have Greenbacks and a single coil guitar.

    Would be great to do a comparison of:
    V30+G12M vs G12M+G12Neo vs V30+G12Neo vs V30+G12H.
    There are lots of speaker comparison videos but I don't think I have seen a comparison of speaker blends even though its very popular to do that in a 212 or 412.
    Even a lot of zilla cabs often mix and match. Listening to the individual speakers just doesnt tell you how they will sound blended.
    I would do it in two steps, like direct comparison. two SM57s, same gain. and then normalised to match volumes. cos the first will tell you how it will sound in the room with two speakers that dont necessarily have the same sensitivity. and the second will show how they match when recorded and blended. Maybe even a room mic would be good. and mixed in a 2x12 and 4x12. Yeah I know its a lot of work but it would be an amazing reference comparison!

    Could you edit a video comparing the Greenback with the Neo-Cream? Just an A/B comparison with these samples, to really highlight the differences between those two.
    Edit: I opened both videos in different tabs, tried doing the A/B myself, and I'm shocked at how similar they are. It's like the exact same overall character/EQ curve, except the Neo-Cream is very in-your-face, immediate, tight, and lively, while the Green is softer, squishier, spongier. It's almost like the Neo is the Green post-production, with a studio EQ and compression added to it, much like Nolly was talking about. Now I kinda wanna hear the Neo A/B-ed with the Cream 75H 😅

    I like these Creamback Neos. I was checking out some Orange PPC212 cabs for my Orange Rocker 30. And I thought the vertical closed back with Neos was the best for
    higher-gain. But I preferred the V30 closed back slightly for cleans, and maybe for crunch. (the open back maybe won on cleans, but not good otherwise). But the savings in weight makes it very compelling. over 30 kilos with V30s, under 20 kilos with the Creamback Neos. Would like a small lightweight Zilla cab for my Victory V40, maybe thinking V30s though, for cleans with that head.

  • @CraigFlowersMusic
    @CraigFlowersMusic 9 дней назад +1

    What do you think it is? I'm thinking the flux density of neodymium being far higher than that of ceramics which is in turn higher than that of alnico. Which would lead to the logical conclusion that, alnico being more compressed and fat generally than ceramic speakers, neo speakers would presumably be even less compressed and even more tight. So it stands to reason from there, that if your signal is already limiting and you need all the clarity and control, neo would be best. Just like how I might opt for a neo creamback over a vintage JBL or EV for distortion, I would opt for the vintage over a neo for cleans. I have a couple M creambacks, they're just so good I haven't really looked at the other creambacks in depth lol

      I think it's for whatever works best for what you are doing really. It's a shame people don't get to sit down and hear different speakers with their gear. I've been tempted to yoink the magnet off a v30 and plonk a neo magnet on there to see what would happen.

    I wouldn't call a V30 fizzy. I call it "cakey". They have kind of a soft playing texture, they're neither dark nor bright--but the frequency where the high-mids are most prevalent are a little darker and seem to really sit in a great place to grab single-note definition. The downside is that makes it more of a LEAD playing speaker, to my ears. It's so mid-centric. I'll talk a lot of crap about V30s, but really, they're one of the easiest speakers to get a good recording out of, so it's no wonder they've dominated the speaker landscape for 30 years. Still, I couldn't use them exclusively, there has to be something with a little more cut and firmness on the bottom for a metal rhythm. The bottom end has to be RIPPING-firm. Obviously, that's just preference talking...PLENTY of musicians are getting great tones with nothing but V30s in their cabs. It's just I, personally, wouldn't favor it. It's the SM57 of speakers...I like them, but only when anchored by something else.
    And that EV12L IMMEDIATELY sounded like Zakk Wylde. Trippyyyyyyyy.

    • @ZillaCabs
      @ZillaCabs  9 дней назад +3

      I'm not sure about that one, the low end need to be tight but it still needs to sit forward in the mix, a lot of bass speaker don't have the presence... I love the BN12-300S for baritone but it doesn't tend to sit forward in the mix.

    • @D1570R73D
      @D1570R73D 9 дней назад

      @@ZillaCabs A lot don't, I agree. However, most metal guitarists don't care/want/need that extra presence. A bass speaker cuts way down on the fizz while still producing good midrange and "acceptable" highs. I use the Weber Bass 15 and still get just as much mids/highs as I hear in modern metal mixes. Prog metal would miss the presence for sure, but let's be honest, prog metal is a small subset of metal as a whole.
      It also could be a microphone issue, an SM57 is so widely used, but doesn't reproduce good upper mids and highs.
      You could just make a split 4x12 with bass speakers in the bottom and these creambacks or w/e else in the top. Wire in a basic crossover and you'll get all the chug and weight plus as much crispy clarity as you want. Call it the "Chug n' Chime" cab haha.
