dude, what are you on about? The 'killer feature' for iPad Pro is make it usable as a professional device, like its marketed as. It's got better hardware than my macbook Air, it costs waaay more, but I can't use it to do my job. The OS needs to do multitasking properly, long running tasks should work in the background. Files app needs to be able to reliably copy files. External display support needs an overhaul, with options for display scaling, resizing the dock. It should be capable of playing more than one audio stream. I should be able to use more than 4 windows! It should be able to handle external cameras and mics in an external dock without crashing. Stage manager needs huge work, it should be intuitive to use. The list is massive. Yes, I want to be able to do things on it I can do on macOS. That's not unreasonable with this hardware at these prices.

In order to do your job you have to play more than one audio stream? I’ve never heard the request before. How can you listen to multiple audio streams at the same time?
Is your external monitor support not working? What should be overhauled about taking whats on your iPad and putting it on a monitor?
If you have an iPad Air which I assume you can do your work on, why are you trying to do that on an iPad? I’m really trying to understand how the things you mentioned would allow you to “do your work” on it and why you can do work on it now.

Not everyone wants their iPads to be a Mac. I do not use stage manager, and the files app works fine. You want a Mac not an iPad and that’s fine. The MacBook Air is iPad Pro specs, and runs Mac OS. Also the keyboard is better and works on your lap better.
The iPad isn’t perfect, I still need to use my Mac for fonts. The iPad is a horrible form factor for proper Final Cut and blender. So my Mac Studio is staying anyway.
The iPad is a small device and it’s mostly good for focused work. You wanna computer on the go, it exists. The iPad for what I use it for is perfect, and I can even push the M4 and still have bigger projects hit the layer limit in procreate. Because you can’t use the power, it just means it’s not for you, and Apple’s profit margins is none of our concern.

But on the other hand, I can understand people feeling frustrated that spending over a grand on an iPad still wouldn’t allow you to do certain things like running apps in the background. Apple need to solve for 4-5 use cases of the iPad using iPadOS - 1 - Everyman user - here apple needs to make it easy to open a file in your chosen app from the filesystem - eg press and hold for context menu, can now open the file in the app of choice - rather than open the app then find the file
2 - creators - these people need access to the extra ram and improved filesystem behavior - file compression, file transfer - should work in background and have a progress bar, maybe in a Dynamic Island - being able to tag files and auto create directory’s would be nice too
3 - podcasters - these guys need to be able to separate audio streams from zoom, FaceTime, select where they want the audio to come from
4 - people who use peripherals and external monitors - here we need to be able to format a drive, add a microphone, external webcam - support 2 monitors, have the new tiles feature in stage manager , maybe run more than 4 apps in each center stage, easily add and remove an app to a stage or run multiple instances of the same app in different stages more easily

Why M4 in the new iPad?
Why do I need such power in an iPad if no app can really make use of it?
They went really well with iPhone Chips in iPads for many years and now switched to Mac-Chips without a good reason and a usecase. It just feels about making money by forcing people to still buy both - Mac and iPad - with totally overpowered chips.
Those aren’t bad decisions - it’s just bad to not go the way till the end. Everything feels not rounded up. And there I feel with all complaints.
There are several of those bad circumstances floating around. For example has the A16 a faster neurale engine than the M2 - but no AI for the 14 Pro. It’s a Cook-Time 🤑, not the the former futuristic Jobs-Apple we all loved.

Sorry to say that you might have missed the big issue while you concentrated on building a defense line.
So AI is the big new thing and the M4 Chip is even better tailored to it than the M1 or M2.
The fact that the computing is done either on the equipment in your hand is good for privacy.
Even when it goes out to dedicated cloud services of Apple it seems well kept private. And if it goes outside of this you as the user can choose to ok or nok it.
What I miss is some information on what to do if I want to buy a new iPad.
Decision on size comes down to personal preference - decision done.
Decision on iPad Air or iPad Pro comes down on whether whether I prefer the new screen and / or the M4 over the M2 and me willing to put down the money for it - decision done.
But when it comes down on how much additional money I spend on memory there is no mention anywhere on what memory size the M4 engine may profit from…
Do I scape up the additional money for an upgrade to 512 GB, 1 TB or even 2 TB??? Or is the M4 engine performance just as good with 256 GB? Some background on that was definitely the information I was hoping for.
That there where only limited showcases on what it can do was expected as this was a developer event and the use cases (hopefully) will be getting developed and made available later this year. But do I now better wait purchasing the expensive iPad Pro to later this year or early next year because I have no clue how to „futureprove“ any purchase for the next 4+ years???
That is what annoyed me after the event was over the absolutely most.

I upgraded to M4 from the M1, and I have to say it was mainly for the camera repositioned right 😂 The ipad is my daily driver, but I use the entire apple ecosystem all the time. It’s probably my favorite tech item.
I love the M4, for what it is. But there’s still a part of me that feels disappointed, I really thought there would be another reason for such a jump in processor power that would be unveiled during WWDC. I guess I was expecting something unique to the Ipad but…. No.
My entire workflow is already seamless on Ipad, I don’t feel limited or constrained in any way, so I’m good.

I thought it was the worst WWDC ever. I wonder how many people were really all that excited about AI or Apple's Intelligence? I may not see a use case for where I need AI but who knows, maybe it will surprise me later on its usefulness. I was very bummed when there was no new hardware announcement like the M4 coming into some Macs or a new iPad mini. I also questioned why the some of the features are exclusive to the A17 Pro only for iPhone 15 Pro. That means that the regular iPhone 15 or 14 Pro doesn't get support for those new things.

Personally, I expect better from a company that charges as much as Apple does for their products. iPadOS should be in a better place by now (coming from someone with a pro model and who is not a content creator or artist). I have an iPhone, an iMac as well as an iPad. I as a customer want iPadOS to be unique enough to where I NEED to use all three or at least two out of the three. I’m not asking for MacOS on iPad, however I am asking for a truly, price worthy, unique experience on my several hundred dollar iPad Pro.

Feels very much de já vu (M1 release on iPad and awaiting WWDC to untap the power).
I’ve got an M1 and happy as I’ve hit my workflow that works for it but feel sorry for those that may have got an iPad Pro hoping a few more pro experiences would come round.
Silver bullet for me would be that I can do the same (boring but productive) things that I do with a desktop computer such as
    - full office software functionalities like pivot tables in excel
    - advanced PowerPoint slide work
Sounds boring and easy but if someone sends me a work spreadsheet… I actually can’t do anything with it on iPad as likely it will have a pivot table in it.
Same goes for if someone uses a complex font in a slide as they used desktop PowerPoint
This makes me feel like £1k is a lot for an iPad as this is a very real workflow in the office.
Seemingly a surface pro can do with half the horse power.

I think the biggest problem with so many people being disappointed in this new OS release is that there are (mostly) too many unrealistic expectations that people expect for it. I do blame most of the RUclips tech channel community for that because “predictions/wishlists/rumors” videos are popular and do nothing than build expectations that will mostly likely never come to fruition. So when the actual event unfolds, everyone becomes disappointed.
However, Chris, you make a lot of valid points about viewers needing to change themselves instead of expecting changes around them. We’re so imbued with the idea that we don’t have to change. Instead, the world needs to change around us. And you’re 100% correct in that people will always look for something to complain about. If you give them one thing they like, they no longer have something to complain about so they look for something else to do the same. It’s a chronic pattern in our culture. No one is ever satisfied - we’re looking for more, better, easier, etc, - not because we need those things but because it’s a process that gives us some sense of “meaning and purpose” in our lives. It’s a false sense of feeling like we’re trying to make a difference when it only ends up being a sort of frustration because things aren’t going our ways.
In other words, we need to stop relying on being “spoon fed” by society on what we think we need or want and learn how to get the benefits and satisfaction for what we have right now, and be content. We need to let changes in life and tech come naturally, not forced upon us through a false narrative.

The files app in my opinion is ok and can wait, it will get better over time. Looking through the keynote again, I am ok with the updates and am looking forward to the public beta, I am just hoping my M1 11” iPad Pro with just 8GB of memory will be able to handle the new Apple Intelligence features. I use my 11” iPad Pro for the majority of my computing needs, the only one is stacking my Astrophotography data / fits files using a program like SIRIL. To all of those people that just want the iPad to be a Mac i have a great idea that you probably didn’t think of…. how about and this might sound shocking so bear with me go BUY A MACBOOK. The iPad is suppose to be different otherwise what’s the point of an iPad???? if it just does the same things as a Mac???? You can do 95% of the things you can do on the Mac on the iPad + you can do all the special things that only an iPad can do on iPad. You should be very happy with that!!!!!!!! If it was up to me the iPad wouldn’t have a keyboard, mouse or a file system!!! The iPad is suppose to be different!!! It suppose to have a new way to type or navigate, something we didn’t even think of something thats amazing not just copy what has already been done!!!!! Otherwise what’s the point? we still have the negatives of having to carry a heavy keyboard and mouse things that don’t disappear when not in use. Or the ridiculous complexity of a file system. If you are not forward thinking leave the iPad alone and go buy a MacBook. Gracias

I think the problem is bigger than one thing. Apple has been lagging in certain functionality (expansion of iPad functionality to be more capable as a laptop substitute) to protect their product line. They have a great ecosystem, BUT they are now falling behind. We need a touch screen laptop alternative. Is that a touch screen macbook or a more robust iPad? I don't think we care. They need an OS to get there. It is 2024 and they are playing catch up in AI, but they haven't even matched what Microsoft has been doing in consumer hardware for the better part of a decade. This makes their leapfrog strategy in AI look a little flimsy at best, and like mouth service and empty promises at worst.
Things they need to be developing:
Bi-fold or tri-fold phone that works as a phone or ipad mini
iPhone desktop mode; connect to an external monitor and have a desktop experience so you don't have to take your computer everywhere for presentations or doing light work
Touch screen laptop to tablet - Moral of the story for the last three bullets is, we need software that supports hybrid use cases and hardware that enables that productivity
Apple Music - Can someone please "invent" smart playlists??? Why are we still building playlists like we are making cassette tapes? Allow us to create a master playlist and then filter everything that goes into that playlist by, year, genre, decade, mode, etc., etc., etc., and then save the filters as "Smart Playlists". Sometimes we just want to filter songs we already saved without having to create an entirely new playlist for the event/mood.
Gaming: Get out of the way. Let developers have the resources they need to emulate other hardware' games on your devices. 8-16 bit systems is not enough to stay competitive in the game space. Users want one platform for gaming, and if OSX isn't it, they will stay elsewhere.
Apple Notes: Can you just rip off or buy everything Notion or Obsidian has ever done and incorporate it into this app?
Apple Reminders: We need more rules to auto update reminders based on other variables associated with the reminder. If I move a reminder into a column called "Archived" why not allow me to auto move the reminder to an Archived list and remove it from my active list? Currently this cannot be done in shortcuts (I have tried)
Which brings me to my last point, Shortcuts; we need a lot more out of this. We need more 3rd party developer integrations. We need more 1st party application variables for more recent features and fucntionality. We just need more consistent focus here. Apple Intelligence, Chat GPT, Siri 2.0 or anything else you call AI won't be much help if it doesn't have access to a core framework of capabilities, that I would expect would be robustly documented in Shortcuts.
Ok, rant over. I love Apple, but it is beginning to feel liek they are stringing us along and doing the minimally viable product for cost efficiencies and in some cases, to protect their bottom line.

As much as I love iPad Pro, all the apps I use are like the baby version. RUclips, Final Cut, and certain websites I use can't stay open because of the memory being bad at management. And I am considering strongly going back to publishing videos on RUclips. And even publishing a book on Apple Books needs the full version of microsoft word. It's better to write journals and read books the old fashioned way. Hey even buy a book in a scroll 📜 version. Your eyes will thank you. Oh and sound on iPad and iPhone is so annoying. I want to listen to ambient sounds and browse through some articles but my music is stopped automatically because iPadOS and iOS can't manage multiple sound sources. I think I'm going back to the mac. A desktop setup is where your neck and back will thank you for better ergonomics.

A much larger screen is needed to make Stage Manager usable IMHO. Im so tired of this narrative that iPads are lack luster. They compare it to a traditional clamshell style computer they've known for years and that's all they know. On the other hand i grew up with windows and i grew up with iOS. iPadOS is iOS on steroids. its am intimate touch based os. You have to figure out new work flows, better work flows and figure out if a touch based os is best for your work case scenario. obviously if you want to do traditional laptop style work, use a laptop. This isn't rocket science, but sooooo many people want what THEY want. most people are childish in this respect. Apple has THE BEST engineers and designers and creative minds inn the world. And i give apple and there engineers the upmost respect and praise. They've created this amazing touch based computer and people still want to use it like they're used to, as a laptop. Just disrespects all the hard wok all apples engineers put in to make this touch based system magical. Drag and drop multi touch gestures palm rejection, etc. And yes iPados is still way newer than macOS so more developers have made work flow apps better for mac, just makes sense. As an iPad pro user you have to figure out a new way to work and a new work flow, but i love my workflow now WAY more than my old school workflow on my MacBook. Stop wanting apple to change for you, instead YOU decide whether a touch based computer is best for you or not.... grow up. If you too want to touch a screen and draw once a year, buy an iPad mini along side your MacBook.

Maybe because I’m from a different generation, I don’t know, but I have a hard time understanding why we continue to make excuses for Apple not giving us what we (the customers) continue to ask for year after year. The customer should hold ALL of the power. Not the other way around. At least, that’s the way it used to be. We continue to let businesses and corporations rule over us like governments. So, we shouldn’t have to “upgrade ourselves” to work around Apple’s business model, but demand they adapt their business model around the customers needs and wants.

I wasn’t disappointed. While I know we usually get some form of software magic at WWDC, the fact of the matter is it’s a developers conference, not a consumers conference. One of the things that I noticed and it was very subtle with the number of times they said that the API’s are going to be open to third-party developers, I’m not Developer, but I understand what that means. It means that many of the things people are clamoring for can be done by somebody if not, Apple. But I’m old enough to remember when the killer app was not an apple app, it was VisiCalc.

WWDC HAPPENS - and still people are scratching their heads cos the M4 Power can still not be utilized - there is still no reason for m4 which means .......Apple has nothing lined up just a smoke screen to make people buy a overpowered piece of technology that lacks a operating system that they cannot make better.... I mean really how long can it take to better a OS ? the beta is at use now but still that even is a mess and not working ( should they not have had this ready in tip top shape for wwdc?) Its the biggest joke ever. Ive been resisting to purchase the ipad pro m2 since december hearing of the launch of the new m4's ....patiently waiting as they got launched nearly 6months later ...then waiting again another month as it was promised wwdc will reveal why u need the m4 power - super dissapointed nothing of it came all lies. C’mon, you don’t need to insult us to spin an awful ipadOS announcement just to not antagonize Apple.

The Files app in the beta is still buggy! I can't move or copy a 2GB file from Google Drive or iCloud onto my iPad. There isn't even an error message! Also when selecting multiple files in Google Drive and trying to move those onto the iPad only a single file gets moved. That's so incredibly lame!
I am not a typical iPad user. I would have liked to see 2 things on the iPad: XCode and a terminal app with full access to everything that Files has access to.

I was also disappointed, but more by the lack of fine-tuning. The FilesApp, background functions and other "little things" that make everyday life easier should have been improved. I think they had more to do with AI this year.

I wish files were better so I could more easily sync my data with my NAS. I wish there was a terminal, and I wish I could write and run python. But my 2017 10.5 iPad pro battery is nearly dead, so I need to upgrade. I just wish there was some functionality with the M4 that would make the Pro worth it. Still undecided on what to get.

When you buy a Mac, you also get a license of macOS. So if Apple ever decides to allow dual booting of iPadOS with macOS, don’t be surprised if you have to buy a copy of macOS too.

For me, I updated my iPad Pro from 2018 so there was some really nice features for me.
But, the one thing I really like to use that I couldn’t use on my 2018 iPad Pro is Final Cut Pro for iPad.

Ability to manage background activities is the biggest missing thing on the iPad. I can use the iPad as is, but there are simple things like copying photos from my SSD to a NAS which will not work seamlesslybecause of the way ipados treats background activities

Colored icons and reorganization of control center doesn’t do crap for iPadOS. If the most exciting thing was a calculator, you got a problem. IpadOS desperately needs a files app overhaul, and stage manager needs to be revamped to be less restrictive. iPadOS is smooth animation wise, but to perform tasks intuitively, the OS is constantly getting in the way of letting you do things you want to do how you expect to be able it do it

My decision to buy the iPad Pro was based on the iPad OS update having improvements that make it valuable. Adding the calculator, was not it. They would be better off working on Mirroring the MacBook desktop onto the iPad just like they did it with the iPhone. I think kids are going to be able to use the Math notes feature to cheat and solve problems without thinking about them.

I think it’s because half of the iPad community wants it to run Mac OS instead of just making improvements to iPadOS. Personally the only thing I wanted that they didn’t do was rework the files app a bit

Why didn’t these customers simply wait to see what the software improvements looked like before buying? Seems like complaining for the sake of complaining.

I'm not looking for any complete reimagining of iPadOS in iPadOS18, but I was hoping for some better productivity based improvements. The Files app, apps continuing to run in the background, etc. would have been awesome. For example, I use ShellFish to get to my Linux servers. If I shrink down the ShellFish window to get to another window like Mail, neither window has enough real estate to do anything meaningful, and this is on a 13" Pro model. If I swipe away from the ShellFish window while something is processing (like rendering video on a Linux server), it halts, loses the connection, and I have to start from scratch. At this point, my iPad has just become a big terminal window. Now, this is obviously a one off case, but I can think of a ton of reasons why background multitasking would be a huge win, especially on an iPad that has a better processor than my M1 Mac mini.

You should look into using mosh instead of ssh. I'm using it with Blink Shell. I can switch away and my sessions stay connected.
That being said, I want Apple to add a Terminal app so I can run stuff locally.

Keep up the good work and stay positive. The iPad is amazing. Thank you for not being a downer and listening to all of these people commenting negative things on your video. It’s hard not to get audience captured and just starting to say negative things to get more views. But i love it!!!! Thank you

You don't need to buy the latest iPad. Just stick to what work best for you. I bought the new iPad not because of the M4, but because of the OLED and weight reduction. Pick what matter most to you then.

Apple makes it so obvious they don't care about the iPad. Why did the iPad not get the window tiling and iPhone remote access feature that the Mac got. Even the note calculator feature is actually a feature that comes to all platforms. Usually they would have waited a year to bring over the new control center to iPad to make it better for the iPads larger screen like they did with the lockscreen. But this time they just had to copy the feature 1:1 because the update is already so tiny. I truly do not understand how one could have a positive reaction to this update.

iPadOS 18 is so underwhelming, it will hurt iPad sales. The M4 is op for it and needlessly raised the price point. Bad Apple. 🍏 😢

Its files. We hate files. Its not about wanting iPad to be a Mac. i love the iPad for what it is already too, im an artist so i use it even more than my laptop. but the organization on it is absolute garbage for me. The only thing that keeps me going is that i don't have to deal with it as much due to procreate and dreams keeping my files in their app. Despite how much i love the iPad, if i had to deal with files every time i needed to open the project, id probably move to my other drawing tablets. Thats how much i hate it 😂

videos like this is why apple will continue to disappoint. i get you love apple, i do as well but we can not continue to accept these weak updates. ipads can be capable of so much yet apple continues to disappoint. the complaints are justifiable. it's 2024. stop making these crappy videos
