"lance mountain has his own style, it almost likes he's surfing sometimes and homeboy can't even surft, he has to go out with a boogie board and snorkel" -steve olson haha best thing ever
Grant Taylor, Hosoi, Elguera, Jeff Phillips, Gonz, Natas, Cab, Blender, Omar Hassan, Monty Nolder, Cardiel, Billy Ruff, Mountain, John Gibson, Hensley.... sooooo many style kings and each one different. Can't leave off Grosso who will be so missed. Miss his smiles and laughter.
Wait, wait , wait- there were a couple of 90's era skaters mentioned and featured and yet somehow Tom Penny wasn't???? He is one of the few skater that imho had BOTH "how you do it" AND "what you do". I mean he had the look (which he still stays true to today), the relaxed, effortless, natural style all the while on the "what you do" side of things he brought the early 90's scrapping the ground flips up into big pop over and down huge s***.
True story: I used to bartend and promote at a very popular and local beach bar and we booked US Bombs early in their inception. Jacksonville, being a big skate and surf town, was well aware of them so the turnout was max capacity. I'd been skating since the 80's so I knew who Duane was. Buck Smith introduced me to Duane that night and I got us all pretty trashed. At one point, I was out back pissing and Daune came out there with some little local girl. Im sitting to the side having a smoke and I see Duane walk over to a corner to piss and the girl, who was also pretty trashed, didn't notice what he was doing and walked right up in front of him. Duane didn't give a shit, or didn't notice, and just kept pissing, all over this chick. So there's Duane putting his junk away with a smiling piss soaked girl standing in front of him. To Duane: Sorry we made you to hung over to play the show the next night...
I was at that show and on a side note Buck has mad style and Peterson and Tim Johnson and Todd and Bagoe and Toothless. Jacksonville is full of style and I miss it everyday.
@@kevinmartin7354 Turns out that it was Timmy Mac who doused homegirls pant leg... Memories are funny like that... So there she was, just got pissed on my some other dude and she's all up in Duane's face while he's tryin to find a spot to drain.
Fuck this makes me wanna go skate right now so bad but it's raining so I'll sit here and watch some more eps! :D ps I think lots of us skaters feel we personally have bad style and our friends/skaters we know have really good style. You tell one of your friends this and they are like what I love your style and mine sucks. Our biggest critics our ourselves.
I wish the stupid-ass judges would consider style in contests...it's all about how many spins you can do now and you can have the worst style in the world...
I also always liked Daewon's style when it came to manual tricks. Nobody looked that perfect. Almost not-style because of how perfect it is, but it is.
Sick Loveletter. My favorite to date ... Lance Mountain has great style for sure, and Tony Alva with that pure steez. And Salba, Duane, Hosoi... Each of them have different styles, but they are all sick.
An entire thing about style and nobody mentioned Chris Miller? Are you kidding me? Those boned out airs and board slides couldn't have beaten Hawk a few times back 20 years ago by themselves. He was one of the smoothest, most stylish of that era.
Chris Miller bar none even Hosoi had and still has the best style ever. Watch old videos of him skating Upland and not only destroying, but the gnarliest aggro style ever!
Rad :) Forgot to mention Gino and Penny.. Keenan.. Donny Barley.. Lotti... Markovich... Willy Santos and Andrew Reynolds Forgive me, I grew up skating street
I totally understand what you say. You are entitled to it. As Olsen says it best @ 5:26, these are all just opinions. What your preference of style will not be the same for another person. It's pragmatic. There are SO many skateboarders with style, it's just who you choose as your favorite. I got a list... but it's pretty damn long. lol
Favorite style at this point that I've seen is Nick Holt from the RUclips channel MAJER. Kid is stupid good, and has this natural way of skating that is really awkward at times but at other times is just insane looking.
There needs to be a love letter to TNT if we’re gonna talk style..... it’s as gnarly and gritty as gnarly and gritty gets, YET, as smooth as FUCKING SMOOTH could ever godamn be!! Watching TNT rip a skatepark is sooo beautifully gnarly!!! He’s the king of the “style” talk IMO
love navarrettes style he skates so effortlessly, like when you roll down the street and youre lookin straight rather than that "power stance" with your shoulders aligned to your feet anyone know what i mean?
yeah well..that's the most obvious one. I agree. but still give him credit. dude has allot of talent no doubt about it. and he doesn't look like someone who could take a slam like a total machine but he does over and over again. and that's why I respect him + he seems like a really good person. anyone else on your mind ?
We had a new half pipe open up in the 80's were in live and there were two groups of skater's , The clean I eat dinner with mum and dad every night skaters who grow up to be cops and bankers , then we had the kids that had fuck all , loved black flag, GBH, and all that other fucking sick shit ! Well the day in opened all the clean crew were there with there packed lunch's and there fucking brand new gear , we rocked up after ten or twenty hash cones and beers and fucking ruled that shit . I don't know if that's style but it was fucking funny .
+BEAU CARRALL Yeah that's RAD. Us too, we had a punk band but after practice at 10:pm it was always 40's, street plants and GBH cranked out of a ghetto blaster in some parking lot. I still haven't had as much fun as those days, no matter how much more gnar it is now.
Style is very important to start picking up on, EARLY! . .something a lot of kids now-a-days just don't have (I mean OF COURSE there are new riders with incredible style) HOWEVER; IT IS ALSO, one thing , THAT SOME dudes, [that can do every trick] forget, totally. . I think it is because, every kid gets a car, or one of their friends have a car, and they don't need to just skate for transportation. they just drive from one of the million skateparks. So "some" of the kids today, don't learn how to actually ride the board smoothly, or even learn to just cruise, for block to block, from spot to spot. . . Style is one thing I can still hang my hat on after skating for 30 years. . im not blowing smoke up my own a$$ , cause I kinda suck now. im a bit out of shape, I partied too much for 2 decades, and my hiatuses once I hit 30 years old are longer and longer. . . hah But I still like to get out there and rip. . And even the newer skater dudes and brand new groms ask me about my style; almost every time I go out skating. Of course I really started skating hard in the early 90s. So I do have a bit of the "gangster" skateboard style. So I was totally emulating other people. . . think: back bent, arms down Beagle . . lul. . nowadays it is just second nature and not something I try and do. It is just the way I skate. So I bet it looks a lot better and smoother than when I was actually trying to do it. however; Back in the day, it absolutely was something I concentrated on. landinding bolts with my back bent and my hands at my waist or below. . a lot of videos of myself, I kind of cringe cause it is waaaaaay over exaggerated, and it was definitely forced. Today though, the exaggeration isn't there and im at a happy medium of not arching my back so much, or trying to make sure my hands were all the way down at my knees. . LMAo sorry for the rant. but it just gets me mad , when a kid can land 50 tricks in a game of skate rolling at 1mph, but if you watch them push down a city block, it looks like they are day one on a board :0 :) last thing I must add is, FOR SOME SKATERS, swith mongo push looks super awesome . . even look at Carroll back in the day. . his switch mongo push was super Stylish! Peace!!
RIP Grossman thanks for everything. I'm 25 off drugs and skating again
That's kind of rad that both of you have pfp's with Hitler mustaches. Stay fucked.
W
Fuck yes man same here, RIP Grosso
OK Hitler! Piff
"lance mountain has his own style, it almost likes he's surfing sometimes and homeboy can't even surft, he has to go out with a boogie board and snorkel"
-steve olson
haha best thing ever
Can totally imagine lance mountain on a boogie board with a snorkel
I laughed my ass off after hearing Olson comment on Lance not being able to surf.
"Actual reenactment" 😂😂 R.I.P Grosso ❤ we miss you buddy!
Gino's push, Kenny's flow, Cardiel's rawness, Huf's pop, Kalis' swagger, Rune's pump, Emman's power, Ave's aggression, and Gonz's spontaneity.
...and Grecos wardrobe. :p
And Christian Hosois photo flash capability, you can't discuss style without hosoi
🙌
Rest well, Grosso. Love your contributions.
Rest in peace, Shogo Kubo... I always tried to emulate his style when I was a teenager in the late 70s 🤘😎
Duane petter’s has his unique style!!! Luv it!!!
Miss this guy

alot of this stuff is from the generation just before penny, likely why he was not mentioned
oh man theres so many they couldnt name them all
If you will notice they spent over half the video talking about 80s vert skaters, I don't think it's their area of expertise
Penny was/is the man he was the master of effortless before guys like Antwuan.
Mike Vallely for sure....controlled sketch @ it's finest!!
Listening to Cardiel describe Neil Blender is just delightful.

its raining here but I wait till night then skate the elementary school since it has overhangs
Waxed lipslide or red curb and many pad is all one needs with overhangs on rainy days.
Jeff a little photo credit for me would have been nice at the end??? You used some of my best shots of Duane and one was an iconic shot.
You shred Ted, thanks for all you do!
I'm surprised no one mentioned Mile Vallely.
I believe cause nobody was trying to make a joke
Totally a re-upload, I hope a new episode comes out soon. I can't get enough of this show!
What a good episode of Love letters because believe me for 28 years this has been missing from skateboarding....
I wish the stupid-ass judges would consider style in contests...it's all about how many spins you can do now and you can have the worst style in the world...
Friggin' Olson! Awesome!!!
I also always liked Daewon's style when it came to manual tricks. Nobody looked that perfect. Almost not-style because of how perfect it is, but it is.
Wow fkn rad memories bro🤘🤘
I really wish some pro surfer would do a "letters" show like this for surfing. Christian Fletcher, perhaps.
I don't surf but that seems pretty sicl
*sick
that would be super sick
+91750fast Occy is doing a interview show with surfers in Billabong youtube page, lots of good stuff in there
watching Bobby Worrest videos inspired me to revisit this episode of Loveletters.
Tom Penny
I will always miss you my friend. Love ya JG.
When they ride even the songs sound better..because of their style..compared TO other skaters ..thanx from Italia
Sick Loveletter. My favorite to date ... Lance Mountain has great style for sure, and Tony Alva with that pure steez. And Salba, Duane, Hosoi... Each of them have different styles, but they are all sick.

Miller's style is the opposite of Duane's, plus Miller was a kid back then.
What's the song name at 00:22?
rieder, gillette , janoski and evan smith have one of the best styles of this day in my opinion
dude it's just an opinion man. like tastes in music. who are you to decide whats good or not?

That he had the first 'BIO' frontside air

Christian Hosoi STILL has the sickest style on a skateboard
Gotta add Blaize Blouin. He had style for miles... RIP.
I wonder who grosso was talking about at the end.
