I like the first movie and the first few seasons but after the original Creator said that he wanted it to end and Disney wouldn't let it so they decided to keep running it and ruined the series it just went downhill there is a misunderstanding in the series & stitch thought that Lilo destroyed family and left him all alone so he went to Japan or China or something like that and met another girl and apparently like 15 years later he goes back to Hawaii or something like that and sees lilo's daughter and they're just like oh hey it's stitch I wonder where he was like nothing ever f****** happened or like they just figured he left one day and didn't even try looking for him

One thing I really love is that the movie shows details in the background of what Nani had to sacrifice to take care of Lilo. In Nani's bedroom, there's a surfboard, a dresser covered with trophies, and medals hanging on her wall, all implying that Nani had a history of being a professional surfer. Given she spends a lot of the film filling different job roles, it's suggested she had to retire from surfing sports after her parents' deaths because it wasn't financially sustainable.

David was quite a good character, showing that a love interest can be so much more than "that person the main character is supposed to fall in love with." He loves this broken family, even when a date with Nani isn't on the table. He's more than a love interest: He's a man who loves this broken family, and gives of himself to them.

Stitch: "Ohana means family. Family means..."
    Nani: "Nobody gets left behind."
    Stitch: "Or forgotten. Yeah."
That part gets me every time. It's just after Stitch realizes all he wants is to be accepted as family and now sees the pain of Nani believing she had lost her only family left. So, Stitch empathizes with Nani, feels her pain, and realizes Lilo is family who is about to be forgotten. So, he says the line half-broken and not quite sure what will happen to Lilo or the family. And it's so uplifting and devastating at the same time. It's the turn into the final act and it's just perfect.

the irony of these "failed" experiments is that they are underated gems, the emperors new groove is terrific, funny, and rememberable, treasure planet was terrific, excellent art animation and design a movie ahead of its time, similar to atlantis, but i remember this one better.
and a comment u mention the backgrounds being gorgeous, they were made with water color, you do not see that kinda work in animation anymore, heck it was even rare when this movie did it,
and the series has its charm, but lacks the same impact the movie did, but 625 is a gem in that series,

Everyone made such a big deal about how Frozen was so different because it was the"first" love story from Disney that wasn't about romantic love. Could you start a short character analysis series? I would love to hear your thoughts on David, as I feel he doesn’t get enough credit for being one of the BEST love interests despite not having much screen time.
He is so in love with Nani without her dysfunctional family. He KNOWS that she is basically a “single mother” looking after her younger sibling. He KNOWS that she is broke and struggling just to make ends meet. And he KNOWS that she isn’t ready for a relationship. Despite that, he stays by Nani’s side and supports her through everything. Even if he can’t get a piece of action. That is such genuine selflessness for someone you care about and I really believe this movie represents what family should be. He is a guy that isn’t just cut and paste like the majority of Disney love interests, and actually puts realistic goals/dreams on the line to keep the women he loves.
I would love to hear your personal take on this or other characters; you’re great at capturing what makes them successful.

I'm sure people might have mentioned this already, but the "big head Jumba" at the end is actually the result of the scene needing to be reanimated after Jumba got a character model update and then running out of time/funds to fix all of it. The original scene was deemed too violent. If I remember correctly, you can hear the animators or directors talking about this scene in one of the films bonus features and there might be even more changes/inconsistencies when it comes to that scene in particular. (I think I recall subtle differences to the house's exterior or some such? Might be misremembering that though.)
Excellent review! It's so disheartening that Chris Sanders was pushed out of Disney, because I really feel like his artistic style and direction really worked it's best there with the other Disney employees he worked with. Nothing against his work at Dreamworks, but I just don't feel that it has the same level of polish and cohesion that Lilo and Stitch pulled off. Either way, this movie is amazing and it's a miracle it was even made in the first place.

Although the ugly duckling part was cute, the movie completely misses the point of the book by focusing only on the lost part. The duckling itself wasn't just lost, it was mocked and disowned by its family, who alone despised him for his appearance. However, he grew up to be a beautiful swan despite his rough upbringing. Are You My Mother better fits the idea of being lost rather than the Ugly Duckling.

16:17 Hey there, Saberspark! Just wanted to address the point you make here.
The reason for the inconsistent character proportions bothered me too when I saw it as a kid. It wasn't until much later that I learned that this was actually due to some last minute changes made to the film.
The scenes where Jumba's head size is noticeably different were done real quick by another animation studio (in either Korea or Canada, I can never remember exactly). The scenes had to be changed due to some content being deemed too ... shall we say, risky - to show in theaters.
    The scenes in question are
    1) Where Jumba invades Lilo and Nani's house, he uses his blaster a LOT more often than we see in the original film. They change some of the scenes where he is shooting stitch on the ceiling to throwing plates through the ceiling. Additionally, during the "hot potato" portion of this scene, the original cut of the film had Stitch tearing the stove off the wall and opening the gas line. When Jumba pointed the blaster at Stitch, Stitch grinned maliciously, and the house went Kablooy as soon as Jumba pulled the Trigger. You can understand why this could have been seen as imitatable, and therefore was edited rather hastily.
    2) the second scene where Jumba is really inconsistent were the scenes in the Big Red Battleship. Originally, instead of being an alien spaceship, Jumba Pleakly and the gang comandeered a Boeing 747. Then, as they pursued Captain Gantu, they flew the 747 through downtown Honolulu (later changed to be a mountain range). With the theatrical release set to come out in early 2002, and with the tragity of 9/11 just in the rear view, Disney understandably had to change anything remotely pretaining to Jumbo Jets and Cityscapes.
I hope this clears up the issue for you, and helps you understand why the movie has this one rather glaring Issue. This is one of my favorite films of all time, and I am so glad you did it justice in your analysis. Thank you!

12:21 It's funny that you bring up the point of being lost. In Olelo Hawaii, Hawaiian language, Lilo means "to be lost". The theme of being lost is the single most prevailing thing about this movie. Lilo feels lost in society. Nani feels lost in her role in the family. Stitch is literally alienated. Even Jumba at the end is lost for words when his creature is not following his programing.
It is quite ironic that the destructive alien creature Experiment 626 was given the name "Stitch". Maybe Lilo realized he wasn't quite a dog and called him Stitch because he was "stitched up". Little did she know that he would find his place and repair her broken family. Each time I see this film I always learn something new from it and that is a true sign of what a masterpiece is.

This has always been one of my most favorite Disney films ever since it first premiered. The characters are all enjoyable to watch, whether it's for the comedy, action, or drama, especially for the main trio. I also find it fascinating whenever a story combines realistic issues with fantastical elements, which can add a nice bit of spice to your story. When done well, of course.
Also, I absolutely love the art direction in this movie. The watercolors emphasize the tropical environment of the Hawaiian islands well, the alien ships are unique in shape, and the character designs are especially amazing. Regarding the humans, the roundness gives them some great flair with a sense of weight and realism to the mix, and they can pull off amazing expressions, whether they be subtle or exaggerated. The alien designs are also spectacular with their versatile shapes and proportions, as well as their resemblance to animals (Stitch=koala/bulldog, Jumba=large bug {pillbug perhaps?}, Gantu=whale/maybe shark, Grand Council Woman=hadrosaurs/sauropodomorphs). Heck, two of the navigators even resemble Piglet and Tigger.
I do agree, though, that Jumba's design inconsistency was an issue, especially during the scene where he and Stitch destroyed Lilo's house. Granted, that was done to replace a more violent scene in a short amount of time, but it's still jarring. Overall, I definitely prefer Jumba's 'gruffer' look since it fits better with his imposing, idiot scien-- I mean, evil genius personality. Not to mention that it poses as a stronger contrast to the sillier design of Pleakley and the cuter ones of Lilo and Stitch themselves.
Speaking of designs, you really ought to check out Chris Sanders' very first drawing of Stitch. It's very different and even more monstrous that the final design.
Oh yeah, and you can't forget about those amazing trailers where Stitch would randomly pop up in a Disney Renaissance film. I remember watching those back in the day and kept asking myself, 'Who or what is that blue koala-thing and what's it doing in Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, etc.?' Guess that really shows good marketing on Disney's part. Heck, I even have that poster where all the past Disney characters appear disgusted or scared of Stitch (except Jasmine apparently).

Wasn't the reason for the inconsistent animation because of having to reanimate that house confrontation scene? It was considered too violent so they had to redo it.
Also the final flying sequence being changed from a jumbo jet through buildings (cause of 9/11) to the alien spacecraft through the clouds.

  • @makaniistorm8664

Saberspark, I am SO glad you made this video! Lilo & Stitch was the first Disney VHS my parents got for me, and I played that one the most. I grew up in an island myself when I lived back in Puerto Rico, and this movie had much more of a lasting impact on me than any other of the Disney movies that involved princesses or talking animals. The characters, their dynamics, and the art felt so real to me, even with a mix of sci-fi put into the film. I used to watch it once a year back in the day, and maybe I will watch it once again tonight and remember how unique it really is.

  • @Uppy21

Actually, the reason Jumba's proportions are off, is in a deleted scene: ruclips.net/video/x6-L5TNXKXo/видео.html
Originally the house was going to explode because Stitch tore the oven off the wall and exposed propane gas. Him and Jumba have a standoff until Jumba finally shoots and explodes the house. This goes with what Chris Sanders hated about Disney, is they cut a lot from the movie.
They had to make last-minute changes, to the fight scene which is why it looks so wonky. Sure they could've done better, but it's not the only scene they had to "fix." The original spaceship chase scene got completely reworked. They were supposed to steal an airplane, and the chase would take place in the city, but after 9/11, they had to scrap the whole thing. Personally, I didn't like that scene because the mountains seemed unnatural. Oh, and Jumba was supposed to have thrown a hunting knife, not a pocket knife.
This was a great essay, but I wished you spoke on the deleted scenes...Maybe for another video?

Ah, my favorite Disney movie! I love it because it's an original story (that is to say, not based on a fairy tale or novel), it's sci-fi, and it bears similarities to the first sci-fi and one of my favorite novels, Frankenstein. Particularly, there's the scene where the monster in Frankenstein saves a drowning girl but is attacked by her father who believes the monster wants to harm the girl, and in Lilo and Stitch, there's a scene where Stitch is attacked and grabs Lilo for safety, only for Nani to believe that Stitch was trying to drown her.

I also love how the theme connects into the show and movies. Stitch's cousins and Jumba and Pleakley are all trying to find a place that's best for them. I really like Leroy and Stitch because (spoilers for a 10-15 old direct to DVD movie) have gone on to do things they would love to do in space, but have to leave Lilo and Earth.
At first, they are adamant to go at all since Lilo has been so much to them, but once Lilo says it's fine, they head out. But, what really holds up is: Stitch, Jumba and Pleakley all want to head back home, feeling home sick and miss Lilo.
That connection is why i love this series.

Dude, Disney ditched hand-drawn movies LONG ago. The only true reason is because "no one" wants to see a hand-drawn movie anymore. CGI can achieve fantastical things, it's easier, it's better, it's grander. I'm not speaking for myself, I love hand drawn movies. But there's no turning back now. Eventually, hand-drawing, drawing itself will die as we are further consumed by our technologies. I wouldn't be writing this if that wasn't true, or should I say, typing.

People have preferences and there is always a market even if it's niche. Anime still gets hand drawn despite the majority being animated in computer. We'll always have hand drawn and hand made things, it'll just be less common since most people will do what's easier/most profitable over aesthetic.
