Remember back in the day of group gatherings how hard it could be to find time in everyone’s busy schedules to congregate? To get together for a week-long ride or some other getaway? Without fail everything would start to slot into place just in time for your best friend to have something come up. You’d try to reschedule and that too would fall apart for one reason or another. The phrase “herding cats” comes to mind. Locking down this group of middleweight adventure bikes was kind of like that. It’s a test we’ve been attempting to schedule for six months. As is always the case, some “friends” are more reliable than others.
But, none of that matters now because here we are with the MVPs of the scorchin’ hot middleweight adventure segment. Never you mind that these “middleweight’s” displacements have continued to swell as is tradition in motorcycling these days. Rather, focus on the real world functionality of these machines. These bikes are lighter, smaller, and more manageable than their 1200cc(+) counterparts, which, at least for me, makes them more enticing to push the envelope off-road.

One thing they failed to touch on: Moto Guzzi is well known for building bikes that last. To my knowledge, the v85tt is the only dual sport with a shaft drive. I love a shaft driven bike. They just last forever with little to no maintenance.
That guzzi engine is bullet proof and battle tested. There’s a reason it’s been essentially the same for a hundred years.
Air cooled engine, longitudinal crank, very little plastic... It’s just a gem of a motorcycle. And it’s Italian.
Italians arent known for reliability, "we are here for a good time not a long time" some italians at some point.
Kudos for running the same tires on all bikes! This is for sure the most important baseline factor in doing a comparison. Well done!
I disagree. Tires that come stock on the bike are the tires that the vast majority of people are going to be using for at least the first couple thousand miles. How's the bike handles on its stock tires is pretty important.
@@DoRC Point taken but for me the first set of tires are not a determining factor as they will be replaced by numerous sets of tires of my choice.
@@thedriver8174 I can understand that if you ride all the time. I just know that a lot of people don't really put that many miles in their bike and some the original set of tires might be the only set of tires they ever experience. No matter what it'll certainly be the first set of tires they experience.
@@DoRC I understand what you are saying and it is true that some people ride very little and the original tires will be the first and long lasting impression they have of the bike. But when you are comparing the abilities of the bikes it is important that the focus is on the bikes and not the tires. Therefor having the same tires on all the bikes levels the playing field and keeps the focus on the bikes.
@@DoRC They sorta put worse tires on didn't they?

The Moto Guzzi comes with luggage for the price listed. Also a few other items like taller windshield for the price. So, it is ready to tour. You still have to spend money on top of the price of the Triumph or BMW to tour.
For 2021 the Moto Guzzi also now comes with tubeless spoked rims.
Personally I would choose the Moto Guzzi, but am still enjoying my Himalayan for off-road exploring.
Not too long ago (OK maybe 20 years) you'd pay good money to get a comparison review like this on DVD so thanks for all the great work guys 👍

Moto guzzi v85 would be my pick all day long!
Just got one, very nimble handling and great balance.
I agree and I'm buying one

Some of this days when the "big" adventures bikes switch to a 1700 cc engine, the "middleweight " bikes are going to be the r1200 gs and such. I remember when a 400 was a "big" bike
But remember, atleast now, the weights don't get heavier
400cc was a big bike -and still is- in the era of 2strokes
Jep, my first Yamaha XT600 43F: 155 Kg/ 340lb, 45 hp...
I remember the days I started of on an 800 cc middleweight sports tourer. (at the time that was the smallest displacement available for non adventure bikes with BMW) Afterwards I've seen the light and went for big adventure tourers to use 99% on the street...
I miss my TT 350 from the 80s !!
Guys, you had the 2020 Guzzi running. The 2021 has a bit more electronic functions, has a small motor change to kill that flat moment at 2000 rpms and new tubeless rims which are also lighter. But overall a great review
T700 all the way, but thank you so much for including the Moto Guzzi...LOVE THAT BIKE
It is an excellent and very fun, fun, fun bike to ride. Service intervals are great, first oil change by 1500km, and till 30,000kms it is just oil changes. Dead simple.
@@gavinhassett479 if you can just keep the electrical stuff alive……but I’d ride one….
Kind of surprise the T 700 was in here, I guess the fact that it's in between so much is a factor. I'm used to seeing it competing with with klr650 and V stroms due to the price bracket
Just simple
Modified if you are more serious
Few had done stock springs round the world!
Mine coming next week !

Solid shootout review from a well rounded group of experience & tastes. T7 got my $$
Calling a nearly $18,000 850cc bike a good value is an interesting statement...
It's a testament to how competent the bike is vs bikes that are far more expensive than it. A BMW K1600 or Goldwing for instance, would be a fantastic touring bike to ride across country, but that Triumph could do it with almost the same comfort and ease, for a lot less.
@@monunyabidness5949 I really doubt they offer the same comfort. I know my R1250GSA is more comfortable than a triumph 900 and the K1600 is more comfortable than my GSA. No experience on the Goldwing. but the goldwing nor the K1600 will be twice as comfortable than the Tiger 900. Diminishing results. For some the engine ain't that important, but quality and comfort can be. When I switched from a 800 to 1200 GS I noticed that the size of the engine is only a small part of the extra price, the quality of parts and the comfort are more important to me than the aditional power.
Well, as compared to a 1250GS, essentially its primary competition.
Crap review.... for a real review go to fortnine. $18K good value????
@@monunyabidness5949 it’s a testament to bike companies buying reviews
That Guzzi is beautiful. Definately pulling at my heart strings.
I agree. I have tried the Triumph, BMW and KTM. They are plasticky and their engines are characterless. The Guzzi has great build quality, a peach of an engine and you can ride it all day. It's got shaft as well.

I'm surprised, this video is so cool and complete in every aspect of the motorcycle. Need more of this video
Should have called it Adventure bikes for rich guys (or guys in hock up to their eyebrows). I had a BMW 800 and the maintenance cost were astronomical. I ride a lot of miles so it added up quickly. Sold the BMW and got a CB500X; I can ride it on everything you guys did in the video and not cringe at the thought of the next maintenance visit. It has enough power for the street and trail but doesn't need any electronics to tame it. It also weighs significantly less that any of the bikes you tested and feels light and nimble in all riding conditions. As an added bonus I no longer feel the need to race everyone because I know at the start that I'd loose, so it keeps me safer.
I love these shootouts. I like that you pick different bikes for different riding conditions. I also like that you show which one you would choose if someone tossed you the keys and also if you had to write the check out of your bank account. These are important decisions to consider when getting a bike. Give us more of these.
Moto Guzzi: Stylish and amazing tourer.
KTM: State-of-the-art insanity but ugly AF.
BMW: Excellent all rounder, a bit bland.
Triumph: Excellent all rounder, not bland at all!
Yamaha: You simply cannot afford not having it. The most impressive motorcycle in recent years, all things considered.
Best review of the middle weights! Having common tires was key! I loved that one having 50/50s and others having 90/10s wasn't an issue. I have the 850 GSA and it is best for me. I commute during the week, tour with my wife occasionally and BDR type of roads on the weekends. It is a wonderful motorcycle for all of that!
With same tires, that’s a good comparison. Thanks for the good job!
One thing reviewers usually forget to mention is the v85tt travel comes with semi hard panniers and the adventure model which costs less, comes aluminum rear box and side panniers, plus still has cruise control. Best value, most comfortable tourer, works for average and below average height guys, and easiest to work on yourself in my non-expert opinion.
FWIW, we did mention that the V85TT Travel came with bags, but we left them behind to save weight on the shootout. Thanks for your comment.
That's one thing that always gets overlooked as reviewers are dazzled by diddling with electronic shocks they'll soon need a 2nd mortgage on their house to afford to replace: SIMPLICITY.
@@saddle8bag Yep. Air cooled, shaft drive, and seemingly easy to work yourself. There's no dealers in my area anymore but being easy to work on I shouldn't need one.
@@StockySnail Exactly. As long as the parts can be mailed, pretty simply DIY projects.
For something a little more cumbersome like changing fork oil, it should be cake for any metric bike dealer.
@@saddle8bag I have the luck of living just across a bridge from an MG dealer, it's a seriously tempting bike especially since I'm shorter in the leg
I have an all black Tenere 700 and I love it. You all did a good job breaking them down to each feature and definitely agree with everyone about using the same tires. Forgot to mention the fully adjustable suspension on the Yamaha and the removable rubber on the pegs. Well done tho. I watched the whole thing.
Brilliant review, probably the best I've seen. Great how positive you all were about all of the bikes. I personally own the Tenere which I love, but I've also test ridden the Guzzi and Triumph, which I also thought were great bikes!
Like the longer format. Honestly, a shootout like this is inadequately covered in just a 20-25 minute piece in my humble estimation. Great job on this one.
I’m so happy Moto Guzzi is back. The V85tt is a great and unique offering that has a lot going for it. Great value too.
Honda needs a 750 Africa twin
Thanks for this comparison and great sum up. Love to see that you have fun together as well, an important advride factor.
Heart says Guzzi but mind says T7..
Guzzi is damn beautiful..
Motorcyclists have never had it better than now. What amazing choices we all have! Thanks for a great and helpful review! I still can't decide....
Guzzi by far the coolest ride! Of course I say this impartially as a very happy owner of one!
I was lucky enough to get my order in for the T7 last May. Received my bike in July and have been so happy! Previously owned a Tiger 800XCX. I do miss the buttery smooth triple, but I have nothing to complain about with this little Xplane engine. I ride with 790’s and 1200 boxers and never feel I can’t keep up. So fun and easy to ride in the dirt.
my head says buy the Tenere 700 but id definitely buy the Moto Guzzy. That thing looks great.
Well done, guys! Glad to see the Moto Guzzi included.
You never need to apologize for giving great content. Time well spent. I'd buy two Yamaha and ride with my buddy (my son).
I'm in the market for updating my 11 year old 800 GS, and i gotta say, this video was extremely helpful and also entertaining!
Solid mix of experiences and tastes. The only weaknesses were the jokes and not enough crashes! lol! Great Vid, thanks!
Great review and, as others have commented, appreciate the longer and in depth review vs. a shorter/cursory review. Been thinking about consolidating from two bikes (DRZ 400 and 1200 GSA) to a middle weight. The video was definitely informative!
Yeay a shootout! And the musics played on every motorcycles introduction haha...
With the shaft drive plus the panniers etc being included in the price, Guzzi V85TT all day
Great test and entertaining to watch. Thanks!
Stopped riding about 20yrs ago and now want to get back and do some adventure riding. I thought I knew what I wanted. Now I just want them all.!! Great video guys.
Great video guys! I love the Tenere 700 even more now!
By far the best bike in this review if you ask me. It is real rugged bike with not a lot of this technology non-sense. Really good value as well. Don't people know that these European bikes are high maintenance and not really durable?
Great review guys. Thank you!
I love these shootouts! Thank you and keep it up please!!!
The yellow gs looks like a strom at first glance
If it only was priced accordingly...
It's as heavy as the vstrom and not even a 1050cc
@@KrustyCream The GS is a very good bike, I don't think they are overly priced. The AT is getting up there too.
..Vstrom yellow graphics 💛..
Guys, that was fun to watch!!! Different characters, motorcycles, knowledge of drivers and desires... Great, so on.
Great review. I like how you discussed the strengths of each bike and specifically commented on street versus dirt.
Guys you gotta love the time you spend with JB, great shootout 👍
I have a T7 what I like best is simple, reliable I'm not afraid of breaking down and not being able to either fix it my self or find someone to work on it, is a simple all trade motocycle. ♥
This is the video I was looking for! Cheers guys!!
Tenere Tenere you are for sure in my Future! Thanks for the Review guys very good analysis and objective criticism. Hopefully Yamaha will add Cruise Control in the future!
This video reminds me of what I love most about motorcycles. Riding and hanging out with real motorcyclist.
My guzzi had that exact flat spot too at around 2,500rpm but a DNA air filter sorted that out along with decat pipe and booster plug, loving my v85
I really need to test ride one. I'd love the simplicity and shaft drive for just getting on and going and going.
I commute, do BDR style rides as well, but also have a 450EXC in the garage for harder off-road trips.
I'm glad you put them all on the same tires. Please keep doing that. It's the only honest way to compare the bikes to each other.
Thanks. I totally dug this comparo.
Stuck to the end. Great roundup and interesting to see different age riders with different priorities. I’m 52 and bought a Super Duke R last October. Kinda regretting not hanging out for the 890 Adv R as I miss the dirt too much.
Out of those bikes I'd pick the Guzzi.
By far the best looking, 2nd cheapest (and it looks at least $5000 better than the cheapest), the only one with shaft drive convenience. In the end it is not even close!
@M.L.D. 1.2.3. I don't think it's fear. I've had plenty of chain drive sport bikes. I keep my bikes very clean and would just prefer to not have to clean and lube the chain, and clean the rear wheel constantly of thrown oil or other-based, chain lube. I had a belt drive bike that was efficient, as you note, easy to maintain, and stayed clean. I was concerned that belt would stretch and need frequent adjustments and replacing, but it did not. I thought it was a great drive solution because it had the advantages of little weight and good efficiency, but low maintenance.
@@greg9076 we just have different priorities is all , thankfully in todays dual sport adv bike market there are so many good choices , seems not so long ago we had very few choices kinda had to make out own
Nice round up...so many good bikes to choose from!. But it's the Tenere for me, after a year of ownership I'm super happy with my T7! Cheers, Steve
Love the Rule Britannia in the backgrounder the Triumph review😆🇬🇧🇬🇧👍
And the winner is every bike! They’re all awesome! Heck of a shootout boys
Great video...full of information! Thanks, guys!
awesome list of bikes, awesome video. thanks guys
Love these shootout videos :)
I think too often we here "It´s a great bike!" for almost any bike tested by anyone. Of course there is no all-around star and of course nowadays they are all "great bikes. So, guess what?! It depends what you want to use it for.
So, in my humble opinion:
on road: 1.) Triumph, 2.)Moto Guzzi 3.)BMW 4.) KTM & Tenere
off-road: 1.) Tenere, 2.) KTM, 3.) Triumph, 4.) BMW, 5.) Moto Guzzi
Combined for the average Touring type as I am , incl. perhaps 10% off road: clearly the Triumph, with the beautiful Moto Guzzi as 2nd.
(And that humble opinion comes from a German! Treason!)
I’ll take the guzzi thanks.
Great comparative review guys. Enjoyed it.
Great review, you guys all work well together!
Great compare and contrast of each of these bikes, with a wide variety of experience and preferences represented. I appreciated that. For the record, I bought the Triumph out of this set :)
Excellent comparison! Well done.
Two of my favourite things motorcycles and acoustic blues 😎 great reviews thanks from Ireland ☘️
Brilliant review guys👍 Getting different views from all of you was really helpful.
This was the EXACT review I was needing. Yoy were all smart, entertaining, informative, and were all had different reasons for riding,, though they all make sense. Now, where is my nearest KTM dealership?
Amazing video, excellent comparisons, well done🤟
I'm surprised the V-Strom 650 wasn't included. I see them everywhere.
reliable but getting a little long in the tooth
Same. 10K for the full adventure setup too is a huge sale point
These punch a little higher than the VStrom... in off-road ability as well as displacement. Vstrom 1000 would fit in this pack, and should be there.
No matter how much people push it, the V Strom nor the Versys will never be Adv bikes. The only thing adv it has is the riding position. Cast wheels and 6in of suspension travel is not ADV
@@IRLtrolls Raised eyebrows at the v85 as well then.
Amazing timing, I'm planning to buy an adventure bike in the next few weeks, thank you for the assistance.
If you can find one... I just put a deposit down on a t7, but it probably won't be in until May.
Excellent review of these bikes! Kudos
Just the right amount of harmonica
Very enjoyable video, Ryan is a great front man and moderator 👍
Very great Tests Narrative, at the right point with the footage and seriously telling what the bikes are capable without unnecessary emphasis. Really Great! 👏
What a great shootout, I really enjoyed this particular one as it has three that I am considering and now a fourth being the Tenere. Only the Guzzy doesn’t really appeal to me but I have to admit it’s pretty damn cool!
Your format is spot on, honest reviews and pointing out which type of rider would enjoy which bike and why. I also appreciated modifications you recommend for each.
Now I need to go test ride that Tenere, that 64 hp motor keeping up with the others has me intrigued.
Hey Burns -- when you mention Gina Lollobrigida, these guys have no idea who you're talking about.
But some of us do…..
Well she's 93. Better go with the Triumph for comfort...
Thanks Paul & all, those comments gave me a good laugh! An ageing biker.
"It's got cruise control..." (shows a close-up of an F850 GS without cruise control)
Well done gentleman! What a great time to ride motorcycles!!!! Orange brigade for sure.
It is really nice to see a range of riders abilities and ages when watching a review. Thank you for that. I think weight would be a factor for me especially when panniers and camping gear is added. I really like the tenere and it is brilliant value.
I love my v85tt, but I have the yellow and red with full luggage. My grandson has the KTM. Fun review and always good to see John.
You are all lovely and genuine gentlemen fellas! So much respect to what you have produced. Brava ♥️🙏🏻
Agree, great review. Nice bikes and nice guys. I just wonder how my old Cagiva Elefant 900 i.e. would have done. Not winning the electronic wizardry contest for sure, but it once was a Paris -Dakar winner.
I chose the 900 RP. Great bike
But would also love that 890 for more rowdy days 😉
Awesome comparison, of some awesome mid-weights. :)
This is Thomas how you guys did a great breakdown I did a lot of research on the V 85TT and there is a lot of heritage there and I just like the fit and finish on the bike and I took it out today and gave it a little bit of a hard ride for about a half hour just to kind of see if it would appeal to me and I was very impressed but I’m going to the cat and do a different pipe and lighten it up a tiny bit and I’m short and lowering it a tiny bitAfter that we’ll see
Great comparo, guys!
Great job on the video. I especially liked the little banter at the end there and the variety of riders. Wasn't too long at all in my opinion.
Great format with allot of information that would be useful in buying any of the bikes. I would take the KTM. As I am a dirt bike rider at heat and would go with seat comfort seat and TKC 80 tires.
But these guys above and beyond in terms of motorcycle journalism. Great for a buyer who wants advice
Awesome job guys! Detailed review and I’m still psyched about taking delivery of my 890 Adv R in a few weeks! Ride on!
i would already have an 890r but for all the computer nanny nonsense and the fact that my local dealer sucks ass so anything the dealer has to do i have to take my 1090r a few hours away to a different dealer
@William Moore jealousy is ugly , most of my riding career i rode 5-10+ year old used honda XRL's or KLR's or the like but even then i did not dislike others who could ride new GS's or what not just because i could not///// anyway good luck to you with soo many great choices in this class of bikes today that we did not have not so long ago there has to be 1 that works for you

Good review. Thanks.
GREAT REVIEW GUYS!!! Thanks so much for comparing these middleweight bikes. I am a little torn between the Tiger and the Moto Guzzi. I already have a Tiger 800XCA that I love but the 900 Rally Pro is such an improvement. With that said, as I am getting into my late 50's, I think I may want to switch to a more relaxed but capable ride of the Moto Guzzi and bring my girl with some good Italian wine and music on the Guzzi...Saluti!!
It’s not a real review, bike companies pay these guys to say nice things... guzzi an adventure bike? If your adventure is going to the mall. $18K is a good value??? This is a perfect example of how bike companies buy reviews, and how these idiots take the money and twist the worst piece of heavy shit into a good adventure bike. Go to Fortnine for real reviews.
Well I've been riding my guzzi v 85 tt for a couple weeks and I'm loving it. Whenever i hop off it i just can't keep helping to turn around and just staring at how beautiful it is and the stares it gets at traffic stops and from other bikers are also nice. Out of all the bikes in this shootout i feel like the guzzi looks the best and I'm not even being biased here. Its super comfortable even with my girlfriend at the back and with the panniers and also very affordable in my opinion. Maintenance is a breeze with the shaft drive too.
