- The Norfolk and Western Railway was well known for its continued use of steam locomotives into 1960 when it finally switched over completely to diesel almost ten years after some other railroads had done so. Join me as we wath some N&W steam locomotives in action as they handle their trains along the Western North Carolina Railroad, the club layout of the Northern Virginia Model Railroaders in Vienna, Virginia.

2-8-0 #753, Roundhouse (Customized) w/ Tsunami 2 Steam
Love the realism with the mallet needing a double tender.👌
The second is only for water it is called an aux tender not a double tender
I love N&W steam. I had the honor of taking the throttle for a bit on the 611 back in the early 80's but my favorite is and always has been the Y class.
Beautiful layout and locomotives, sound makes such a difference.
Superb! Incredibly detailed layout, truly wonderful. The whole production is 'Speilbergesque'. It was a Joy to watch. I admire the effort required to make that film along with the truly beautiful modelling skills.
The most beautiful, HO scale, model railroad display, I have ever seen (and I've seen alot)!!! The digital camera, and the sound effects, does the rest. The opening intro, looked like a real-life picture. Wonderful👍👏👏!!
1 of the best that I have seen in a long time, please keep them coming, Old Master Gunnery SGT USMC
Nicely done,,great design and details,,some details are really outstanding,,thanks for sharing.,,😊
Fantastic Layout! The entire video was great! Thanks for sharing.
Good video, Jim. I enjoyed the segment with the local, nice sounds on it.
What r you running Broadway limited
Now, see this is what I love. A beautiful layout with steam. I've got no interest in seeing Diesels. I want steam, and a beautiful layout and if I get that, I'm a happy guy.
😂🎉😢@2@2@
Very nice layout, all you need is
two figures, Ed King in a tower
and O. Winston Link beside the
tracks!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The Norfolk & Western rr had an impressive variety of steam power during the steam era and it is impressive observing footage of N&W articulated locomotives hauling coal trains. The N&W had some of the best performing types of articulated steam power that they used in freight service consisting of their A and Y class engines.
i personally would love to get back into the model railroad but i only have 2 box cars from my only model railway set i had gotten for Christmas years ago
WOAH...❤❤❤
Can I feature you in a song remake of 'Cargo movin' people'? I love this!🎉🎉🎉
A wonderful layout, Thanks for presentation, from Germany
I would love to get DCC sound fitted models, but they’re so dang expensive! Brilliant models, set, and sound! Truly lovely!
I recommend going to local swap meets and looking for bargains. You hve a better than even chance of picking up a steamer with sound far below retail cost.
@@jimtrack3786 There’s one problem with that. I live in a dead spot of anything train related. *thats goes for models and real trains too*
Beautiful layout.
A wonderful train set and layout! I love the N&W.
Stunning layout
Beautiful layout
Brilliant tour of your beautiful layout Jim. Really well done
This layout rocks.
Two words Awe Inspiring.
Really nice! Thanks for sharing!!!
A very nice video and layout. I have plans to expand my own HO scale layout, though I don't believe mine will be quite as large as this.
I’m not gonna lie, whilst I did enjoy watching the steam engines I was also fascinated by the interurban railway that seemed to also follow a similar route to the N&W. I’d love to see that in operation.
While it will have to wait until some of the more experienced fellow members can repair some issues with the wires, I do plan to do a video on the Traction line on the club layout.
@@jimmylambert8709 fantastic, I’m always had a soft spot for interurbans.
@@jimmylambert8709 And to think, I made this comment before the interurban video came out. And even before tea and moonshine.
Very excellent and cool train
Oh... My... So wonderful 😊 thank you very much. I drive växel ström you know 😢
My favorite Railroad The Norfolk&Western ❤
My 2 personal favorite steam engine are Jclass 611 and Aclass 1218
Very, very nice.
cool layout
love the video!
I want to see that J-class run through the layout. Beautiful engine
My original plan was to have her running, but I discovered a cracked gear the day I filmed this. She's in the process of being repaired, so maybe there will be a sequel to this video....
I’m not complaining since this is a wonderful layout with wonderful locomotives but the 2-8-0 with local freight has an incorrect road number it should be 4-7 if it is a G1 class which lasted into the end of steam with 6 and 7 being preserved anyway great video!
Good looking layout. What's the minimum radius? Looks pretty realistic, even with that Y6b.
Excellent layout! But why are C&O signals present? N&W used CPL signals.
This was filmed on the club layout of the Northern Virginia Model Railroaders in Vienna VA. The layout models an area of North Carolina, but aside form the signals seems to fit N&W power (among others) very nicely.
The decoder sounds on the A class aren’t the best. It sounds more like a diesel than a steam locomotive, and the whistle sounds like a horn. Despite that, the rest of the layout, engines, and overall look and sound are still great.
Too bad that nobody has the last American steam Locomotive Norfolk & Western #244.
It was built in 12/53 and it was inservice for 4 1/2 years until its retirement in March of 1958.
But then it was sold for scrap metal.
Is the front pilot of that A Class bouncing up and down?
It seems to be. My A has been like that ever since I got it. I just chalked it up to the forces involved with a swiveling powered engine unit doing funny things.
Mine does the same thing. I believe it's just how BLI made it. As long as the track work is good it'll run without issue.
I really enjoyed this video. Especially the local freight with the 2-8-0 pulling it and the hooter steam whistle.
0:07. Is it just me, or is the pilot bouncing?
❤
I LOVE THIS VIDIO! IVE WATCHED IT 3 TIMES, LOVE ITS PRESENTION, LIKE A DOCUMENTRY. JUST ONE COMMENT, NOT BEING A SMART ALEC, THE MALLETS WHISTLES SOUNDS MORE LIKE A GODZILLA CRY THAN FROM A LICOMOTIVE.
Everything is perfect, except for coupling cars. Do it gently man! And don't push the cut!

… but thats H0 or smaller, …
everybody speaks about Problems, jerky run-up,
no scaleconform tracks, wagons and locos are not in quality scale,
they drive, brake or accelerate too fast, and there are unnaturally much tracks.
