It's not a lightsaber battle, but I gotta say, in Empire Strikes Back, Yoda vs R2D2 fighting over the lamp was pretty epic. S tier for sure!

Hey Theory, just a heads up if you don't already know this - In the Obi-Wan vs Grievous fight, they had Obi-Wan cut off 2 of Grievous hands really quickly in the fight because they were having trouble filming a fight with a 4 handed being. So they had to get rid of 2 of his hands to make it more manageable.
The final fight with Maul is just as good as the prequel fights just because of its emotional significance
shame Maul went full skitzo. I would have loved to see character develop a bit more and shown us more about the Sith. Woulda been cool to see him in Ashoka.

i don't think he quite made it to the original trilogy and he could have easily been doing other things i mean he was actually filled with green force smoke. whats chopping him in half gonna do? Frankly I thought he was doing well trying to snatch up ezra and some holocrons but then all of sudden hes like ''gotta go to tattoine and kill kenobi''. because thats the only thing that matters... when ya gotta go ya gotta go i guess....

The 2 Luke vs Vader fights for sure. The emotion behind duels make them easily the best. I also appreciate the choreography in those films because every swing had a purpose even if it wasn’t as flashy. The prequel fights are cool but they were too flashy and many swings were meaningless. If we can start getting a mix of the 2 the duels would be perfect. Vader’s choreography in Rogue One and Luke’s in Mando season 2 are great examples of this.
Completely with you. I personally find Anakin v Obi-Wan's fight in RotS to be more style over actual substance, far too long and some of the dialogue is so cringeworthy it pulls you out of what should be an emotional battle. When they start swinging like Tarzan or balancing on those droid's heads it just looks ridiculous. The choreography in the original trilogy is definitely not as flashy but the emotion properly comes through and it feels like every swing matters in both those Luke vs Vader fights.

I can't believe they didn't include that Palpatine extended fight scene in - what a massive loss that was, but so glad this footage was recovered so we can see how it could have been.
Yoda vs. Dooku had that great moment where Yoda pulled his saber with a force pull. I loved that.
For me personally it's Vader vs Luke in ep 6. The music the emotion the location and even the choreography was so great. Excellent atmosphere. Palpatine posing in the background great. Simply the best duel.

The fact it’s that short yet so impactful, while also having a much deeper and poetic meaning is why it’s S tier all day.
I'm sorry but Kylo vs Luke in F tier is INSANE. That fight was baller. And it's the first time in ANY of the Skywalker Saga we see the Force BE USED for knowledge and defense. Luke not being there is the whole point. And for him TO be there, defeats the purpose of the scene. It's the most powerful thing we've ever seen ANYONE do with the Force, and I'll always respect TLJ for having that there. For being BOLD enough to make us THINK and QUESTION what we know about Star Wars.
The Sequel Trilogy has some really good fight scenes. And to put them ALL in the lowest tiers is just...I can't agree with it. I know there's a lot of animosity towards the ST, but I will defend some aspects to them, such as what they explore with the Force Dyad, the cinematography, the music, Kylo vs Luke...it's not all bad. After all there WAS a time where people thought the PT ruined childhoods too. The rest of the list is solid, but does leave out some pretty decent fights too.
He will always shit on anything to do with the sequels. This is not an objective list even though he claims objectivity; it is still a very PT heavy list and a complete disregard of the lightsaber duels in the ST, because he didn’t like the films. Pretty disappointing tbh.
@@gkezele I mean there's nothing wrong with the list itself it IS all opinion, but SWT main problem with these things is how he PRESENTS his opinion. He states it as if it's fact. Like with the Andor situation. To call that "Not Star Wars" because it isn't about Jedi/Sith/Force when he likes bad batch even though that DOESN'T have those things...it's pretentious.
@@TheRibottoStudios I’d be more ok with his opinion of the ST if he graded elements fairly. I don’t care if he didn’t love th movies but to leave them as a side note at the end of the video with no discussion and no reason why they are in E or F other than just being there, it’s pretty low effort.
If I were going to create a tier list I would still discuss my reasons on grading things badly, he just gives 0% effort to even discuss and Disney era stuff, even if it’s to explain what was wrong with it, and it’s getting really old.

Episode sevens fight scenes are fire
I was 15, watching on opening day, and Obi-Wan+Qui Gon vs Maul set to duel of the fates cemented me as a Star Wars fan for life.
Seeing Theory absolutely nut all over his pants while reminiscing on the classic duels is one of the best things I’ve seen.
For me Ray park is the best duellist we have ever seen on screen. What he did against TWO people was just insane. Really hope we get more maul
Yeah it really helps when your opponents take their time and take turns attacking you… and aim for your sword instead of your body. Terrible choreography. There are tons of breakdown videos on YT that expose just how bad that duel is from a swordsmanship perspective.

@@MaiaGothmogThere are definitely a lot of openings that the characters don’t take. In the context of the universe, the Jedi and Sith fight usually duel another 'honourably' (there's even a saber form that Jedi and Sith don’t use because of how cowardly and cheap it is, and it involves turning off one's saber and reactivating it to trick an opponent), and so a lot of the openings are explained using that idea. Regardless of the odd choreography in some parts of the prequel trilogy, for the most part, they look spectacular. When I notice one of those moments, I usually think, 'at least it isn’t as bad as the missing-knife praetorian guard in TLJ', lol.

Those moments of silence and tension building combined with the dark atmosphere and of course the iconic revelation at the end makes it the best for me.

Should've had Ahsoka vs Maul, as well. Ray freaking Park doing the mo-cap for Maul, just... *chef's kiss* And Ahsoka showing just how much she's grown, while also reasonably struggling, she's absolutely the underdog but pulls out a win using all that Anakin taught her. Masterpiece.

I'm surprised Empire is so far down. What makes a great duel is the tension and payoff. And that duel definitely has the highest payoff. And I don't see how any other duel could have more tension. Phantom of Menace definitely has a tense song, but the visuals aren't at the same level as it. Though, the doors is on the same level as Empire.
I think some of the sequels fights should get a bit more credit
Mustafar is really the genesis of the Star Wars we know. Not only is it aesthetically incredible, but it is the moment Vader is created, as is Obi Wan, in a way, the Obi Wan we come to know. Melancholy, but utterly resolute in his training of Luke and fighting the empire to the last. Same goes for Vader.

My favorite will always be the obi-wan vs maul at rebels. It was just a masterpiece. Such o back story between the two characters,the emotions was too much. Obi wan shows that if you stay in the light long enough, nothing and no one can realy defeat you. Thnku for everything swtheory, we love you!

Before watching vid I have to say my #1 would always be Luke vs. Vader ROJ. The entire fate of the galaxy hinging on it, as well as Luke's power being fully revealed when his family is in danger (trying to save Leia and Anakin at the same time). I was a kid in the 80s and watched the ending hundreds of times, never got old.

I prefer Ep I over III, but I have them both almost in the same plane of quality.
Also, I might be wrong or not, but I seem to remember Anakin VS. Obi Wan used Battle of Heroes in Ep III, Duel of Fates was used for Yoda VS. Palpatine in Ep III and, of course, in Ep I for Mail VS. Qui Gon & Obi Wan.

Anakin v Obi-Wan's fight was too over the too for me. They were fighting over molten lava. The swinging is what did it for me. That would, IMO, would move this fight down to an A.

That was the one thing that kept me from totally hating the prequels. Great duels.
I would also give some credit, beyond just Nick Gillard to the Actors, especially Ewan & Haden, who had the ability, but more importantly, put in the work to nail the choreography, so they could show the Actors more & didn’t have to try to do a ton of work arounds, to hide their stunt doubles.
Which allowed them to have more freedom of what they could shoot & use in the final edit.
You could see all the work Hayden put in 20 years ago, still show up in the Ahsoka series, so much so, he made the other actors & new choreographer kinda look bad, by still being able to execute choreography Nick came up with for ROTS.
I watched the whole video from start to finish! And I agree with most and slightly disagree with the rest. But one thing we can all agree on, the Sequel Trilogy’s fights emotional impact were F tier, E at best but only if you’re in a good mood!

Technically, the ROTS duel would be Vader vs. Kenobi I.
One omission perhaps, the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan against Dooku on Oba Diah. The man was outnumbered 75-to-1 and made them all look like fools. It really illustrates that dueling is not all physical, but also a game of wits. Dooku really demonstrates why he was so respected not only for his skill with the blade but his battle intelligence. His flipping the script against the Jedi, by adopting a highly acrobatic posture and forcing them into the opposite of their strengths, and using them to take out half the Pykes for him, is unique. It also shows that the Force is indeed a strong ally against infirmity as Yoda has shown, by running circles around men 1/3 his age.
Kenobi vs Vader’s final fight in the kenobi show was the best and very emotional.

Episode 1 being tied with episode 3 is a real slap in the face to Ray Park.
Luke vs Vader in RoTJ. The last part of it when he embraces his anger with the Williams score fading in is maybe one of the best scenes in any of the films. The cinematography, soundtrack, everything is perfect. Impact and how they filmed 'the stakes' should be a big factor in the scoring.
My top fav fights come from eps 1-3
#1 - Qui Gon, Obi-Wan, and Maul from Phantom Menace
#2 - Yoda, Dooku, and Anakin from Attack of the Clones
#3 - Obi-Wan and Grievous from Revenge of the Sith
#4 - Unrelated to the movies, but Mike Skywalker's lightsaber fights and various form choreography vids are amazing!
Watching these deleted scenes was super cool! Would love to see Nick Gillard back in Star Wars, or at the very least, someone who ACTUALLY has professional lightsaber/sword fighting choreography experience in their resume XD

Anakin vs Dooku 1 could have been better if they didn't have the flashlight tag scene. After anakin cut the cable and anakin and dooku clashed sabers twice, they should have kept that camera angle with a 1 shot before cutting to the exchange leading up to his arm removal.

Ben vs Old Maul is Hands Down the BEST lightsaber duel, from a Fence and HEMA standpoint. So technicall and realistic. The Stance change is NOT Obi wan "traveling trough all the stances he had before", but it already is him fooling Maul in a very traditional Fencing way... c'mon dude.
Ashoka vs Maul and Obi wan vs Maul are the two greatest animated Lightsaber duels in Star Wars history imo
Luke vs. Vader in Empire...one of the most powerful, most atmospheric scenes ever, and led to one of the most famous lines and stunning reveals in movie history. It's definitely #1 for me.
Theory talks about how many times he watch the movies as a kid, that was me with Return of the jedi. To me it was the most complete movie with a defined ending and everything. And all of the different locations the forest Moon of endor, the desert of Tatooine but only for a little bit not the whole entire movie LOL, on a death star, on the ships it's all there. Episode 1's duel is less flashy and driven by spectacle. It looks like they're using realistic and effective techniques, and that puts it over the edge for me. To me, there aren't any other fights like it in Star Wars. That is just Jedi and Sith flat out trying to kill each other.
