I don’t know what to say. This song is freaking amazing. The way the rhythm rolls on through with the acoustics and drums is effortlessly flawless. And those vocals! How is it possible that the more that her voice ages, the stronger it becomes. And to think that she lost that voice for nine months, not even knowing if she would ever be able to sing again. I’ll see you in June in Providence, RI Natalie!!
My favourite song on the album, but I don't hear much of 'Motherland'. In places, it reminds me a little bit of Peter Sarstedt's "Where Do You Go To, My Lovely" (eg the "But you"ll never be free" part).
@@portcullis5622 I guess we all find bits of a melody that reminds us of other parts of other songs. For me in the first track "BIg Girls" I find a few notes in the beginning that sound like Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and then a part that sounds like Lulu's "To Sir With Love" I absolutely love this new album. It continues to grow on me.
@@katzparov Yes, inevitable after years of listening to lots of types of music. I do like the new album (I have just listened to it as a full album for the first time), but my initial observation is that it features a lot of slow paced, heavily orchestrated songs, which tend to blend into one.
I find that the more I listen to it, the more I like it. I have had a number of songs that I have had looping for hours on end. "Bad Girls" being one of them. Years ago when I was heavily into U2, I was eagerly waiting for "ACHTUNG BABY" to be released. When it was released I was not crazy about the album. I was expecting something more like JOSHUA TREE. I was disappointed. Listened to the CD a few times and then put it on the shelf. After about two weeks I tried listening to it again. ACHTUNG BABY ended up becoming one of my all time favorite albums. That is one big reason that I no longer listen to reviewers and critics nor judge an album based on first listenes or even first few days of listening.
You swept over me like a raging sea Lashing and crashing my side 'til I just gave way You were the tempest-tossed, given up for dead and lost And you sailed on, the eye of the storm You were the eye of the storm Then you left me behind when you severed all ties Sworn lone drifter you'd be, but you'll never be free Oblivion bound, you'll never be found You'll sail on, the eye of the storm You're the eye of the storm So high on the seas you roam, a sack of skull and bone All plunder and pillage inside, the roving-roughish kind Well if time hasn't touched you at all, you're still the same as before Still plowing and cursing the deep in your man-of-war With all the whiskey and rye and a curse on your mind You sail on, the eye of the storm You're the eye of the storm From time to time, you still crawl across my mind Just a mumbling, stumbling thief in the black of night You're a tree with a broken limb, picked up and thrown by the wind You're the gale's deafening pound, you're the boom and you're the howl You're hail stoning the deck, you're the ship about to wreck You're Blackbeard on the bow with a fuse in your mouth And you sail on, the eye of the storm You're the eye of the storm
This is why I keep coming back to listen I am swept away in the storm by the flow of the Lyric's sung by Natalie Merchant same as I always have been since I first heard Natalie in 10,000 Maniacs.
Natalie I think knows my parents .. frozen Charlotte when my mom passed in highschool . and eye of the storm is my dad who abandoned after ..27 later still on that boat ..
from the first song that the needle hit on the first side of the wishing chair this has been the voice that captivated me & enraptured me. this album is giving me goosebumps on goosebumps & i could not be happier with every single thing about it, the arrangements, performances & production are flawless & natalie's voice is stronger than ever in her vocals & her thoughtful, incisive & wildly poetic lyrics. keep your courage has the weight, balance & perspective of maturity & the lightness & flowing of creative spirits & freedom & the release of unbound expression, joy, bravery, exploration, discovery & connection. thank you very very much natalie & everyone who worked on this project, the lyric videos are a gift that keeps on giving & essential to the experience of this amazing album! 💛🎙💚👩🧡💃🤍🪑💙🔊💜🎶💗🙌😊
Getting album delivered today, can't wait sure it will be breathtaking in vinyl, will love it and can't wait to hear it in person in Glasgow November 5th :)
Great, great song. One of my favorites on this special album!! Such a good beat and passion in singing. Think I understand what’s she saying, but not sure.
Who is the statue of the woman supposed to be? My guess is Joan of Arc, am I right? As for Natalie's music, it's my main choice of music when driving long distances in the car. My two favorites are Tigerlily and Ophelia (They keep me calm in the car). Motherland is okay too, but I wasn't thrilled with House Carpenter's Daughter, or Leave your Sleep. But I just started playing songs from this CD, and I like them so I will probably get the CD.
I have one sister. As a kid, she either got her way or stopped talking to me until I apologized first something I never did. Now, we’re both Natalie’s age, she refuses to even acknowledge I exist. She ignores any phone calls or texts.

Natalie Merchant has the sort of voice that reaches into the dark recesses and drags out emotions that were securely locked away.
So true
She always makes me cry (in a good way).
The Anthem of All Survivors of Narcissistic Parents, Narcissistic Toxic Family Systems, and Narcissistic Partners. ❤ Thank you, Natalie.
a beautiful soul a beautiful heart a beautiful mind a beautiful voice
No doubt. This woman is the whole package ❤
Amazing 👏 ❤ Ms Merchant is better than ever!! (And love this song even more as the proud Auntie of Matt Mancuso on the Irish fiddle 🎻 ❤️)

This number comes in. I feel the pain and the sadness in it. it helps to know that there are many of us going through this pain

The one that will never be replaced.
I cant express what your music means too me, since I was a young one in the nineties. Such a beautiful song. ❤
Oh, Natalie! Her voice transports me.
Such vivid lyrics, and the music billows up and down like the story. Beautiful song.

Oh the masterpiece that is The Wishing Chair.
Just when I thought she was fading into obscurity she shows she still knows how to leave her mark. I have such great taste in women.

Anyone going to Saratoga alone??

Person(s) come to mind.
Lunasa played on this one. I'd know their sound anywhere.
Brian is Celtic 🙂🙂🙂
Whats the name of the song playing?

What an absolutely beautiful song. Love the poignant lyrics.
