These watches are 38 mm. Compare that to the newer Presage that is 41 mm or other Seiko automatics that are 42 mm. For some men with smaller wrists, it is worth paying the current price for the SARB 033 at 38 mm instead of a huge diameter that makes it look like you are wearing a tire on your wrist.

This watch (033 anyway) was my High School graduation present, and it is an awesome watch. I hardly ever wear the thing however as I have worked with my hands in one form or another my entire life, and I did not feel comfortable having a $300 seemingly delicate watch in a construction environment, and I was tired at looking at the scratches of my Seiko 5 (Hardlex really doesn't have any more scratch resistance than a Timex mineral crystal in my experience). I have since bought a quartz Seiko SGG729, a 38mm (wears even smaller than the 033) titanium watch with a sapphire crystal, 100mm water resistance, and a navy blue sunburst dial. It has everything I will ever need in a watch, dressy enough to go with a suit, tough enough to wear to work, small enough to get my hands in hard to reach places, and affordable enough so that I don't mind using it for all of these things. If I was only allowed to have one watch it would be the SGG729, I would want more but I could easily settle. I know this was a long and difficult to read comment so I thank you for reading the ravings of madman who loves watches.

I absolutely love my SARBs. I have the 033 (black dial), 065 (Cocktail Time) and the 017 (Alpinist), and while they all share the same rock solid 6r15 movement, each have their own unique character. If the style calls to you, my advice is don't let the past cloud the present... they will never be $300 again, and you don't want to look back on today and regret not picking it up back 'when it was only $460'. Another great review!

Mate, I've had a similar experience with the 6R15s. I know it's a respected movement. Mine ran at +5 out od the box but within a few weeks went down to -5. Comparatively, I have 3 other watches with 4R35 movements that operate at +1,+2 and +5 secs per day. I prefer watches to run fast and not slow, and I'm satisfied with anything running within +10.

I picked up my SARB035 about a week before the discontinued leak came out. This is one of my favorite watches. The finishing is better than most watches under $1000. I had to get a clasp extension to get it to fit on my large wrists, and it added 4 micro adjustments, thankfully it was cheaper than an extra link. I think these are the best affordable alternatives to the Aqua Terra or the Explorer I.

I think Orient Star (Black SAF02002B0 or White SAF02004W0) gives you a better value for price at this point. It's nearly half of the price (250-300 dollars), same looks, with power reserve. It's just too much at this point, this also goes for Alpinist. I'd prefer buying the Orient Star more.

I couldn’t agree more! I looked and looked and couldn’t find a model anything like the SARB033 or really any that were 38mm. I paid $500CDN for my SARB033 with the bracelet still in plastic and with a ColaReb strap. Yes I overpaid (but to be fair the prices in Canada haven’t ever been in the $300 range new when you include taxes shipping and import duties) but in my opinion the watch doesn’t under deliver. It has all of the same features (aside from AR which I am happy to live without the micro-scratches that come with an outer coating) as similar priced entry level Swiss pieces, and while I’ll admit the ETA 2824 is a somewhat nicer/more interesting looking mov’t, my SARB’s 6R15 outperforms the 2824 (-2s/d vs -6s/d) inside the Mido Baroncelli a friend of mine gave to me. So I can at least say that in my experience, the 6R15 at least performs comparably to an ETA 2824. So with that said, what else does a ~$500 entry level Swiss piece have that the SARB033 doesn’t? I’ll tell you one thing though: Here in Canada, some of the prices on eBay.ca have climbed as high as $1,200 and beyond. Would I pay that much for a SARB033? No. Would I sell mine, and turn a $700 profit if you offered me $1200 tomorrow? Not a chance. I can make more money. This watch is discontinued. None more will be made. But I own one, and that is pretty cool 😎

I got a used one for $350AUD. Didn't run to specs, so a retired watchmaker dismantled the movement and overhauled it for $100. Said it was very dry inside, not well oiled which isn't uncommon with mass produced spring movements. Now it runs almost as well as my quartz.

I was fortunate enough to buy both when they were around $300, but not sure I would buy one at almost $500. I do have small wrists, so these watches fit me perfectly. They are solidly built and in time will probably continue to increase in price. So, even if you buy one now, you'll likely be able to get your money out of it if you want to sell it later. As you noticed, it is a strap monster. The black strap and cream dial are an elegant combination.

Picked up one on eBay in the U.K. for around £200 after watching J. Anthony's rave review. A week later his broke and found some Chinese components in it, just as my new purchase arrived. At first I was disappointed as I thought it was too small and I'm more used to 40-42 same size wrist as yourself. Having said that I love it and even took it on holiday as an evening watch. Caught a guy wearing a Navitimer oggling it, he might have thought it was a GS too.
I would swap it for a SARX, especially the one with blue hands and a bit bigger at 40mm from memory. Keep thinking about flipping it but something holds me back (the inflated price perhaps?). I was going to put it on a Colareb tan suede but after the fashion show I think I prefer the bracelet. Still hovering over the Cadisen diamond and might put the suede on that. Great review.

  • @AnalogKid82

The 33 arrived today. Overall, the hype about this being a simple, classic, well-crafted, beautiful watch is true and the 38mm is a great size, even on my 7in wrist. In video and photos, the stock bracelet also looks well-crafted, of solid metal, and arguably decent design, but after actually holding it, the metal is very light and almost feels cheap- I can understand why so many just want the watch and are quick to swap out the bracelet. And it’s clear why the reviewer called it an “after-thought.” Just my opinion. I paid $457US, with Prime, new from Amazon - the range is now 450-950. If the price drops in the next few weeks I’ll try to get one for cheaper and return this one. Or maybe I’ll be happy I got it for under 500 and just keep it.

Discontinuing of SARB033/035 looks as marketing strategy to separate in price 4R and 6R movements, making 6R series more luxurious choice above 500 $. Therefore hard to expect new replacement to appear from Seiko in the same price range with the same level of finishing. I agree what Orient Star may give an alternative for below 500 $ level (also can be within Seiko strategy).

I also used to own the SARB017 but sold it because I acquired the rare SARB013. I even ended up selling the SARB013 to put my money elsewhere. Recently I was able to snag a SARB070 on the second hand market with the gold colored bezel polished back to stainless steel and am excited for it to come in. The SARB070 has gold indices as opposed to the silver indices on the SARB035. These watches are great but sometimes get washed out by other watches that are more "fun." This SARB035 and the SARB033 are definitely more conservative pieces. I think I'll fall in love with the SARB line again.

Just ordered the sarb035, think the cream will go better as a dressier and still sporty everyday watch, what was I wanted to go for. I payed an inflated price for it, but I think it will prove worthy of it in the future. Comparing this model to newer Seiko models really makes no sense, that would be the same as comparing a newer car model to an older but more classic model. You should expect the newer model to perform better but that does not mean that it equals the older model in aesthetics or overall design so that argument is a bit off in my opinion.

MSRP for the 033 and 035 was ¥45,000 (in the ballpark of $425 US at current rates). I managed to pick up a nearly unused model for a fair bit less because the previous owner lost a friction pin in the bracelet and apparently never bothered to take it to a jeweler. ¥1,000 later and it was good as new.

I am currently wearing a Seiko SNXS73 which has a silver sunburst dial, they do a blue dial and a dark gray/black . I see this as a great alternative for the current price of a sarb you could get every SNXS dial colour option. A few great quality straps would fit within the funds needed although the 19mm lugs can limit this, you can push some 20mm straps on but makes removal harder. The stock bracelet has a retro charm about it but it’s an acquired taste, most would want to throw it back in the box and never look at it again

Another side note. It has been said that the discontinuation of the SARB line is to save the 6R15 for higher priced models. Which means paying $1,000 for the same movement as the SARB, only in a different case. And sure that case may have really great finishing, but so did the SARB. It will have sapphire crystal, so did the SARB. You can see where I’m going with this. I’m not trying to say that the higher priced models with the 6R15 aren’t worth it, not at all. But maybe the SARB033/5 was just a gem of a piece, that punches above its weight class because, well it had movement that was quite simply above its weight class. And Seiko can’t have people going “why would I pay $1k for a watch with the same movement as one that costs $350? So they had to kill the SARB. But guess what? People are still paying these inflated prices for a watch that yes cost only $350 not long ago (in US, in Canada it was always closer to $450) but it has the heart of a $1k watch, and that is what made it great in the first place. The killer movement and awesome finishing, great durability and versatility. I think it is easily worth $500, or dare I say it $600. CDN of course. And if anyone can show me another Seiko model that is 38mm (hell, 36mm preferably, but let’s be realistic), has the same specs and movement, quality of finishing, lume, equal amount of versatility for under $500 or even under $600? Well, all I have found so far is the SARB033. But I would love to hear of any others that fit the bill!

@@JustOneMoreWatch Yeah... Seiko is trying to market the 6R15 as a direct competitor to the ETA 2824 and I honestly don't think it cuts the mustard. At $300-$500 they were undercutting entry level Swiss watches and offering great value. At $500-$1000 I feel like the 6R15 is outdone by the 2824. I own a SARB033 and I love it, and I love the 6R15 movement. But I paid $318 for mine. I know it's not equivalent to a 2824 running in watches at twice the price.

I will disagree with you. If you don't want to take the microbrand route because you fear that your watch will be worth nothing on the second hand market in a decade (which is likely and has put a cap on the prices I have paid on micro brand watches), Seiko is a sure bet.
Also, you might have noticed but Seiko has started a very noticeable strategic repositioning and all the new models coming out are way way more expensive, a watch with a 6R15 movement is going to cost between $800-$1,000 (that is RRP) so my bet is that the SARBs are going to increase in value a bit more once the market has dried out. But that is a speculative gut feeling.
The SARX, SARW lines offer more of less the same quality of watch but with a better bracelet and a transparent coating making the watch and bracelet more scratch resistant. But is that worth an extra $500 in terms of RRP? There are also some limited edition SARW/SARX priced at $1,500 on eBay if that means anything.
Lastly, it seems that Seiko has solved the 6R15 issues with revision D, at least that is what people are saying but Seiko is keeping silent about it.

Someone mistook it for a Grand Seiko? Not surprising; my problem with Seiko dress watches is that they all look very similar, from the $100 quartz to the Grand Seikos. Some stick hands, some dauphin, usually stick markers, slight variations in size, slight variations in dial finish.
From 5 feet away you can't tell what it is.
I have one of these and I'm keeping it, but it's not the most exciting watch I own.

  • @mrdisco99

Just like the Alpinist, if you cross your fingers and toes and look at just the right time, Amazon (USA) will offer these new with Seiko warranty for $318.75, sold by Amazon.com (Alpinist sells for $356.75). More likely to see these in the mornings, every couple weeks or so. They seem to sell maybe 20-50 of these at a time and then go back to the 3rd party sellers with their more market driven prices. I got my SARB033 this way and it's my favorite watch.
At that price, these are amazing value. I still can't believe these used to be sold that cheaply on the regular. That said, I probably wouldn't buy one for more than $400 today.

Now the most of the Presage line watches came with a downgraded movement at a higher price 😩 I have the 33 & the 35 and I have no issues at all, both are running with +3 to +6 sec. 😍 Because of the bracelet: is this the original Sarb033 one or may be from the 35? Don't buy the SARB033 or 035 - you're not missing out.
I bought a SARB033 in Japan this year around March when the final retail stocks were selling out. I sold it in September with no regrets at all. What did I buy to replace it? I used the money from the sale to help me purchase a SARX055. So why wouldn't I recommend a SARB? Well, the finish is OK but nothing fancy. As shown, the bracelet is cheap and easily scratchable. I was attracted to the watch because of the movement but the 6R15 is nothing special: mine ran -10 seconds a day out of the box and gained 10 to 20 seconds a day when I was active, with active being walking 5 kms a day. The 6R15C is also noted to have performance issues. Once you realise the 6R15 movement is technically quite ordinary, it puts the whole thing into a better perspective. Also, don't believe for a moment that because they are JDM and "Made in Japan" that they are actually made in Japan - JD Anthony has shown they use Chinese parts and for the price they were charging, I would bet money they were made in Malaysia with final inspection by a Japanese QC technician. It's all Seiko in-house manufacture but still...
But really, the thing is that Seiko releases watches constantly that you're going to find something from their ever changing range you will like. If you "missed out" on the SARB035 - consider a new SARY103, technically a little lower but aesthetically I think it blows the SARBs away.

    • @JonJonFtheW
      @JonJonFtheW 5 лет назад +7

Earthen Jadis Unfortunately, the SARXs and SARYs are no replacement for the 033/035 because they are much larger. If Seiko makes a new 033 with the same finishing as a SARX it'll be a massive hit, but until then we settle for the 033.

    • @earthenjadis8199

@@JonJonFtheW I anticipated this kind of response - "My wrist is thin so I can't wear anything over a 39mm". That's not true in most cases. Nobody is staring at you and your wrist from 30 cms away for an extended period of time and judging if it looks clownish or not. As a general rule, if the lugs do not overhang your wrist width, the watch is fine on you. So for someone with a 6.5 inch wrist, anything up to 41mm in diameter and 48mm lug tip to lug tip is fine. I'd even push that to 42mm as something you should at least consider if you're getting something sporty. If the lugs curve, that is a bonus. Unless you have very slim 6 inch or under wrists, you can wear a lot more watches than you are likely limiting yourself to.

    • @destiny2k6
      @destiny2k6 5 лет назад +5

The problem is if you want 38mm, there's nothing in Seiko's new offering's that will give you that size. For smaller wrists, 40mm really is too big for a dress watch.
