  • One of the possible side effects of depersonalization disorder is having poor short-term memory. In this video I explain how and why depersonalization affects your memory. With this understanding it can help alleviate many of the fears surrounding it once we understand why this happens. In this video I present my own model of why this happens based on my recovery journey of 10 years.
This video and this channel, Mental Health Power, is my own opinion based on my own experiences and is not meant to be a substitute for professional medical help. If you are experiencing issues mentioned in this video and it is creating problems in your life please seek help from a qualified therapist.

Another great video man, you have such a wonderful grasp on DPDR, it is the truth, I had years in high school I don’t remember because I was so dissociated and coping with video games. It’s crazy when your mind is clear again. Keep these up, you are the MAN!

It’s intresting how our minds record and stores memory during dp/dr but disables the ability to access them. All because it is too internally focused trying to protect us from stress. I feel like certain information I tried to remember several days earlier can pop up randomly in my head at times where I don’t really have need of them. I’ve made progress enough to have days where my mind works effortlessly like it should.

Thank you so much for this video. Came across your comment in an Fb meme and got curious about how depersonalisation affects our memory. For a long time now I felt that I was bad at retaining my memory and felt embarrassed and ashamed of it, slowly but surely I started feeling detached to everyone I considered close to me. I felt insecure about my bond with them and no longer recalled what brought us closer. I did feel a strong sense of care and appreciation for them and 'recalled' how we used to have fun through the emotions i felt then, but for the life of me no longer remembered what exactly happened or even what we conversed. I used to read alot and enjoyed it, but lately it has been difficult to retain the information I have been reading. Only recently, I tried to really put my focus and attention into the thing or experience I want to remember and I suppose its working? Afterwards I'd try my best to recall and will myself not to forget the experiences or things most significant to me I try my best to recall often and so now I feel I dont forget as much or as badly as I did before.
Again thank you, sorry for the long comment😅 I felt now this video helped clarify my worries and somehow justified what I experienced before.

Wow, I can't thank you enough for making these videos. I've seen this and other topics explained by other mental health professionals but I think your combination of detailed illustration, clear communication and of course having actually experiences these things really make this content easy to understand for me. I relate to basically everything you have said, the inablility to remember things, to focus on anything, to learn, a horrible perception of time, really affected my identity because I feel so detached from most things it's hard to know who I am, it's also really hard for me to watch any kind of show and stay focused and enjoy it, reading is very difficult, I also heard you mention 'visual haze', I'm not sure exactly what it is but I experience this thing where I look at stuff and it just looks foggy and I can't exactly say what i'm looking at with any degree of confidence, for example if I am driving and I look in the side mirrors to know if it is safe to switch lanes I can often find It very difficult to decide if it is indeed safe to do so because it looks foggy. I don't know of that is indeed what you meant by visual haze but I will look into it more. Sorry for the rant, just felt good to have a better understanding of these things and be able to Express them, you are right in that the fear associated with not understanding is one of the most difficult things. I've had these symptoms for years now but I think during quarantine things worsened. Thank you so much again, love from Trinidad (Caribbean)

Curiously, I have retaken German learning too but it doesn't happen to me. Maybe because I started with German long ago before this DP times? Very useful video, keep going. Greetings from Peru.

@@HeartAndSoulOfHipHop In the past I did have experiences with finding it hard to remember things accurately yes, it did feel like memories were distorted. I think this is simply because when we can't focus we dont take in the information properly. Focus on reducing stress, anxiety and calming your mind - it takes time but the moment I was able to start doing this my memory gradually improved - simply because my mind was able to focus and take in information to later recall. When we are in the anxiety/stress state and may not notice it, our mind becomes preoccupied with the symptoms and thats why i find, it was hard to remember things.
