The thing is, I believe the issue was that he focused so much on aimless networking that he got so mentally involved in the process that he forgot what the purpose of networking was. I personally have realized that closing your inner circle as much as possible with the type of individuals that are rather influential is what will start making a difference. My favorite phrase for relationships is -strategic networking- Thread the web of your inner circle of connections with purpose.

I don't think two years he's spent on building networking is worthless. I should have learn lots of skills which he would use on his bussiness later. And look! Do you think why he could talk and present so well like that? That's what communicating to many different people brings to him.

I am confused by the contradictions here. At the beginning of Rob's talk he explains that he was an enthusiastic networker - but this brought him very little, certainly in financial terms, plus his wife was very lonely! However, towards the end of the talk, he encourages his listeners to network - "networking is a fantastic way to build your reputation". It seems that networking didn't work for him!
Julie Meraud I think it's that only focusing on networking did nothing. He didn't build up all those other things which made him blend in. He wasn't unique, he didn't stand out. But once you stand out, then networking would help your reputation since it's based on other people talking to you.
I think what he meant was that he was merely collecting cards instead of actually invoke any kind of connection, he wasn't 'selling' himself which is why he couldn't get any business. Later on he learns all these different rules and stuff and now he is able to utilise his contacts better.

I was selected to judge a modeling competition last month and I thought, oh this is a good way for me to network and spread my brand to another region and possibly sign some models to my agency. But then the only thing I really got out of it was possibly blogging about being selected to be a judge and I have some great photos that show me judging and interacting with models because my Dad's a professional photographer and I brought him. The models I met weren't any better than the models I've already scouted in my area and as a model manager it's better to work with people that live within 100 models of the agency. I think the photos and the story help establish me as a leader in this part of the country though.

I thought this was brilliant! They say most people judge whether they will like you within the first 3 seconds of meeting someone, what if everyone doesn't like you or your reputation how would you change this?
If you already had a bad rep then you have to work from there. Go back out into the world and let them know how much of a changed person you are. Then let them see it through your actions. A statement needs to be made followed by appropriate corresponding actions. If you didn't have a bad rep to start with then listen to his Ted talk again 😂😂.
I can't seem to get beyond the sad feeling that he didn't feel fulfilled being a teacher and an academic mentor to children. "I was producing thousands and thousands of children who could pass tests..." I mean, if it wasn't where he was supposed to be, then it's understood. It just reminds me of the sad state our children are in (those children who don't have the money to receive the best education).

No. Reputation is what big business will use to take your small business down (small businesses are a threat to them) they've even stooped to removing good feedback, along with adding bad. People don't check your swag, they check customers' reviews of product.
Some factories make a huge difference in the world. You like to eat right? I will agree that public schools produce almost nothing of value, though, and are a huge waste of time, money, and energy.
I would agree that it is pretty lack luster and I would even go further to say that it was almost superficial as in surface based. He made good points in selling yourself and building a reputation and being yourself not trying to be someone else but it was all surface level cliches that everyone says. They tell you to sell yourself but it's hard to find someone to tell you how to sell yourself, how to make yourself wanted, and how to find the treasure inside yourself. They tell you to build a reputation but they don't say how to build a reputation, how to go about it in an authentic way, and what to do when we make choices that totally contradict our reputation. And they tell you to be yourself but they I honestly doubt most people even know how to discover and build your own essence, what makes you yourself and not someone else.
It's pretty basic information delivered in a very slimy way that derides workers in both education and manufacturing. I didn't find it boring. I found it angering.
