This game is just a magic version of the Kim Kardashian game. I also hate how if you choose Slytherin, Snape still hates you, Merula is happy about you losing House points even though you're in the same damn house, and Rowan is in Slytherin too even though it doesn't match her personality. They tried to explain it as my brother got expelled and there's rumors about him, everyone hates me for that, but there's no reason why Snape and Merula should sabotage their own house. One thing I liked about it, I used my real name for the game and I finally got to see my name on a Hogwarts letter. I took a screenshot.

Barnaby and Liz are sweethearts. Ismelda may have been shown as a dangerous girl, but she's cool too! And Merula may be the antagonist, but she isn't even that bad. And starting year 5, Merula is actually on better terms with MC.
The most frustrating part is that the characters, plot, and interactions are so great and interesting, and there are so many great customisations, but the entire game is ruined by the complete lack of any gameplay, save for one duelling mini game
I was actually in Ravenclaw, so I just thought they used a different character for each house as she fit into Ravenclaw perfectly. Is it literally the same character in each house, with a different character model?
Eve Barkes Rowan fits into Slytherin too, she has great ambitions to be the youngest professor at Hogwarts. She is also extremely loyal to all her friends and works very hard, which makes her a candidate for Hufflepuff too. And who was the first one to go with the main character on the search for the cursed vaults? Rowan, this making her eligible for Gryffindor. She fits into all the houses in a way.

I actually kinda liked it, but Harry was too OOC and I hated the way they misused time turners. seriously, do they really think Harry Potter, HARRY-FRICKIN-POTTER, would ever say something like "I wish you weren't my son"? Also, I can't imagine Voldemort being humble enough to think he would ever need an heir, although I did like the idea of Delphi/The Augury as a whole. All in all, more like a fanfiction than a real Harry Potter book.
If I was making this game these are the changes I would make: 1. Every decision should make the game different. If you chose Slytherin or Gryffindor, the main conflict would be the same, but the side conflict should be totally different. Also, Snape should still mistreat all student BUT Slytherin, not just all students. I think a really fun side conflict for Slytherin could be along the lines of deciding if or if not to join Merula when she is bullying other kids. 2. For the lessons, the professors would tell important information, and it could be auto-writed into a digital notebook which could be accessed at any time. 3. For main conflict, like when casting a spell, you should have to recall important information fight or defend. 4. Instead of buying clothing to raise your attributes, raising your attributes should unlock your clothing. 5. The creatures would be way less expensive, and instead of paying in notebooks, I think that you could unlock them by getting enough stars in care of magical creatures class, granted that class would have to exist in the game.

I actually like the game but I completely agree with you. I don't think its what we expected. I love the animation but it still don't really make sense. I have a friend who is a slytherin in the game and merula is also a slytherin! Merula would be so delighted if you lost house points but what if you're a slytherin? She'll confront you or something? No, she's still contented at it. I hoped that the lessons actually can teach you something instead of clicked on glowing lights called energy which takes too long to refill. I agree its absolutely lazy writing. Rowan is like Hermione. Ben is like Neville. They're so lazy they can't even think of a proper name. Cursed Vaults? Cursed Ice? Not this The Play That Must Not Be Named thing again. And much more. The only thing I disagree is that nothing can make The Play That Must Not Be Named a piece of art, never.

Got rid of the game recently, it was eating up all my space, and for what? Subpar gameplay. One of my pet peeves is Rowan. Rowan is always whichever gender you are. And always ends up in the same house as you when clearly Rowan deserves to be in Ravenclaw

Would it be so difficult to create a story within the Harry Potter world that takes place in the modern world? There's no need to create a story about Harry's son or a prequel to the events of the original series. They could easily create a new fresh story where magic and technology is combined and each house has a wi-fi password

The thing I don't get is why the high ratings??? For both the book that shall not be named on good reads, and this app on the play store. Who is giving those 5 star reviews??? All Harry Potter fans I talk to in real or online seem to hate the thing, but then there are thousands of people who apparently love it. Who are those people? I want to have a genuine conversation with them. What do they like about it? What lead to that 5 star review? As a person who is a Harry Potter fan in the real sense, i found this game to be a disgrace. The game asks you to give a review in the first five minutes of the game. These first five minutes give you a rather good impression of the game so many people might think the rest of the game is also good and give the game 5 Stars.

I think there should have at least been the option to take a short quiz. When I first started playing, I still thought it was the roleplaying game they had hyped it up to be and I would've gladly taken a little quiz just for that little bit more of immersion. But it wasn't even a roleplaying game to begin with, it was a disappointment all around, in my opinion. 😩
I actually like Hogwarts Mystery. I've been playing it since the beginning and the story has gotten pretty interesting. What I also love is that you befriend people from every house and don't only stick to characters from your own house. The waiting for energy doesn't bother me, waiting for new chapters doesn't bother me that much either, there are ok side quests (I was able to finish almost all of them and I haven't spent any money on the game). So yeah, those are my thoughtd
the "laziness" problem is the same one they had with the play - jkr didn't write it, so expanding the universe beyond what we already know would've been difficult, so they stuck with familiar stuff. though i agree with most of your points, i personally still kinda like the game, and i also think it's getting better with each update. maybe in like a year it'll be actually good^^
You forgot the character design. I’m at the end of year 3( yes, I’ve tolerated it for this long) and my character still had the same features as year one. The only things changing is what I personally do.
I was actually going to mention this and compare it to how different I actually looked in real life, but I just couldn't find a way to get into the script!
Honestly Hogwarts mystery was exactly what I expected. I knew the story was going to be weak because it was not made by a company who knows how to make a game like Hogwarts mystery but what makes jam city unique is that they’re willing to listen to people who play the game and will add their suggestions to the game but it is not the worst game I have ever played

There’s not much to do anyway, I thought this would be fun, like as if I attended hogwarts! But no. 4. If you choose slytherin the enemy, Merula, is in the same house. And she gets happy when you lose house points! That’s just stupid. 5. I actually played the game in every single different house, and everything is the same. What? They didn’t take the time to maybe change a bit if your in a different house, but they don’t!
Rowan has the qualities of all four houses and was scripted to enter whatever house you pick because they help you on your mission. (I called them they because their gender depends on what gender you choose for yourself, girl if you're a girl and boy if you're a boy).

There should’ve been the possibility that you can link up your Pottermore account, that way you can get your house, wand and patronus. Also, the storyline doesn’t make much sense in terms of canon, because the books never mention any Cursed Vaults or Cursed Ice in Hogwarts. Was Rowling even involved with the game?
I wich they could do a Skyrim/The Sims version Of the Harry Potter world on pc or console. A huuuuge open world where you can travel by broom of fast travel with disapparating. Main quest could be you choose the good or bad side and fight for them in mini-missions. Like getting a message to Ilvermorny or killing an informant. Or you could focus on your character and build them a stable life in the middle of the war. You only get materials from the time period of course. Who wouldn’t love Viking wizards?!

With all the technology and as crazy as they could have gone with this game...it is unbelievable that there isn’t even basic exploring with hidden things to find or interactions with other characters unless it is prompted! They could have used the speakers to allow us to say spells out loud combined with wand movements using our phones to cast spells. The classes could have actually been like real classes with mini-tests at the end to pass. Why isn’t Hogwarts express in this game? I have a million questions for these so-called game devs...they nailed the graphics at the expense of any and all interesting gameplay...☹️😣😖

One thing I noticed was that this game had such blatant stereotypes that were ripping off the original story. The typical Slytherin bully, the wimpy Gryffindor friend. The story actually felt interesting because the "Brother" thing felt interesting. But no, they had to ruin it with crappy time limits.
Actually as of 2020 and all the updates the game is quite nice. There's Quidditch and Duelling Club, mini quests where you can become an Animagus or get your own Patronus, more ways to get free energy + the energy bar expands as you go and you can watch adds for resources, you can adopt magical creatures and take care of them. I'm in fifth year now and quite interested how the story evolves. Yes, you have to be patient about the energy (or pay for it) but it's not a game you binge in one night, it's more of an interactive fanfiction story with cool minigames where I can imagine myself in Hogwarts and hang out with Tonks and the others.
The game is a complete and utter bullshit cash grab. The only reason I play it is because it's a guilty pleasure time waster for a few minutes when I'm bored (until I inevitably have to wait 8 hours for my next quest to unlock), but I haven't spent a cent on it and I don't intend to. The storyline really is just Harry Potter rehashed - not to mention that Rowan is Hermione, Ben is Neville, Merula is Draco, Tonks is Fred and George, and Tulip is a prototype of Luna, and of course there's no Ron equivalent because everyone hates Ron -_- I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but I was expecting SOME effort to be put into it.

As someone playing the game starting for the first time this year, it seems to have improved a lot over the years, haha edit: I do agree with the 'canon' stuff though - it does annoy me that the timing of things is a bit off. I'd actually prefer it if things took place maybe 15 or so years before Harry Potter starts school (possibly 1975 - or it could potentially start 1960s before the war and then you get to meet Order of the Phoenix people either before they graduate or when they are young adults and you're a student) - that way you could do all the stuff with all the right professors (minus Snape, maybe Quirrell?) Another edit: Crazy idea - starting year 7 during the 1960s means you get to witness the moon landing while you're at Hogwarts XD That would be epic

The most frustrating part is that the characters, plot, and interactions are so great and interesting, and there are so many great customisations, but the entire game is ruined by the complete lack of any gameplay, save for one duelling mini game

I was actually in Ravenclaw, so I just thought they used a different character for each house as she fit into Ravenclaw perfectly. Is it literally the same character in each house, with a different character model?
Eve Barkes Rowan fits into Slytherin too, she has great ambitions to be the youngest professor at Hogwarts. She is also extremely loyal to all her friends and works very hard, which makes her a candidate for Hufflepuff too. And who was the first one to go with the main character on the search for the cursed vaults? Rowan, this making her eligible for Gryffindor. She fits into all the houses in a way.

The-play-that-must-not-be-named changes the ENTIRE story and Harry's personality. Amos Diggory gone mad after Cedric's death? No, he's mourning but he doesn't lose his mind. Harry said mean things with his kid, the trolley lady is evil, Cedric is a death eater, time traveling and VOLDEMORT HAD *THAT* WITH BELLATRIX WHEN HE WAS 70-YEARS-OLD AND MAKES HER PREGNANT AND GAVE A BIRTH. Does that sounds better than just 'copying' the real books?

I actually kinda liked it, but Harry was too OOC and I hated the way they misused time turners. seriously, do they really think Harry Potter, HARRY-FRICKIN-POTTER, would ever say something like "I wish you weren't my son"? Also, I can't imagine Voldemort being humble enough to think he would ever need an heir, although I did like the idea of Delphi/The Augury as a whole. All in all, more like a fanfiction than a real Harry Potter book.

If I was making this game these are the changes I would make:
1. Every decision should make the game different. If you chose Slytherin or Gryffindor, the main conflict would be the same, but the side conflict should be totally different. Also, Snape should still mistreat all student BUT Slytherin, not just all students. I think a really fun side conflict for Slytherin could be along the lines of deciding if or if not to join Merula when she is bullying other kids.
2. For the lessons, the professors would tell important information, and it could be auto-writed into a digital notebook which could be accessed at any time.
3. For main conflict, like when casting a spell, you should have to recall important information fight or defend.
4. Instead of buying clothing to raise your attributes, raising your attributes should unlock your clothing.
5. The creatures would be way less expensive, and instead of paying in notebooks, I think that you could unlock them by getting enough stars in care of magical creatures class, granted that class would have to exist in the game.
I am sorry if there is any confusion, I JUST unlocked care for magical creatures, eventhough I have been playing for 6 months

Drew this game was never intended to be that. This game was designed for casual mobile game players who liked Harry Potter. There is an open world Pokemon Go style game coming out in November called Wizards Unite.

I've been wanting an open world, possibly multiplayer harry potter game for ages, I thought we were getting close when we got pottermore, I knew the mobile game wouldn't be like that, but I would buy an open world HP game in an instant!
I actually like the game but I completely agree with you. I don't think its what we expected. I love the animation but it still don't really make sense. I have a friend who is a slytherin in the game and merula is also a slytherin! Merula would be so delighted if you lost house points but what if you're a slytherin? She'll confront you or something? No, she's still contented at it. I hoped that the lessons actually can teach you something instead of clicked on glowing lights called energy which takes too long to refill. I agree its absolutely lazy writing. Rowan is like Hermione. Ben is like Neville. They're so lazy they can't even think of a proper name. Cursed Vaults? Cursed Ice? Not this The Play That Must Not Be Named thing again. And much more.
The only thing I disagree is that nothing can make The Play That Must Not Be Named a piece of art, never.

Got rid of the game recently, it was eating up all my space, and for what? Subpar gameplay. One of my pet peeves is Rowan. Rowan is always whichever gender you are. And always ends up in the same house as you when clearly Rowan deserves to be in Ravenclaw
Robert Brookes and Rowan gets on my nerves so much, like they're trying too hard and keep shoving that discount Hermione in my face. Oh and Rowan keeps on talking about how smart he/she is but, in my game at least, she ended Year 2 with -15 house points... How is that even possible?

There's no need to create a story about Harry's son or a prequel to the events of the original series. The thing I don't get is why the high ratings??? For both the book that shall not be named on good reads, and this app on the play store. Who is giving those 5 star reviews??? All Harry Potter fans I talk to in real or online seem to hate the thing, but then there are thousands of people who apparently love it. Who are those people? I want to have a genuine conversation with them. What do they like about it? What lead to that 5 star review? As a person who is a Harry Potter fan in the real sense, i found this game to be a disgrace. For a casual fan, i assume the complete lack of any real game play would be reason enough to for a bad rating. The whole thing is ridiculous.

I think there should have at least been the option to take a short quiz. When I first started playing, I still thought it was the roleplaying game they had hyped it up to be and I would've gladly taken a little quiz just for that little bit more of immersion. But it wasn't even a roleplaying game to begin with, it was a disappointment all around, in my opinion. 😩

I actually like Hogwarts Mystery. I've been playing it since the beginning and the story has gotten pretty interesting. What I also love is that you befriend people from every house and don't only stick to characters from your own house. The waiting for energy doesn't bother me, waiting for new chapters doesn't bother me that much either, there are ok side quests (I was able to finish almost all of them and I haven't spent any money on the game). So yeah, those are my thoughtd
the "laziness" problem is the same one they had with the play - jkr didn't write it, so expanding the universe beyond what we already know would've been difficult, so they stuck with familiar stuff. though i agree with most of your points, i personally still kinda like the game, and i also think it's getting better with each update. maybe in like a year it'll be actually good^^

Honestly Hogwarts mystery was exactly what I expected. I knew the story was going to be weak because it was not made by a company who knows how to make a game like Hogwarts mystery but what makes jam city unique is that they’re willing to listen to people who play the game and will add their suggestions to the game but it is not the worst game I have ever played

Here are a few things that really annoy me in the game:
1. Even if you pick slytherin, Snape treats you like shit. Which is really unrealistic, especially when it comes to the fact that he is the head of slytherin house. In the books (and movies) he treats slytherins better than the other students.
2. Rowan is supposed to be in Ravenclaw, obviously, (you can tell) but she goes along with whatever house you choose. 😑
3. Overall, the game is bad. It’s really boring. There’s not much to do anyway, I thought this would be fun, like as if I attended hogwarts! But no.
4. If you choose slytherin the enemy, Merula, is in the same house. And she gets happy when you lose house points! That’s just stupid.
5. I actually played the game in every single different house, and everything is the same. What? They didn’t take the time to maybe change a bit if your in a different house, but they don’t!
Rowan has the qualities of all four houses and was scripted to enter whatever house you pick because they help you on your mission. (I called them they because their gender depends on what gender you choose for yourself, girl if you're a girl and boy if you're a boy).

There should’ve been the possibility that you can link up your Pottermore account, that way you can get your house, wand and patronus. Also, the storyline doesn’t make much sense in terms of canon, because the books never mention any Cursed Vaults or Cursed Ice in Hogwarts. Was Rowling even involved with the game?

I wich they could do a Skyrim/The Sims version Of the Harry Potter world on pc or console. A huuuuge open world where you can travel by broom of fast travel with disapparating. Main quest could be you choose the good or bad side and fight for them in mini-missions. Like getting a message to Ilvermorny or killing an informant. Or you could focus on your character and build them a stable life in the middle of the war. You only get materials from the time period of course. Who wouldn’t love Viking wizards?!

But bc of coronavirus and quarantine I downloaded it again and Im obsessed aha, I love it and before now I never really thought about the story line being reused, but idc, its getting me through quarantine 😂😂

Give ‘em hell Seamus! With all the technology and as crazy as they could have gone with this game...it is unbelievable that there isn’t even basic exploring with hidden things to find or interactions with other characters unless it is prompted! They could have used the speakers to allow us to say spells out loud combined with wand movements using our phones to cast spells. The classes could have actually been like real classes with mini-tests at the end to pass. Why isn’t Hogwarts express in this game? I have a million questions for these so-called game devs...they nailed the graphics at the expense of any and all interesting gameplay...☹️😣😖

Funniest thing ever: I played the game until the end of year 3, but now I can‘t finish the year because the developers haven‘t released year 4 yet. It just tells me to be patient... They released a game that isn‘t even finished, wtf were they thinking?!

One thing I noticed was that this game had such blatant stereotypes that were ripping off the original story. The typical Slytherin bully, the wimpy Gryffindor friend. The story actually felt interesting because the "Brother" thing felt interesting. But no, they had to ruin it with crappy time limits.

Actually as of 2020 and all the updates the game is quite nice. There's Quidditch and Duelling Club, mini quests where you can become an Animagus or get your own Patronus, more ways to get free energy + the energy bar expands as you go and you can watch adds for resources, you can adopt magical creatures and take care of them. I'm in fifth year now and quite interested how the story evolves. Yes, you have to be patient about the energy (or pay for it) but it's not a game you binge in one night, it's more of an interactive fanfiction story with cool minigames where I can imagine myself in Hogwarts and hang out with Tonks and the others.
I had to wait until my energy refilled before I could watch this 😂
The game is a complete and utter bullshit cash grab. The only reason I play it is because it's a guilty pleasure time waster for a few minutes when I'm bored (until I inevitably have to wait 8 hours for my next quest to unlock), but I haven't spent a cent on it and I don't intend to. The storyline really is just Harry Potter rehashed - not to mention that Rowan is Hermione, Ben is Neville, Merula is Draco, Tonks is Fred and George, and Tulip is a prototype of Luna, and of course there's no Ron equivalent because everyone hates Ron -_- I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but I was expecting SOME effort to be put into it.

As someone playing the game starting for the first time this year, it seems to have improved a lot over the years, haha
edit: I do agree with the 'canon' stuff though - it does annoy me that the timing of things is a bit off. I'd actually prefer it if things took place maybe 15 or so years before Harry Potter starts school (possibly 1975 - or it could potentially start 1960s before the war and then you get to meet Order of the Phoenix people either before they graduate or when they are young adults and you're a student) - that way you could do all the stuff with all the right professors (minus Snape, maybe Quirrell?)
Another edit: Crazy idea - starting year 7 during the 1960s means you get to witness the moon landing while you're at Hogwarts XD That would be epic

Oh my god and in the new updates you can play Gobstones and I was like oh, they included a little mini game. NOPE. You literally just talk. You just click what thing you want to say while your characters presumably play an interesting game in the background. I mean how goddamn lazy can you get.
That's the point I quit.
If you're seriously going to present me with an obvious opportunity to throw a game in the game and then it not BE A GAME I'm done.
There is no game, it's click the blue outline, text box or draw a simple thing to progress a restricted visual novel.
