The irony is that Johnny Depp once said that all his characters were gay, but no one dared to ask him why he played Jack Sparrow the way he did. So Disney already had Depp as a sort of "ally" since the first movie without knowing it, because they were more concerned with judging him than simply asking him.
This new Pirates film character is based on a real woman pirate Anne Bonny who operated in the Carribean, but even this story Disney can't be authentic with. The original woman was irish and white.
