This one of the cult classics in hip hop

i’d say so. one of a kind. i’ve delved into the meaning of each song and read every bit of text accompanied with the album. its so fascinating. the 80s synths, the occasional lofi feel, the atmospheric sound, the acoustics, the left and right references, double and triple entendres, rnb soul, electronic trap, sfx .... while the music is pleasant and entertaining.....the album at the same is ever changing, lonely, real, introspective, and kind of is meant to be an overload on your senses as he does pack a whole lot of themes, storyline, and little references intro this album/project.

Omar Graves look up The Alien Theory. The Alien in the story is an allegory for how the Internet is slowly taking over society

    • @BRUCEWAYNE-yo8yr
      @BRUCEWAYNE-yo8yr 4 года назад +13

Omar Graves it’s up for interpretation. but not so simply put .... its about the internet and the best and worst parts of living in the internet age. but really its a mixture of that and the screenplay ... the album is supposed to be a soundtrack that accompanied the screenplay. the screenplay is a part 2 to the boy in the CAMP album ... the boy a character thats is supposed to represent donald (to an extent) ... the boy is played by Jaden Smith as we see in the 2014 EP ... but i believe the boy is in a way supposed to be very similar to donald as well as someone who is lonely, rich, closed off, and wrapped up in the whole internet age thing .... so again ... BTI is like a soundtrack to a sequence of events and emotions that happen to the boy ... i recommend reading the screenplay and watch “CLAPPING FOR THE WRONG REASONS” on YT ... obviously u can listen to the album as an album ... but Donald did release alot for the roll out and everything seems thought out......like how when he was promoting the album he wore alot of the same clothes .... to push the idea of a character having a certain look we’re accustomed to

here’s a rundown on all the supplementary material for this album:
    -the screenplay + video clips
-yaphet kotto and [no mouth emoji]: videos that announced the album
-clapping for the wrong reasons: features the mansion where the album was created
-3005 lyric video: basically lost media at this point
-the various music videos: some of which weave a narrative where glover becomes infected by something and becomes a monster. this narrative is later continued in the “sober” music video
-a couple of interviews from this period where glover assumes the persona of “the boy” from the screenplay accompanied by some amazing freestyles.
people have included even more content from this period in the replies

you should listen to some of the loosies he dropped around the same time as this album, too: centipede, yaphet kotto, what kind of love, secret track, etc. these songs really help contextualize his head space during this era outside of the album’s world, imo, especially yaphet kotto and centipede

I like most of his early music camp and BTI plus two of his mixtapes culdesac and royalty is what really made me listen to bino also some of his unreleased tracks. It was the soundtrack to so many moments when I was becoming an adult. I'm sure others have already mentioned this, but Because The Internet is a concept album that is accompanied by a screenplay by Glover (which is why the tracks have a numeral next to it) and serves as a sequel to Camp, his first album, and the story of "the Boy."

Yo so I first heard this album in like 2014, I wasn't big into music back then i enjoyed it. Looking through the comments now seeing he had a lyric video with Abella Anderson, and the Clapping for the wrong reasons short film has just completely changed how I hear this album. I'm so confused how I've never heard about any of this 😂 it just shows how ahead of his time Gambino was with the rollout of this project and how great he really is

You should definitely check out the interviews he did during this time I feel like they add to the album experience especially if your interested in his psyche because there are sometimes in the interview where he seems to embody the character from Because the Internet because he dressed in similar ways to the characters he played in his music videos at the time and to me just gave off a different vibe than the Donald Glover before this album (but he also could have been going through something during that time) or maybe he was trying to something like Kanye where he changes as a person every album since he took inspiration from him

I would really wonder how Abel and Glover would compliment on each other on a track. I mean we they both can hit the high falsetto, you see Donald do it more on " Awaken, my love", but I think if we get a talking Donald it could be a good track with them.

Saw this video & automatically hit play. This record is one of my favorites of the last decade. I went from thinking it was okay to not liking it to loving it as it aged with me. Weird to think I was a Junior in high school when I bought this on iTunes.
Also, the screenplay is like a hyperbolic extension of Donald & where he was in his life. It starts off as a pseudo-sequel to "Camp", piggybacking off the monologue in "That Power, where he's the last kid on the bus after a humiliating situation with a girl. The script takes an aburdist turn when the kid is picked up by his dad (Played by Rick Ross, btw) in a limo & continues down the rabbithole from there. Again, the script's incredibly weird & absurd but the feelings of loneliness & depression portrayed by "The Boy" (The script's protagonist) mirror many of feelings & problems plaguing Donald's mind at that point in his career. Most of the interviews during this time paint that picture as well. Donald saw "The Boy" as a toxic phase in his life with problems he saw in others (a reason why the bars a huge whiff of deprecation, either towards others or himself) so he created a character, molded in his own self image, to create somewhat of a cautionary tale. Something that spoke to the automative social media age we were entering but also spoke on the issue of us becoming desensitized & detached to world around us (Big reason why he credits himself with his govt. name on the last track. Life has made him disassociate with himself to point where he doesn't really know who he is anymore.)
I know I rambled a lot but this record really is something incredibly dense and interesting to dissect. It took me damn near 3 years before I even came to this conclusion & I feel like BTI is just gonna continue to change & re-contextualize in my mind as I grow older. I'm glad you enjoyed it as you did.
PS - Here's a link to the script & the short film he made along with it, "Clapping for the Wrong Reasons". The Boy's house in the script is based around the house in the short & many of his friends are modeled after Donald's actual friends in the short.
