    thank you Matt , this is great , as Iam dealing with a 2003 f850 gs with crazy low clearance almost no clearance on my exhaust so ima going to use tat equation to bring the clearance back to a proper clearance ,

    @Matt; for the G310GS, it is my understanding the intake valve clearance specs are 0.11mm-0.20mm & the exhaust is 0.26mm-0.35mm. After speaking with some reputable mechanics, they recommended setting it at the "tighter" end of the range....such as 0.13mm & 0.28mm. The theory is it allows valves to open more, and they are confident the bikes run better. Thoughts?

    My bmw g310gs came from the factory with too big of shims on the intake. This eventually flatened the cam lobes. How would i check to downsize my shim?

  • @MarshallHewettMusic

    I had my bikes head resurfaced and installed brand new valves. Would I just measure new shims until I get the factory spec? Because i cant go off of the old measurements since everything is new now right?

    I got a new question. I just changed my exhaust valve from a 265 shim to a 258 shim because i measured 0,18mm and need 0,21-0,25mm. When i changed to the 258 i tried to get in a 0,28mm and had to force it in with some pressure and it worked but it felt to much pressure. I dont know if im gonna change it to a 260 or just have 258. I tried with the 0,25mm and it felt like it should

      Looser is better than tighter when it comes to shim adjustments. It sounds like the adjustment is fine

    What’s the best way to start with shims if you put new valves in and the bike never had shims when you brought it disassembled?

    • @MattsMotoWoRX
      @MattsMotoWoRX  3 года назад +2

      If you have a pack of shims start in the middle and work from there

    I just finished the a=b-c+d for my valves on the r1. I had some shims already. My manual calls for 0.11-0.20. Is it okay shoot for a clearance of 0.17? Jus wondering cause these shims I have make that clearance.

    • @MattsMotoWoRX
      @MattsMotoWoRX  Год назад +1

    I just got my r1 back together and all my valves are in spec now but it will not start and I have the timing correct and lined up. Could a timing chain to tight cause it to not start?

    • @MattsMotoWoRX

      Double check everything. If it’s throwing a code 19 when your trying to start it your ignition switch needs to be cleaned

    hey, i got a shim now that is 2.675 and the clearance is around 0.18mm. I calculated that it needs a 2.705 but then i should get a 2.70 which is gonna be 0.005mm too loose. the standard intake clearance is 0.11-0.15mm

    Hi just wondering when doing the math taking the number from the manufacturer recommendation let’s say it’s from 0.17 to 0.22 would you just take like a 0.19 to do the math for the spec’d clearance?

    • @MattsMotoWoRX
      @MattsMotoWoRX  3 года назад +1

    Great video! But let me just take a moment to say there was no need to put that in an algebraic equation. I think people like to convert things to algebra a little too often. I had a hard time understanding algebra in school. Because I couldn’t understand why you would assign an alpha to a numeric value. Once the light came on and I understood why. My first question was, this complicated, why not just do it in your head?
    Ladies and gentlemen, algebra was made for stupid people. I design every equation I need in real time.
