Finally, a Machine56 video! I'm really glad you mentioned that the brand's goal is to be cyber futuristic streetwear. They were never trying to be a techwear brand, and I think stuff like this should be in its own genre. Definitely adjacent to techwear but ultimately seperate. I own two jackets from them and I am more than happy. Their graphics really speak to me and I'm very glad I got introduced to this style of clothing through them!

Glad you like their stuff and appreciate your thoughts 🙏 it's a shame the whole cyberpunk/techwear/etc. clothing space has become quite hard to navigate for anyone who isn't super familiar with all the brands - I agree it makes sense for them to be considered separately, but to the untrained eye people see surface-level similarities to 'performance' brands and lump it all together

M56 is the OG of this "style" . everyone tries to imitate this style
ive been following him since the deviantart days . ive seen his evolution . and of course . his helmets / masks wich i own 3 of them
its not Techwear . this has beeb established several times by the brand . its more of a art , and a bit of a cosplay thing . there where some comics about the whole "bonehead" thing
lots of brands tries to imitate the aesthetics . the vectors and all that . but they dont quite get it as good as M56 does . and it shows

Ant is absolutely right about the breathability, I got the B/type cropped bomber jacket and it hardly breathes - you will get sweaty in it. The hood on that model is actually detachable so some functionality will depend on the type of jacket you get. It's a really fun statement piece that gets a lot of compliments, but it's not for everyday wear.

So a lot of people have mentioned this already, but I'm also going to pile on. Brands like this (and holy grail) are not some taobao dropship cheap "techwear" product. They are genuine brands that try to make cyberpunk (or dystopian militaristic in Holy Grail's case) items. Not performance-based techwear even though the inspiration between the two is clear. Point being these guys are legit, theyre just operating in a space parallel and similar to techwear, but not trying to BE techwear. And they're successful at doing what they want to do. When you buy a product from them you will get what youre being advertised. Whereas the dropship brands will advertise something and ship you the cheapest quality products possible without being an outright scam. I just wanted to mention that in case anyone unfamiliar with all these brands and styles wanders across the review.

This has my favorite feature of techwear clothing: . I appreciate the color mix of navy and charcoal with grey and yellow accents; that's a palette that would look at home on a shell jacket from Ralph Lauren, Nautica, Brooks Brothers. Something like this could be a more exotic statement piece in a more restrained, biz caz, techwear materials wardrobe alongside chinos and Oxfords from Lululemon, Outlier, Western Rise. Cut of the over flap is handsome, interesting. A lot of graphics but everything is refined and executed well. Shame that this fabric isn't better but also it's priced fairly given the materials.

I like the idea behind the hanging collarbone/chest strap. Depending on the weight of the item, I could see some interesting utility coming from that, such as hanging a small DSPTCH pouch or a ROOT CO phone/key magreel. I think it'd pull down from the shoulder seam but would be interested in seeing someone attempt looks like this.

Good to see you trying out the M56 brand, your thoughts line up pretty much with how I feel about their stuff - I have two of the bomber/flight jacket type pieces - the B-TYPE3/BK-04 and M56/VR-PANZER_G2 - and one of their single layer shells - the M56/C-TYPE01_WT.
The BK-04 is my preferred of the two bombers, its a simple base padded jacket design without too much 'extraness' other than the many graphic logos - as you pointed out, the hood on this isn't packable or removable which is a gripe point for me. The PANZER jacket is a little too 'much' now I have it, and the clip hardware on the front is distinctly cheap and plasticky.
The TYPE01 shell I do like, its another simple base shape without any contrast colour patches etc, and the graphics feel a little lighter than the ones on the bombers, it also has a removable hood.
I like the jacket you picked up to try out, they have stretched their base design a lot since I bought my jackets a couple years back. The dual-layer look (even though its all one piece) reminded me of the NIKE x MMW two piece crop/gilet (I bought this and couldn't get away with the finicky design, especially for not nearly five hundred quid)
You might look up the FABRIC OF THE UNIVERSE brand if you want to look at another mid-cost Tech/Cyber brand, I have a couple of their hoodies and they are autumn staples for me. They recently released some multi-pocket jogger pants that I have cast an eye on more than once.

Thanks so much for your detailed thoughts! I can see the similarity there with the MMW stuff aesthetically - I can imagine it being a bit of a pain if the sections are physically separate though.
I've seen FOTU around quite a lot - similar from a graphic/aesthetic perspective but seems more like they're just focusing on cotton stuff rather than water resistant pieces or 'proper' outerwear as such.

I just picked up a pants/jacket combo from them two weeks ago. Don’t have the items in front of me, but it’s the pants with the huge front pockets and the jacket with the removable hood, if that helps. I got them specifically because of how costume-like they were because I enjoy that bold, unabashed cyberpunk aesthetic. I feel like if it was more subtle, the effect would feel cheaper and I would have passed them by.
Full credit to Antwon for helping me navigate through the techwear space these last few years. I own a lot more traditional and performant pieces that I wear regularly. But just getting comfortable thinking about fashion led me to develop the courage to try more bold styles that I feel actually reflect who I am as a person.
The jacket is essentially as described in the video. The nylon feels good against the skin, but of course makes plenty of “techwear noise”. XL fits me perfectly at 188cm tall. I wasn’t paying close enough attention and was a little surprised that the pants were cotton. However, while that of course means they are the opposite of waterproof, the material is actually incredibly soft and quite pleasant feeling on my legs. It contrasts a bit with the jacket, but I think in a good way. XL fits decent, a bit loose in the waist, but the belt works very well. A little short in the legs, but the tight tapering begs for high-top sneakers or 8” boots, so that’s not a huge issue.

    • @ThisIsAntwon
      @ThisIsAntwon  2 года назад

Thanks very much for the review! Glad to hear you're happy with the pieces - to be honest at this price point cotton is probably a better material for pants as 'water resistant' stuff tends to be a lot less comfortable

I actually have two M56 jackets, one being the M56MW-GRACE03 Maliwan jacket, and the other being the RN-F1[VT], and I've found both of them to be wonderful.
While the Maliwan jacket doesn't get as much use these days, and needs some TLC to restore the waterproofing and fix the pockets (damange which was my fault), the fact that I've had the jacket for nearly 10 years and still smile every time I see it or put it on is a testament to the quality. The RN-F1, on the other hand, is my main rainjacket. I keep the waterproofing freshened up and grab it whenever I'll be in rainy conditions and I want a bit more heat retention, and I've been getting more pieces and accessories to go along with it. The design has supplemented my fashion theming, working for multiple scenarios and builds, and based on the quality, I suspect I'll be using this jacket for many years to come.

I'm super biased as I'm a massive Machine56 fan, I own three of the helmets, a half mask, and several full outfits worth of their clothing (in fact, they're the only visibly branded items in my entire closet), so hold my opinion in that context:
I find it so odd and frustrating that anyone would consider this type of clothing "techwear" in any capacity. Why would anything with the prime directive of being functional be designed with such a maximal aesthetic? It is very clearly cosplay that happens to be made to a standard of quality suitable for genuine everyday wear, which is an important distinction when most cosplay is about half as wearable and twice as disposable as the average condom. And yeah, being art, it's definitely not for everyone (I would argue that if it was meant to be, it would cease to be art in the first place), and you generally have to be a certain type of person (edgy, young, fit) to pull off the look.
That being said, I appreciate the thorough and unbiased review, even though this sort of product is kind of ill-suited and out of place to be judged by your typical standard, as you acknowledge. Your humor is genuinely funny and smart instead of being reductive and ignorant, and your criticism is completely justified and accurate - even I openly admit the quality is nowhere near perfect, and I would go as far as to say that their bags, which I own several of, are generally kind of dysfunctional and mostly just for looks. It's all mostly solid quality though, and you totally get what you pay for; at the end of the day, can you really demand more than that?
(You should absolutely try to get a helmet someday, though - they're so high quality and beautiful in person that there's just nothing else quite like them - that's where you really see what this brand is trying to accomplish - they just sell out in less than half an hour, so you have to be in the know, ;p.)

Dang dude, just checked out their site because of this vid, and I'm totally floored. I didn't know this brand existed and me being a big cyberpunk & Fzero fan well lets just say I'm about to update my wardrobe. Good to hear that the quality is pretty good, thanks for checking it out.

owned the jacket and i love it! it is actually pretty comfortable if you use it for riding bikes, especially on colder climate. though i'm pretty sure it won't stand a chance if compared with the likes of the actual outdoor garments.
i just bought it for the visual aesthetics, but got the jacket i can actually use for rides, so that's a plus for me :>

I own a few pieces from M56. Definitely streetwear functional but wouldn't do any hiking in anything. For fear of messing up the graphics. Your basically paying for a lil comfort, alot of style with more of the artist's graphics in cost. Definitely worth owning a few if you're into cyberpunk shyte.

I have owned several 50 60 pants and they pretty comfortable. The sl runners are comfortable, and warm, and ventilate nicely. The drawbacks are that they ride down when running or walking for long distances in the back and the spandex leggings are prone to piling from friction which really looks awful and takes away from the techwear look. Piling does not look good on it at all, but luckily it's not very noticeable. I am happy with them all in all and feel they are fashionable, comfortable amd practical overall. I would buy them as a fashion piece. The price and downsides I've listed make them less than perfect for the price tag, but they are very wearable amd I do not regret my purchases at all.

I have owned far more expensive and less practical lower quality prices. I'd give it an 8/10 personally. I'm happy with them. My sl runners are on of my favorites

Hate to break it to you, but I think the katakana used, "ブラック●デス●ランナー", translates to "Black Death Runner". Also, the kanji that's on the yellow tab on the hood (and other places) is 五 "5" and 六 "6". Thanks for the review of the jacket though, I always love your content and reviews and had been wondering about this brand for a while.

I have a pair of pants from their AliExpress store (there's a review on them somewhere perhaps a year or so ago) and yeah it's the same stuff you get everywhere else. What they do is buy OEM products and have them updated with their branding, so it's the same stuff but has 'Aelfric Eden' written on it instead of another brand

Coming across M56 is what introduced me to this whole subgenre. It very much reminded me of Akira, which I thought was very very cool as a good. I do agree that it does move into the realm of being very cheesy with it's graphics and style. But most fashion styles are pretty cheesy anyway since they're usually about the wearer playing out a fantasy in their head. Like this is no less cringe than someone going hardcore cowboy despite never having even seen a cow, much less herded one.
With that said I found that I really like the style. It's great when I'm doing photo shoots. I bring out one of the jackets and the models really like them. And as on-the-nose as it is, I think the fact that it's consistent across all of their clothes and is really kind of the whole point of the brand makes it totally okay. It doesn't feel like a gimmick.
Ultimately my biggest gripe with M56 is the same one I have with similar brands which is that their inventory is very limited. I don't know what the goal is, but going to their website and seeing that 80% of their inventory is out of stock doesn't appeal to me very much. Better to just remove it from the site and have a cleaner browsing experience.

To add little something (from a guy that have 3 pair of pants and 6 jackets) from them.
The support and client services is quite nice, on one of my order they made a mistake (i bought a pair of pant and a jacket) my pack arrive with two jackets and no pant, they told me to kepp the addirional jacket and sended me tha pant mising.
I was expecting a heavy process but they were super nice and sweet.
For the quality, i would say the rain zipper are quite fragile, and some older model break easily.
I would say i wear my stuff a lot, but the jacket that keep up the most was the bomber model, and also my oldest purchase.
I would say you pay for an esthetic over the quality, but also quality product are now more 300 - 400... for a goid jacket soo

M56 IS the OG of the cyberpunk aesthetic that inspired a lot of techware enthusiasts. But thing is many others have never been able to capture the M56 style as well, if not even in quality.
Of course M56 never claims to be strictly preformace ware, they are more so quality fashion pieces that do offer some good wearing feel that do not feel like cheapknocks that will tear within a few wears.
I own a few M56 stuff. I LOVE it and have been happy with my jackets and I always get compliments about them in public. But if you're looking for something more subtle and more aimed to preformace and rugged use, I would suggest something else but at the same time, I dont think anyone would be disappointed with M56 if you are into the 2077 cyberpunk look!
Again, many knockoffs have tried to emulate M56, but very few to it to quality and price.

Glad you like your stuff! And yes, it really does emulate cyberpunk aesthetics pretty well relative to most stuff out there. Appreciate your thoughts on the brand 🙏

These guys & Holy Grail could learn a thing or two about technical fabrics, sizing and a little subtlety and then I would consider grabbing or recommend them. Their graphics are nice but could use a bit of resizing and reduce count. A little hookup with Gore-tex, Schoeller or Toray and it's a W.
