Does The Cursed Child RUIN The Harry Potter Series?

  • So, what do you think? Did you actually like the Cursed Child and the inclusion of alternate universes in the Harry Potter world? Or do you agree with me and think it ruins the timeline? Let me know in the comments section below!
    I have wanted to make this video on the Cursed Child for a while, but I also wanted to make sure I didn't step out of line and slate it too much. I'm sure it looks great in production, but in my personal opinion an eighth book and the addition of an alternate universe wasn't a necessary inclusion in Harry Potter.
    I hope you enjoyed this video whether you liked Harry Potter and The Cursed Child or not!
    THANKS FOR WATCHING!!!

Idk that's the best way I could think of him being Death Eater. Or him telling the followers to be the Death Eater so Draco doesn't have to. But that will only work if Cedric and Draco were close friends. 😐

    Actually in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood prince. Slughorn tells Hermione that she should be minister of magic, in which Hermione response something along the lines of "No, I want to do something useful with my life," I don't see Hermione to be the type of person to say something like that then COMPLETELY contradict what she said!

      Patricia Keys But Hermione is literally the type of person that doesn't change easily. She's been a certain way for her whole life and suddenly she's doing something that she would never do?! Look the book wasn't even written by Jk Rowling herself, and it didn't stay entirely true to the original story. It's not just Hermione that did something she would never do. Other characters as well.

    • @patriciakeys9935
      @patriciakeys9935 7 лет назад +3

      she was into SPEW, basically a budding social justice warrior-- if that isn't a strong link to her early political leanings, even if she hand't realised it herself at the time, i don't know what is. She took her prefect role super seriously if you remember, a role which is as close to "student council"-ish as you can get in the British system.
      Plus, something earth shattering happened to her between her saying that to slughorn and her marrying Ron: The Battle of Hogwarts (and much more). You can't say the thought of "politics is a powerful tool of change" didn't at least cross her mind once after all the crazy, risky shit she had to do in her life.
      You _can't_ say for certain and that's the truth, and that's what the authors of the Cursed Child relied on. I honestly didn't expect anything less than phenomenal from Hermione, like, of course she'd be the bloody prime minister!

    • @nou174

  • @DarkRainbowSparkleAJ
    @DarkRainbowSparkleAJ 4 года назад +293

    okay, so here's something I kinda thought was a good topic of discussion.
    "Hermione, melting slightly: you wanna marry me again?
    Ron: well, we were only young when we did it the first time and I got very drunk and--well, to be honest, I can't remember much of it and...the truth is--I love you, Hermione Granger, and whatever time says--I'd like the opportunity to say s in front of lots of other people.. again. Sober."
    this right here is a wonderful example of how hard the representation of all the characters flopped. Ron isn't that dumb, and he's been pining for her for literally 7 years straight. I don't think he'd get pissed during their first wedding. he wouldn't ever try to break her heart, or even try to get drunk. at his own wedding. that's not him at all. that's none of the characters--Maybe Draco.
    In the entire book, Ron is played out to be this dumb idiot who's overly protective of his wife, even when it's unwelcome. and let me stop it right there.
    A). I do suppose canonically, he is very protective of her, and a little possessive too. but she doesn't exactly dislike it. she does tell him *not* to attack people for her, but It's not because she dislikes the prospect so much as he might get expelled for it, which is something that she really cares about.
    B). he's not an idiot. He's super good at chess, he's astute and often notices very tiny details, and he supplies Hermione and Harry with very integral information. He. isn't. just. comic. relief.
    C). okay, this one was kinda obvious, but I feel like no one talks about this: RON WOULD NEVER GET DRUNK AT HIS OWN WEDDING. He literally loves Hermione too much. He's probably *always* wanted to marry her and have kids and all that mushy mushy stuff. there's no way in literal *hell* he'd ever get drunk, purposefully, and just break her heart like that.
    this entire line, when I suppose was supposed to be all cutesy, comes off as making him sound like a complete and udder heartless asshole. and I hate it so much. Cursed Child fell flat. ***HARD***
    *Drops mic*
    Alright, that's it for my TED talk.

      There's nothing wrong with learning. The idea of correcting bad spelling is that instead of being a DICK about it, you grow and learn. Getting mad at grammar nazis is basically the same as saying you would rather wallow in your ignorance forever as opposed to getting SMARTER. That's not a good look. Accept it as a chance to learn something, like it seems the OP has, instead of deliberately being an ignorant jerk.

      Would you like some applejacks or cheerios for breakfast? If you choose the applejacks, then you create a timeline and if you choose cheerios you just created a 2nd timeline. Choices and events do matter in creating parallel universes why do you think Harry and Hermione avoided their younger selves? Because seeing them might alter the future or worse kill their future selves unintentionally. If someone sees you that has the potentiality to change the future. Are you really sure Hermione is not going to mention to Ron or Harry about two strange students lurking about in the shadows of the trials? Remember in the alt. universe it did affect her choices so why wouldn't it alter the timeline ever so slightly in the original? You think Hermione who is probably the most stubborn person in Harry Potter is just going to forget seeing a stranger that looks too much like her best friend and not investigate this phenomenon and eventually remember Time Turners and realize oh shit that was Harry's son and keeps that filed away until said child is born. I'm fairly sure that would make the timeline slightly different. Alternative universe is not the type of time travel used before meaning there is multiple paths to reach one solution otherwise no alternative universe would exist so, therefore, The Cursed Child is creating a time travel that creates alt. universes but PoA doesn't because all paths lead to the exact same outcome just the characters and readers only have half the story before the time travel. And just reversing the damage done doesn't mean the butterfly effect just vanishes entirely, the mere presence of Albus in any time before he was born is going to have some effect on the timeline especially since he is messing with the timeline twice at the same time. Look at what happened with the blanket, that still exists in the future but wait a minute that blanket got that stuff on earlier so why didn't they notice the blanket getting burned holes in it earlier? And would that not alter how the events going forward are going to be done? So then tell me how does utilizing the butterfly effect in a story possibly retain the canonicity of the entire series when the simple act of being there is going to alter the timeline exponentially?

    • @fridaylambda3494
      @fridaylambda3494 6 лет назад +1

      And just to be clear, think about Back to the Future. In that movie, the protagonist went back in time messed shit up and came back only to start disappearing so he went back again fixed everything and bam his life improved and this is basically the exact same plot only Harry Potter meaning the canon story has to have altercations thanks to Albus' mucking around.

    One thing I have not yet heard anyone point out about the timeturner in the Harry Potter Series and the timeturner in "The Cursed Child" is that the person using the timeturner in the Series did not return to the present by magic but by reliving the entire time they went back. As a result the boys in "The Cursed Child" should have just vanished never to be heard from again but would have instead have remained in the past to grow up there.

      Milo O'Rourke you are forgetting that Harry was always recognized as James Potter son because he look just like him, except by his eyes. And it is known that Albus is really similar to Harry. So yes, maybe Hermione wouldn't recognize him at the moment as Harry's son, but later in life she would remember, it's Hermione. Also, the plot sucks, it's literally every fanfic they could find and mush it up al together and made a mess. It was poorly written, the plot was weak, the characters were awful, they ruined Cedric, Hermione, Harry and Ron's characters. Just to name a few. It was a fanfic, and it wasn't even a good one. • @nkelly5851
    @nkelly5851 6 лет назад +196

    The Cursed Child was certainly interesting to read. It was, most definitely, like reading a particularly good fanfiction. There are things in the Cursed Child that I always thought would happen after DH and thus consider canon (such as the way Harry and Dudley’s relationship went, and I actually did see Hermione becoming Minister because of how much she’d want to fix how the ministry was run) and there were things I found just plain intriguing (though not necessarily did I consider them canon) like the idea of the alternate world with Snape and the Trolley Witch (that reveal seemed like something JK Rowling would do). But…well. The story as a whole doesn’t seem to work canonically in the Potterverse.
    At the top (or very near the top) of my list of problems with the Cursed Child is HOW THE HECK is there a rumor that Scorpius is Voldemort’s son?! How could so many people jump to that conclusion when if they just used basic math and logic it could be disproved?
    Now, assuming pregnancy works the same way in the wizarding world than it does in ours (and it seems to), a mother will be pregnant about nine months before giving birth. Voldemort died at the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998. The epilogue in DH is 19 years later, in 2017. Scorpius is eleven in the epilogue, being the same age as Albus, so Scorpius was born around 2006. For Scorpius to possibly be Voldemort’s son his mother would’ve had to carry him for EIGHT YEARS. How do so many people in the Cursed Child spread/believe a rumor that this is possible or even likely? Perhaps the craziest of them would’ve jumped to conclusions using other forms of magic as an excuse, like time travel, but remember there were no time turners usable at that time, so time travel isn’t a plausible solution to the issue these dates present in this rumor. No wizard in their right mind would jump to such a conclusion as, “Scorpius Malfoy is Voldemort’s son!” when it’s not possible for that to be true.
    And as for Voldemort having a child at all, it’s just mind boggling. Voldemort doesn’t feel love and doesn’t seem to like children, so I not only can I not see him having a child either purposefully or accidentally, I don’t think he’d take the time off waging a FULL-BLOWN WAR on the wizarding world to do that with Bellatrix Lestrange. I doubt he would do it with anyone, but doing it with her just sounds so out of character. Not to mention that with all of the magical mangling his body and soul has gone through, I don’t think Voldemort was even capable of having children. And we already know Voldemort was over sixty, likely around 70 or 71. At the time of her death in DH, Bellatrix was around 47 or 48. A majority of women can no longer get pregnant at age 45. And until she was broken out after Voldemort’s return, she was in Azkaban for over a decade, which would’ve taken its toll on her body, making it unlikely that she could have a child afterwards even if she wasn’t already the age most women can’t have children. It’s possible they could have had the child before Voldemort tried to kill Harry on Halloween, seeing as we have no exact age for their “daughter” Delphini in the Cursed Child besides being born before May 1998, but though it’s far more possible than her being born after Bellatrix was in Azkaban, it still seems unlikely to me. I can see Bellatrix trying to do something like that, but I can’t see Voldemort agreeing with it. Voldemort’s interactions with Bellatrix in DH seem to show him not really giving her the time of day to do anything with him besides help him take over the world the exact way he wants it taken over. I don’t think he would have bothered doing anything with her like that. He didn’t seem the type to lust after it much and in fact didn’t seem to care.
    The other matter is the time turners. As you said, they break the rules JK Rowling set in the Prisoner of Azkaban for how time works. Not just the time-turners, but time magic itself. Everything that is already is. You can’t change it; it’s already happened. And when they introduce the new time-turners in the Cursed Child, they don’t even suggest that these time-turners have the ability to contradict that time magic. The only thing that they outright say in the Cursed Child that sets these time-turners apart from the old ones is that they can go back years rather than hours-or at least they can go back way further than the other ones could. The way time and magic interact in the Cursed Child is entirely different than it is in the Harry Potter series. It’s different on such a level that I don’t consider their uses of time magic to be in the same universe, aka the Cursed Child happens in a different magical world where time magic uses different rules than in the actual Harry Potter series.
    And on the topic of Cedric, I as a Hufflepuff believe that a member of ANY house has the potential to become evil. Everyone has some good and some evil inside them. As Sirius Black puts it: “The world isn’t split between good people and Death Eaters. We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.”
    Each house has its own strengths, and I think the very nature of Hufflepuff makes it less likely for the members in the house to act on their “dark sides.” The kind of people Hufflepuff holds are those who have the integrity to choose to act on their best qualities over their worst. This is the Hufflepuff quality that Cedric shows on more than one occasion-most notably when concerning the Quidditch match he won against Gryffindor in the Prisoner of Azkaban. He won this match only because Harry has a bad reaction to the dementors by falling off his broom and fainting. Cedric not only recognizes that this was the only reason he won, but he also wanted to give up his win (saying the win belonged to Harry) before he was denied the ability for even a rematch between the two houses for the win. And later, in the Goblet of Fire, when his father is boasting about this exact win, Cedric is uncomfortable with the idea of taking the glory for something he didn’t feel he earned. This is the part of Cedric that I think would make it unlikely for him to become a Death Eater due to humiliation of all things. The Cedric in the books (I’m not so certain about the Cedric in the movies, but the one in the books, yes) would’ve moped about the humiliation a while, but then accepted it and moved on. He would’ve chosen to act on his best qualities over his worst. Cedric is not the type to become a Death Eater and kill someone simply because of humiliation. There are no doubt things that COULD plausibly turn him into a Death Eater, but that, I think, is not one of them.
    Last but not least, I don’t think Cedric was the only one who seemed out of character. In the DH epilogue, we see Harry interacting with his children. Certainly from what is shown, he’s a good father. He sees Albus’s fears regarding the sorting, and addresses them properly. I’ve always gotten the impression that Harry was a good father, albeit a flawed and occasionally awkward one. The Cursed Child seemed to flip this fatherly scene in the epilogue in its head. Suddenly Harry is shown making all the wrong choices when in regards to Al. In the Cursed Child, he seems to be portrayed as a bad father.
    Someone once brought up a valid argument with me about this: that the abusive nature of Harry’s childhood with the Dursleys as well as Vernon’s obviously dismal and in fact non-existent father role in Harry’s life would make Harry’s poor fathering choices in the Cursed Child quite reasonable. But though Harry did have a traumatic childhood with the Dursleys, we can see the ways in which this affected him throughout the series, and from what I’ve seen of Harry by reading those books so many times, he hasn’t let the Dursleys negative presence in his life damage him enough for him to become a “bad father” because of it. And Harry did not in fact have a lack of fatherly figures in his life. There was Remus Lupin, Arthur Weasley, Dumbledore, Hagrid…I don’t quite count Sirius but I’m pretty sure Harry does…and I’m sure there are others that Harry considered to have made a fatherly impact on his life, an impact he would want to also make on his own kids. I actually think he would strive harder to be a good father and be there for his children BECAUSE of the way he grew up.
    So that’s that. I believe the Cursed Child was a good story, but certainly not one that fits into the world that is Harry Potter.

    I don't consider the Cursed Child cannon. I don't like the way Harry treated Albus. The only thing I really liked about it was that Albus was a slytherin and He became friends with Scorpius. Those are the only things I accept as part of the Harry Potter Universe. I feel the worst part of the books (minis the whole mess of time travel that The Doctor couldn't even keep track of) was how Harry basically tossed Albus aside, yeah it kind of was "solved" at the end but I feel like it should have never happened in the first place.

  • @hanarose6265

    I hated how in the alternate universe where Hermione and Ron weren't married, Hermione was the DADA professor. Out of all the subjects she could have been the professor for, I'm positive she wouldn't have chosen that subject. Also, that's basically saying she didn't become the Minister for Magic because she didn't marry Ron? So she needed a husband to be powerful? I adore the Harry Potter series (my friends like to say I'm obsessed) and honestly, when I first read The Cursed Child, I actually liked it. But then when I sort of thought about it, it had way too many plot holes. One more thing, why would Albus decide to save Cedric after Cedric's father comes to talk to his father once? Albus would have grew up with his uncle George talking about Fred all the time but he decided to try and save Cedric?

      That's not even a problem, really. Growing up with knowing one of your uncles is dead won't have as much impact as that conversation Albus overhears. Especially as his reaction is rather impulsive. It's not really thought out, it's just something he wants to do so he will feel better.

    Also all the characters are out of character. Draco Malfoy is the freaking moral compass!
    Harry would never be that bad a father!
    And Ron and Hermione's relationship was reduced to "because Ron is jealous of Krum," which is BS. Just because Rowling thinks their marriage may not work doesn't mean they don't have real feelings for each other.
    And why don't James, Lily, and Rose have more than bit parts? Why do Hugo and the other Weasley grandkids--or other Weasley kids/Molly and Arthur, for that matter?--not appear?

    2. Ron: Ron is more of a chill character, yet in the cursed child he basically replaces Fred (spoilers) because he died! I know Ron makes a couple jokes sometimes but he isn’t supposed to be a reincarnation of Fred 😂
    3. Hermione: I never imagined HERMIONE to be a minister for magic! Of course I think she could be helping out house elves but SHE CANNOT BE a minister for magic
    4. Cedric: When I read what Cedric has become, I just got so mad. I don’t think the writers even read the books! Cedric was a: nice, kind, smart, loyal, responsible. I can’t believe they would make him a death eater because he LOST a STUPID TRIWIZARD TOURNAMENT. I’m really upset about this and I think JK Rowling should have rewrote the story
    Ginny: Ok Ginny I always didn’t like Ginny. She was really irrelevant and I don’t think she would ever assume HARRY said something rude to his son. Yes he did say something rude to Albus but GINNY would not ASSUME
    Albus Potter: He turned into an absolute brat! He isn’t great full to be Harry’s son when he knows Harry is famous. He hates Harry. Plus I didn’t think a POTTER would EVER be in Slytherin!

    Yeah Cedric becoming a death eater was rediculous and unnecessary. They could have written that many Hufflepuffs heard of the cheating In the 2nd task and one of them went on to become a death eater. But not cedrick. But there really shouldn't have been time travel at all. That was the main issue, along with writing that Voldemort had a daughter and with a witch who has no plausible time line in which to have a daughter in the storyline. If Bellatrix had a daughter with Voldemort, why wouldn't she have mentioned this or lorded it over Luscious or other death eaters. Or why would Voldemort's daughter be kept secret?

    The Cursed Child book very obviously takes place in the version of the wizarding world depicted in the film franchise, not the main books. For instance, the maze in the Third Task of the Triwizard Tournament in Cursed Child lacks monsters or obstacles like the one in the books, and the hedges instead attack the people in the maze like in the films. When I got to that part in the book I realized I'm not reading a bonafide Harry Potter sequel, but some sort of sequel to the movie franchise, which I've aways regarded as less-than-canon and a sort of parallel reality from the book series. Adult Harry is kind of an arrogant asshole in Cursed Child as well, which is a vibe one sometimes gets from Daniel Radcliffe's Harry, but
    not so much from the literary Harry. I can't imagine that someone like Harry would actually talk to his kids the way he does and fail to understand life like an ordinary parent. And the stage production of Cursed Child has other elements in addition to the basic outline of the script that differ from the main books, and the film series.
    People forget that there were a few years where Harry Potter existed without the films; all sorts of merchandise and media existed in that time that had nothing to do with the film series or its actors; the films all have widely differing styles that the different directors imparted on the series; and they basically are other people's imaginative take on Rowling's world. Which I suspect Cursed Child also is, though her name is attached to it. Harry Potter was originally a very open-ended concept that people could fill with their own imagination, and I've always felt the movie franchise took that away a lot :(

    • @maggieent3215
      @maggieent3215 7 лет назад

      JamesR Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. It's a little disheartening to see a movie adaptation overshadow the book, even though I still like the Harry Potter films I've seen. Part of the book series' magic comes from the author and the medium and so of course everything else is part of the group franchise and reimagining.

Nothing else exists, no other websites, no other stupid "plays", no retarded short story background information books, it is just the seven original books and no tweets or other dumb ass shit Rowling does will change that.
      If she makes "second editions" of the originals we'll just burn them, reprint, and sell the originals because even though Rowling has become a communist SJW lefty her books are still masterpieces and she can't take that away from her fans. It appears the comment I was responding to has been deleted, but I am being partially serious, although I exaggerated quite a bit for effect. To me, the only books I care about and consider are the original seven. I greatly enjoyed reading them as a child, grew up with them, have read all of them multiple times, and thought they ended very well leaving a nicely finished and complete story that was quite satisfying.
      All these extra things can do is ruin my image of the wonderful books I grew up reading, and they can't add anything to the stories that wasn't already there. Because of this, I choose to ignore all the new crap because I consider it to be just that, crap, and I can hold on to the masterpiece that is the original Harry Potter series even if I've come to despise the author that created them.

    I hate the cursed child. It's more like a fanfic than an actual J.K Rowling story. Harry is too angry, Albus is too rebellious E.C Also I think Delphini is the cursed child. Also I think any die hard fans won't accept anyone, apart from Emma Watson, playing Hermione

    Cursed Child is terrible fanfiction - Voldemort having a daughter is directly from My Immortal, the notorious terrible fanfiction.
    Making Cedric a Death Eater shows that the writers have never actually read the books, just the blurbs!
    The time travel of the Cursed Child is a game changer that totally invalidates the entire series. Now everything could have been solved by this kind of time turner.

    I don't think the characters *IN* Harry Potter know how time turners work. Hermione in PoA says "Clearly there's something that Dumbledore wants us to change!" Except you can't change anything. Considering Hermione had been using it all year and... well she's *Hermione,* that seems pretty weird to me... Theory on that maybe?

    When you say Cedric Diggory could have been Head Boy so wouldn't have become a Death Eater. Tom Riddle and Lucius Malfoy were Prefects but only Tom Riddle became Head Boy. Meaning some of the Dark Side were 'good' during school

      It means they could behave and respect the rules, not that they were good people. Cedric was a genuinely good person with a kind heart. He loved people (his family, his friends and girlfriend) and was loved in return. He could never have been a death eater.

      Though Cedric Diggory was a fantastic person and embodied his house, even the best of people have limits and can be affected by how others around them treat them or make them feel alone. Fear as well can make us do crazy things and Cedric though he didn't like his father boasting could have had fear about not living up to what he thought his father wanted.

    The only thing I feel like people should consider cannon as post hp storyline is 1. scorpius malfoy being the kindest person you'll ever meet and a slytherin soft boy (because hell yeah, also I fluff with the idea of draco malfoy raising his child on actual good morals and not making the same mistakes his parents made with him) and 2. albus and scorpius's friendship because dang it makes me soft. Everything else can rot in
    tartarus.

      I don’t agree with Scorpius being a softie. If he’s a Slytherin, he’s got to have some Slytherin traits. I’d rather have a shy and distrusting Scorpius or a snarky outcasted Scorpius and make Scorpius Albus’s second best friend. Make him more Scorpio, not Cancer.

    If Cedric was a death eater..
    that means he survived
    so he was spared
    so the prophecy is complete
    so there was was no need to mess it up in the maze
    and he definitely survived, because he killed neville
    in the battle of hogwarts
    which is after GoF
    which is when he originally died

    This is what I think happened:
    Jack Thorne and John Tiffany go to JK Rowling and say, "We'd like to make a Harry Potter play. But not about Harry. About Albus and Scorpius. We were thinking that they'd both be in Slytherin."
    JKR: "Oh. What's the conflict going to be?"
    JT&JT: "Well, we were thinking about exploring time turners a little bit, and the dangers of judging people before you get to know them. We're going to have to be really careful to avoid messing with the timeline, though..."
    JKR: "No. No, you won't. You get my approval only on the condition that you fuck with the timeline as much as possible."
    JT&JT: "Wait, really?"
    JKR: "Yes. I told them all that messing with time is a bad idea. I demonstrated that time travel is only safe to use when it preserves the timeline, which is, fortunately, somewhat resilient. But despite all my best efforts, people have been badgering me for the past decade, saying, "Well, they should have used the time-turner more. They should have gone back and killed Voldemort before his rise to power. They should have kept it as an ace-in-the-hole for every time something goes wrong." And I'm sick of it. I want you to end it. Show them all beyond any shadow of a doubt just how awful things get when wizards meddle with time. Make them all suffer for their sins."
    And honestly, I can't blame her. I probably would have done the same thing.

    The reason why I clicked on this video without reading the book or watching the play is because I honestly don't care. I've already heard small things about it and it seems like it's not a big production or something truly interesting like compared to Fantastic Beasts. And I agree, it seems to not fit with the rest of the Harry Potter series at all.

    Just don't accept it as canon. I know that Rowling tweeted requesting it to be accepted as canon however,the book heavily contradicts what she already wrote
    Anyway,there aren't even character profiles of albus and Scorpius in pottermore.
