*What a stunning wrist watch! This one has real character and of course that band is just so unique. Anyway, much love from beautiful Bangor, Maine where recreational marijuana is legal, home prices are still some of the lowest in the entire western world, the scenery is absolute nirvana and the seafood is the best you will ever taste. Tristan, you are an inspiration to so many fans here in Maine. Have a blessed day!*

I put my SARB035 on an alligator strap and it looks great. My only complaint about the SARB's are that the bracelets leave me unimpressed.

I never owned a watch in my entire life, I'm behind the game. I did some research and came across your channel and watched roughly 5-10 videos in 1 night and I went and bought myself a SARB033 instantly as my first watch ever and there is absolute 0 regrets. Thank you so much, I'm a huge new fan!
PS: The Squale atmos 50 is next on my list. I have an even smaller wrist than yours so I'm hoping that will fit okay on me.

I may have some insight as to your first "hate," that is, why do the Japanese reserve the best quality for the JDM? I just found this review and maybe it's too late to comment, but for what it's worth, here are my thoughts. I have been in Japan now for 12 years and my wife is Japanese, so I think that I have a good understanding of the pulse of Japanese culture. In the west, and more specifically the USA, our primary motivation to buy a product is often based on value; that is, what's the best we can get for the smallest price. The Japanese are different, however. The Japanese primary motivation to buy is more often based on quality, rather than value. The Japanese will pay more money for a given product if the perceived quality is high. (Almost) everything is more expensive in Japan, but also (almost) everything is of higher quality. Shoes, clothing, electronics, customer service, food, even my house! The Japanese are aware that Westerners, Americans in particular, are often more focused on value rather than quality. So with fixed production schedules and finite assembly facilities, I believe that they allocate their higher quality products for those markets that demand higher quality, and allocate their "other" products to markets that demand higher value. Of course, this is all generally speaking, and maybe I'm wrong, but in Japan, high quality is demanded throughout all aspects of the culture. Therefore, it stands to reason that the idea would apply to the Seiko SARB series, of which I am a new proud owner of the 017. Thank you for the excellent channel!

pretty late on from the original post date, but the idea of japanese houses being higher quality is absolutely absurd.
They are timber construction and literally designed to be demolished after 30-40 years.

Your second "hate" really hit me. I own an Alpinist, a Rolex Hulk, and an Aqua Terra. I would probably ask how do swiss companies get out with the ridiculous ammounts they charge for their pieces. For example a rolex explorer compared with the day date 40 in platinum, the difference is way above the cost of the precious metal. And if we compare de explorer with the sarb then again rolex is way too much. Even the best rolex asian replicas are so high quality they make you wonder if we shouldn’t find a price in between ...

Great video TGV. I bought a SARB033 six months ago after watching your first video. I actually started to get tired of it and was going to sell it but instead took off the bracelet and put it on a black alligator strap. Now I absolutely love it!! Pure Class!! Great video! This was the video and watch that turned me onto watch collecting! I initially got turned onto watches by mistake when I accidentally clicked on a review of a Seiko Sea Urchin on an unrelated site about stereos, and then this video came onto my suggested videos feed. Now I own my first automatic (SKX013!) and am obsessing on vintage Seikos and this SARB033! Thank you, TGV (and no thanks?!) for turning me on to a huge and expensive way to procrastinate!!

  • @goldenrool8018
    @goldenrool8018 7 лет назад +3

"...slow release charm...", what a great turn of a phrase which coincides exactly with my own experience.
Before acquiring a SARB033 late last year, I reached out to another collector whom I respect highly to get his opinion. His reponse was an immediate and emphatic "buy", but cautioned me that it was a watch that would not overwhelm at first and would take awhile to fully appreciate. He then went thru many of the same points you covered, the dial, handset, understated yet effective lume, movement and the coup de grace, the equisite case design (the finishing, contours, details). His take was that the SARB was Seiko's response and challenge to the Swiss watchmakers. He was right on all points.
I agree with another of your observations, the SARB is such a compelling value, it now skews the baseline when I look at other watches. As always, you can buy better watches but be prepared to spend a lot more. And then ulimately you have to ask yourself the question, what else am I seeking that the SARB doesn't already provide?
The SARB033 falls into that select group of watches that I cannot ever see a reason to sell. Just like the venerable SKX007/009, every watch afficiando should have one in their collection.
To wrap this up, I would like to offer a different type of analogy using jazz music (yes, jazz!). If you are familiar with the genre, then you should know that Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" is considered by many as the greatest jazz album ever released. It is a work that other jazz giants are frequently measured against, meaning, did they have a "Kind of Blue", few ever did. The ones that come to mind, Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", Stan Getz's "Getz/Gilberto", Brubeck's "Time Out".
The SARB033 is Seiko's "Kind of Blue"...it is that good.

In that initial review you mention, you come across pleasantly surprised by what you saw. It's great to see how the watch has clearly grown on you. In writing my own three-year review I thought about the styling in terms of that market, where I lived for five years. I've come to think of Seiko positioning this as an aspirant's Grand Seiko, geared to the middle-manager salaryman who wants a piece of quiet elegance but isn't trying to outshine the bosses.

Failed miserably.. that made me laugh out loud. Stumbled upon your channel about a week ago . Thank you for all that I have been learning. For years I've said i don't wear watches, I'll wear one when I get my breitling. Now I can and yet I'm such a fan of seiko now!! Thanks again.

I'm big-time late to the game when it comes to the 033. But, I just purchased one from Japan and it should be here in a few weeks. I'm already dying of anticipation. Thanks for the great content. Peace.

I just got my SARB 035 this monday. I absolutely love the reserved size on my somewhat larger wrist. I already have the SKX and a Turtle-reissue. This is my first dressier piece. The cream dial takes a bit of getting used to, but I really wanted something bright for the spring and summer.
I am almost certain I am getting the 033 later this fall though. It just looks so badass on a black leather strap!
Cheers TGV and thanks for a great channel!

Just added this model to my collection. Waiting for Canada Post to deliver it out of backlogged truckloads.... due to the strike. All the best the posties getting their new deal.... Until then, anticipating my Sarb033. Great video by the way! My Seiko's include Orange Monster, 2 modded SKX's and a FFF SNZH....

After owning this watch for a year now the only "issue" that I have is the lume which doesn't last long. Other than that I agree with TGV, really a splendid watch! Totally in love with it to this day.

I just bought this watch before new Sarb033s get hard to get hold of. I am really happy with my purchase, it is a great upgrade from my first automatic watch, the Seiko 5 SNKL23, which I may now reluctantly sell. It's been outclassed by this...a great purchase!

Love the SARB033! However biggest and only issue is the lack of anti-reflection coating -particularly important with black dials.
Btw.. really dig the green leather strap!!

Inspired by you I get a used one today and I can't wait to have it first time in my hands! Regarding value: prices went up since Seiko stopped selling them. Mine ist a little worn already and therefore I got it for about 500 EUR. Less used ones are already above 700 and unused SARBs you don't get under 1000 EUR anymore!! Let's see how the journey continues for this Japanese Icon.

I bought my sarb033 4 months ago and the compliments I get on it are always about how it must have cost so much more then what I paid for it. I love looking down at my wrist every time I wear this. I wasn't big on the bracelet it came on, so I switch it to a leather strap. Makes it look much better.

Hi my favorite watch enthousiast youtuber, the Seiko SARB033 is not only available in the domestic japanese market because i baught it in 2012 in a french official Seiko dealer jeweller in Cannes (french Riviera/Cote d'Azur) without any problem. This super elegant and timeless high quality Seiko model was available on the french Seiko catalogue in 2012 ! But anyway i just bite my fingers now because i sold it one year later to buy a Longines Classic conquest similar model (all stainless steel, 40mm case with black dial) then i sold it too and now i just buy a similar model with the same 6R15 (quite good) movement, the Seiko Presage sarx015 !! You forgot to talk about the very good stailess steel Oyster-like bracelet of the SARB033 witch is very very confortable on the wrist ! Best regards my friend from the UK. A french follower and watch enthousiast

Great review man. I've only been in the watch world for a few months; started off with an Orient Bambino, and very quickly after picked up a SARB033, and man... at first I wasn't sure I liked it, and then after wearing it on a Lizard skin strap for a cocktail party... I can't take it off. I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to bother with other more expensive watches. I almost feel like, what's the point? This thing is so great! I've bought a bunch of straps for it for different purposes, and I just can't stop looking at it. I've been obsessed with it the past few weeks. Thanks for validating my thoughts haha.

Drilled lug holes for sure! Speaking of the Tudor DayDate, I wish the SARB was a smaller 34-35mm size as well
