I think that the most important characteristic of any video, whether you describe it as ‘cinematic’ or not, is SMOOTHNESS. Even if you meet all of the challenges you set, if the result is not smooth, the end result is hugely devalued.

I'm glad to see that your definition of "cinematic" video doesn't require 24fps. Since the most interesting videos involve movement, either the camera or the subject, 24fps tends to look jerky unless the movement is exceedingly slow.

I have a handful of "cinematic" videos on my channel that are focused on one landmark or natural feature in each video. I almost always start with a reveal shot and end the video by flying backwards and away from the subject. In between the beginning and ending shots, I perform about 3-5 "cinematic" movements. Glad you made this video, Russ. It was informative.

Russ, you never disappoint! I had a big, long list of moves in my phone that I try to follow, but it was too many. I added your suggestions and deleted the others. My only other suggestions are to get a wide "establishing" shot that shows the setting and surroundings. Also, when editing, keep all your clips under 5 seconds. I really struggle with this one, but viewing other creator's videos, I start to lose interest in longer clips. You can always speed them up to get longer ones into that time frame. Your suggestion about planning ahead is vital. Even when planning ahead, I seem to only ever use a small percentage of my footage in any finished product. Thanks for all your great content!

Whether you use that shot at the beginning of the video or at the end, you need a wide shot to give the viewer perspective and help set the scene so they get your story. I have seen wide shots very effectively use at the end of a video...there are many medium and CU shots of something, then there is a shot that pulls back and back, turning into a wide shot, so the viewers says, "Oh that's what that is!"
Most of the problems I have is how to use the different editing APPS. Not all are easy to learn. I have deleted all of them and went back to DJI Editor. Keeping it simple is the key for me.

I have a ton of footage that is absolutely useless. Looking at the videos I have posted, only one has really had an impact, analytically speaking. The funny thing is that it was filmed, edited and published in less than hour. It was far from perfect but it had elements that most of my videos didn't. Again....great video, Russ!!!

How does one search out what will work best. You mentioned remembering something to use, but how did you find it in the first place? I waste way too much time trying to find appropriate sounds or music.
I don't know that Epidemic sound is still the lowest-price. I just signed up to another (no shilling here) that cost me $59 for an entire year and has an incredibly good range of music and SFX. As always, shop around.

So true, I see so many videos done with a camera or drone which make me dizzy from all the jerkiness or panning too fast.
I like occasionally mix bit of a handheld captured footage in to a smooth drone shots to create nice contrast.

There is a button that shows you songs that are similar to one you’ve found. I use the most. It looks like 2 circles
I've used my cell phone to capture audio for my water rushing sounds.
